Bingo game using specified board and method of playing

Abstract

A bingo-like game and method of playing. One variation is playable by one or more players and provides players with a chance to obtain prizes by responding to queries that correspond to the squares of a bingo board or other matrix of selections, with the player who answers the question completing a row, column, or optionally a diagonal, winning the game. This variation is playable as a television, board, or automated game (e.g., via computer or hand-held device). A second variation is playable using, for example, a slot machine, and includes random selection of results, such as via one or more slot reels, and upon a winning alignment occurring in the reels, proceeding to a second portion of the game, such as a display, in which one of a matrix of selections is selected, with the player winning upon completing a row, column, or optionally a diagonal.

Description

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

[0003] The present invention relates to the field of games, and in particular to an interactive player game involving “Bingo-like” play and amenable to play on television or a machine, including a slot machine.

[0005] It is known in the art to provide entertaining games, such as “Jeopardy” and “Wheel of Fortune”, each of which are produced by Merv Griffin Enterprises of Beverly Hills, Calif., for the entertainment industry. Other home games, such as Monopoly® and Clue, which are manufactured by Hasbro, Inc., of Pawtucket, R.I., and others, have had a wide berth of popularity. Many of these games have been in the market place for many years and have lost some of their earlier attraction.

[0006] There is constantly a need for new attractions in the games market, for television, as well as home and casino use.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

[0007] It is an advantage of the present invention to meet this need, as well as others, by providing a fresh approach to one of the world's most popular games: Bingo. In one embodiment of the game of the present invention, a master of ceremonies (MC) or other person or method presents a panel of players with questions. The questions are answered, prizes are awarded, and ultimately, a winner is determined based on who completes a “Bingo” (or other word, phrase, or set of symbols) line on a predetermined Bingo-type board.

[0008] It is a further advantage of one embodiment of the present invention to provide a predetermined board having cube or other appropriately shaped turnable messages that include a beginning side or view, a side or view that offers a prize, and a side or view that fills in a “Bingo” row when the set of questions are answered correctly.

[0009] It is yet another advantage of an embodiment of the present invention provide a “Bingo” ball drop machine to drop one ball at a time to determine which square on the board will be played for next. It is another advantage of one embodiment of the present invention to provide balls marked with special numbers, markers, or illustrations to correspond with predetermined squares on the special “Bingo” board. It is another advantage of one embodiment of the present invention to provide that the turnable messages are marked with random amounts of cash or other prizes.

[0010] It is yet another advantage of an embodiment of the present invention that players are able to accumulate prizes and cash by answering questions for each square that is picked at random by a “Bingo” ball drop machine, thus filling in the board of the game.

[0011] It is another advantage of an embodiment of the present invention that the player that answers the most questions and is awarded the most cash and prizes may not necessary end up winning the game. In an embodiment of the present invention, the winner is the player who answers the last question to fill in a “Bingo” row, column, or diagonal.

The game, referred to in one embodiment as “American Bingo,” is playable as a live television game or other form of commercial entertainment, as a home game, or as a video, computer-based, slot machine, or other automated game.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION

[0024] One embodiment of the present invention includes a bingo game that provides participating players with a chance to obtain cash and/or other prizes by responding to queries (e.g., answering questions) that correspond to the squares of a bingo board or other matrix of selections, with the player who answers the question that completes a bingo row, column, or diagonal winning the game.

[0025] In accordance with one exemplary embodiment of the present invention, play is conducted using a standard bingo ball drop machine, and a matrix of selections, such as a Bingo board having cross-sectional locations (also interchangeably referred to herein as “squares”) that denote different prizes. For example, in one embodiment, the board has a square cross-sectional shape, that includes 25 separate sections, five down and five across with the word Bingo across the top to correspond to the columns, and the numbers one (1) through five (5) down the sides to correspond to the rows. A “free” or otherwise universally player usable square is optionally marked in the center of the board. Other variations can be used as deemed appropriate.

[0026] In one embodiment, the game includes specially marked balls that designate specific squares on the board or other matrix. Each participating player is seated facing the matrix, as described further below. The host (e.g., person that asks the questions; also interchangeably referred to herein as the master of ceremonies or MC) can be standing at a podium on either side of the special game board opposite the players. Another helper may be located at the ball drop machine so as to display the ball that drops and designates which square (selection) the players play for.

For example, the game is playable in an electronic or partially electronic manner using a terminal, such as a personal computer, microcomputer, minicomputer, mainframe computer, or other device having a processor and display, such as an electronic hand-held game device, for which representative images of a board and individual squares, questions and answers, and credit for correct answers are displayed on a screen via a graphical user interface (GUI). The game is also playable in conjunction with performance of selected functions on a network, such as the Internet or an intranet or using, for example, a slot machine or other device, including use with other variations of play amenable to the type of machine and preferences or limitations for that machine.

[0028] In one embodiment, prior to play of the game, matrix (board) is set up with random prizes, such as cash values, trips, cars, or other prizes, which are associated with the individual squares of the board or other selections relating to the matrix. In one embodiment, each selection in the matrix begins with a blank display (e.g., the board includes turnable cube-shaped information “squares” (or other shapes), each having a blank side or a side with symbols on it that is initially displayed to the players). When the corresponding ball drops identifying a particular selection, a prize is revealed (e.g., the square is turned to a prize display). The panel of players then await a competitive attempt to answer the query (e.g., each player holds a buzzing device and prepares to answer questions either given in live play by an MC or on a card or other video device).

Each ball corresponds to one cross-sectional location (“square”) on the bingo board or other matrix, such as B1, N2. After the location has been called out or designated, the square corresponding to the ball dropped is turned to reveal the prize won for that square.

If the question remains unanswered or is only answered incorrectly, the ball goes back into the hopper and the game continues without the square being assigned to any player.

Claims

1. A method for a plurality of players to play a bingo-type game using a matrix containing a plurality of selections, the matrix having rows and columns, the method comprising: playing a round of the bingo-type game, playing the round including: selecting one from the plurality of selections; providing a query associated with the selected one from the plurality of selections; receiving a response to the query from a responding one from the plurality of players; determining whether the response to the query is correct; if the response to the query is correct, assigning the selected one from the plurality of selections to the responding one from the plurality of players; and if the selected one from the plurality of selections forms a complete row or column, determining that the responding one from the plurality of players wins the game; and if the responding one from the plurality of players does not win the game, playing additional rounds until one from the plurality of players wins the game.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the matrix includes a central selection, and wherein the central selection is a universal selection.

3. The method of claim 2, wherein the central selection is labeled FREE.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the matrix includes at least one diagonal, and wherein playing the round includes: if the selected one from the plurality of selections forms a complete diagonal, determining that the responding one from the plurality of players wins the game.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein selecting one from the plurality of selections includes: selecting a ball from a plurality of balls, each of the plurality of balls identifying one of the plurality of selections.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the selections are provided via turnable signs.

7. The method of claim 6, wherein the turnable signs are cube shaped.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein the query is provided by a host.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein the responding one from the plurality of players is a first one of the plurality of players responding.

10. The method of claim 9, wherein the first one of the plurality of players responding is the first player to press a buzzer.

11. The method of claim 1, wherein playing a round of the bingo-type game further includes: if the response to the query is incorrect, receiving a response from a second one of the plurality of players; determining whether the response of the second one of the plurality of players is correct; if the response of the second one of the plurality of players is correct, assigning the selected one of the plurality of selections to the second one of the plurality of players; and if the selected one of the plurality of selections forms a complete row or column, determining that the second one of the plurality of players wins the game.

12. The method of claim 5, further comprising: returning the ball to the plurality of balls.

13. The method of claim 1, wherein playing a round of the bingo-type game further includes: identifying a prize associated with the selected one from the plurality of selections; and if the response to the query is correct, assigning the prize to the responding one from the plurality of players.

14. A method for a plurality of players to play a bingo-type game using a board having turnable tiles arranged in rows and columns, the method comprising: playing a round of the bingo-type game, playing the round including: randomly selecting one of the turnable tiles; turning the selected tile to determine a prize associated with the turned tile; asking a question associated with the turned tile; receiving an answer to the question from a first responding player; determining whether the answer is correct; if the answer is correct, assigning the tile to the responding player; and if the selected one from the plurality of selections forms a complete row or column, determining that the responding one from the plurality of players wins the game; and if the responding one from the plurality of players does not win the game, playing additional rounds until one from the plurality of players wins the game.

15. A system for a plurality of players to play a bingo-type game using a matrix containing a plurality of selections, the matrix having rows and columns, the system comprising: means for playing a round of the bingo-type game, the means for playing the round including: means for selecting one from the plurality of selections; means for providing a query associated with the selected one from the plurality of selections; means for receiving a response to the query from a responding one from the plurality of players; means for determining whether the response to the query is correct; if the response to the query is correct, means for assigning the selected one from the plurality of selections to the responding one from the plurality of players; and if the selected one from the plurality of selections forms a complete row or column, means for determining that the responding one from the plurality of players wins the game; and if the responding one from the plurality of players does not win the game, means for playing additional rounds until one from the plurality of players wins the game.

16. A device for at least one player to play a bingo-type game using a matrix containing a plurality of selections, the matrix having rows and columns, the device comprising: a display for displaying game elements, including the representations of the matrix; and a processor for receiving selections from the at least one player for play of the game, for determining progress of play, and for processing and displaying a graphical user interface; wherein a round of the bingo-type game is played, play of the round including: selecting one from the plurality of selections; providing a query associated with the selected one from the plurality of selections; receiving a response to the query from a responding one of the at least one player; determining whether the response to the query is correct; if the response to the query is correct, assigning the selected one from the plurality of selections to the responding one of the at least one player; and if the selected one from the plurality of selections forms a complete row or column, determining that the responding one of the at least one player wins the game; and wherein, if the responding one of the at least one player does not win the game, additional rounds are played until one of the at least one player wins the game.

17. The device of claim 16, wherein the device comprises a terminal.

18. The device of claim 17, wherein the terminal comprises one selected from a group consisting of a personal computer, a minicomputer, a microcomputer, a main frame computer, and a slot machine.

19. The device of claim 16, wherein the display is coupled to a display processor, the display and display processor comprising a display terminal.

20. The device of claim 19, wherein the display terminal is coupled to the processor via a network.

21. The device of claim 20, wherein the network is the Internet.

22. A method for a player to play a bingo-type game using a matrix containing a plurality of selections, the matrix having rows and columns, the method comprising: playing a first round portion of the bingo-type game, playing the first round portion including: at least one random device producing a random result; and if the produced random result is a preselected result, proceeding to a second round portion of the bingo-type game; if play proceeds to the second round portion of the bingo-type game, playing the second portion, playing the second round portion including: selecting one from the plurality of selections of the matrix; and if the selected one from the plurality of selections forms a complete row or column, determining that the player wins the game.

23. The method of claim 22, wherein, if the produced random result is a preselected result, awarding the player a first round portion prize.

24. The method of claim 22, wherein, if the player wins the game, a bonus prize is awarded to the player.

25. The method of claim 22, wherein the preselected result includes a bingo selection on at least one reel slot.

26. A device for a plurality of players to play a bingo-type game using a matrix containing a plurality of selections, the matrix having rows and columns, the device comprising: a display for displaying game elements, including the representations of the matrix; and a processor for receiving selections from the player for play of the game, for determining progress of play, and for processing and displaying a graphical user interface; wherein a first round portion of the bingo-type game is played, play of the first round portion including: at least one random device producing a random result; and if the produced random result is a preselected result, proceeding to a second round portion of the bingo-type game; wherein, if play proceeds to the second round portion of the bingo-type game, the second portion is played, play of the second round portion including: selecting one from the plurality of selections of the matrix; and wherein, if the selected one from the plurality of selections forms a complete row or column, the player is determined to win the game.

27. The device of claim 23, wherein the device is a slot machine.
