Claims
- 1. A head mounted display system comprising:
- a frame to be worn on a user's head;
- a liquid crystal display mounted on said frame for displaying video information;
- a concave partial reflector supported by said frame and shaped to project an enlarged virtual image of said displayed video information at a distance from said user; and
- an optical element supported on said frame so as to be disposed between a user's eye and said partially concave reflector and having an optical center line that is at a convergence angle with respect to an axis of the user's eye when looking straight ahead to direct the user's eye inward towards the location of the virtual image.
- 2. A head mounted display system as recited in claim 1 wherein said convergence angle is approximately 2.degree. to 4.degree..
- 3. A head mounted display system as recited in claim 1 wherein said reflector is spherical in shape.
- 4. A head mounted display system as recited in claim 1 wherein said reflector is parabolic in shape.
- 5. A head mounted display system as recited in claim 1 wherein said reflector is shaped to project said enlarged virtual image at a distance from said user that is less than infinity.
- 6. A head mounted display system as recited in claim 1 wherein said optical element directs light at locations along the width of the optical element towards a central area of said reflector.
- 7. A head mounted display system as recited in claim 1 wherein said optical element is a prism.
- 8. A head mounted display system as recited in claim 1 wherein said optical element compensates for variations in the interpupillary distance of different users.
- 9. A head mounted display system comprising:
- a frame to be worn on a user's head;
- a right handed liquid crystal display having a front surface and a back surface, said right handed liquid display mounted in a reverse right to left orientation on said frame to form a left handed display with said back surface forming an image surface viewable by a user;
- a backlight mounted on said frame adjacent said front surface of said right handed liquid crystal display; and
- an odd number of reflectors for reflecting information depicted on said display to a user's eye.
- 10. A head mounted display system as recited in claim 9 wherein at least one of said reflectors is partially transparent.
- 11. A head mounted display system as recited in claim 9 wherein at least one of said reflectors is concave to project an enlarged virtual image of the information depicted on said display.
- 12. A head mounted display system as recited in claim 9 wherein at least one of said reflectors is at a convergence angle with respect to an axis of the user's eye when looking straight ahead to direct the user's eye inward towards the location of the virtual image.
