Claims
- 1. A process for preparing a phenolic resin which consisting essentially of reacting a phenol represented by the formula (I): ##STR4## where Y and Z are selected from the group consisting of a hydrogen atom, a halogen atom, an alkyl group, an alkoxy group, an aryl group, an allyl group, a phenylalkyl group, and a --COOR group where R represents a hydrogen atom or a lower alkyl group, or Z in conjunction with the adjacent meta position forms a condensed benzene ring, with soybean peroxidase in the presence of a peroxide to form a resin of oxidatively coupled phenol having a number average molecular weight of at least 500.
- 2. The process of claim 1 wherein said reaction is carried out in a medium containing water and an organic solvent, and said peroxide is gradually added thereto.
- 3. The process of claim 2 wherein said resin has a number average molecular weight up to approximately 30,000.
- 4. The process of claim 3 wherein said soybean peroxidase enzyme is reacted in an amount of about 500 to 500,000 units per 100 grams phenol.
- 5. The process of claim 4 wherein said resin is a dimer or trimer.
- 6. The process of claim 4 wherein said resin has a number average molecular weight of approximately 1000 to 15,000.
- 7. The process of claim 4 wherein said resin has a number average molecular weight of approximately 500 to 5000.
- 8. The process of claim 4 wherein said phenol is reacted in a concentration of 1 to 100 g per 100 ml.
- 9. The process of claim 4 wherein said peroxide is hydrogen peroxide.
- 10. The process of claim 9 wherein said phenol is selected from the group consisting of phenol, 4-t-butylphenol, 4-n-butylphenol, 4-ethylphenol, cresol, p-phenylphenol p-octylphenol, p-nonylphenol, p-hydroxybenzoic acid, 4-hydroxynaphthoic acid, p,p-bipheno, 4-aminosalicylic acid, salicylic acid, methyl salicylate, ethyl salicylate, 4,4'-isopropylidenediphenol, and ethyl 4-hydroxybenzoate.
- 11. The process of claim 10, wherein said organic solvent is miscible with water.
- 12. The process of claim 10, wherein said organic solvent is immiscible with water.
- 13. The process of claim 9 wherein said soybean peroxidase enzyme is an extract pre-treated to remove lipophilic impurities therefrom.
- 14. The process of claim 1 wherein said soybean peroxidase is reacted as soybean hulls.
- 15. The process of claim 14 wherein said hulls are crushed and washed with toluene.
- 16. The process of claim 1 wherein said resin is represented by the formula (II): ##STR5## where n is greater than 2 and Y and Z are defined as in formula (I).
