Claims
- 1. A compound having the general structural formula ##STR20## wherein R is a straight or branched chain alkyl radical containing 5 to 20 carbon atoms; R.sub.1 is selected from the group consisting of alkyl containing 1 to 20 carbon atoms and alkenyl containing 2 to 6 carbon atoms; R.sub.2 is hydrogen or alkyl containing 1 to 10 carbon atoms; and R.sub.5 is divalent alkylene containing 2 to 6 carbon atoms.
- 2. The compound of claim 1 wherein X is Br, R is n--C.sub.7 H.sub.15 --, R.sub.1 is --n--C.sub.7 H.sub.15 --, R.sub.2 is H, R.sub.3 is H, R.sub.4 is H, and R.sub.5 is --CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 --.
- 3. The compound of claim 1 wherein X is Br, R is --C.sub.7 H.sub.15 --, R.sub.1 is --n--C.sub.6 H.sub.13, R.sub.2 is H, R.sub.3 is H, R.sub.4 is H, and R.sub.5 is --CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 --.
- 4. The compound of claim 1 wherein X is Br, R is n--C.sub.7 H.sub.15 --, R.sub.1 is --n--C.sub.5 H.sub.11, R.sub.2 is H, R.sub.3 is H, R.sub.4 is H, and R.sub.5 is --CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 --.
- 5. The compound of claim 1 wherein X is Br, R is n--C.sub.7 H.sub.15 --, R.sub.1 is --n--C.sub.4 H.sub.9, R.sub.2 is H, R.sub.3 is H, R.sub.4 is H, and R.sub.5 is --CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 --.
- 6. The compound of claim 1 wherein X is Br, R is n--C.sub.7 H.sub.15 --, R.sub.1 is --n--C.sub.3 H.sub.7, R.sub.2 is H, R.sub.3 is H, R.sub.4 is H, and R.sub.5 is --CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 --.
- 7. The compound of claim 1 wherein X is Br, R is n--C.sub.7 H.sub.15 --, R.sub.1 is --C.sub.2 H.sub.5, R.sub.2 is H, R.sub.3 is H, R.sub.4 is H, and R.sub.5 is --CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 --.
- 8. The compound of claim 1 wherein X is Br, R is n--C.sub.7 H.sub.15 --, R.sub.1 is --CH.sub.3, R.sub.2 is H, R.sub.3 is H, R.sub.4 is H, and R.sub.5 is --CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 --.
- 9. The compound of claim 1 wherein X is Br, R is n--C.sub.7 H.sub.15 --, ##STR21## R.sub.2 is H, R.sub.3 is H, R.sub.4 is H, and R.sub.5 is --CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 --.
- 10. The compound of claim 1 wherein X is Br, R is n--C.sub.7 H.sub.15 --, R.sub.1 is --n--C.sub.8 H.sub.17, R.sub.2 is H, R.sub.3 is H, R.sub.4 is H, and R.sub.5 is --CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 --.
- 11. The compound of claim 1 wherein X is Br, R is n--C.sub.7 H.sub.15 --, R.sub.1 is --n--C.sub.9 H.sub.19, R.sub.2 is H, R.sub.3 is H, R.sub.4 is H, and R.sub.5 is --CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 --.
- 12. The compound of claim 1 wherein X is Br, R is n--C.sub.7 H.sub.15 --, R.sub.1 is --n--C.sub.10 H.sub.21, R.sub.2 is H, R.sub.3 is H, R.sub.4 is H, and R.sub.5 is --CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 --.
- 13. The compound of claim 1 wherein X is Br, R is n--C.sub.7 H.sub.15 --, R.sub.1 is --n--C.sub.12 H.sub.25, R.sub.2 is H, R.sub.3 is H, R.sub.4 is H, and R.sub.5 is --CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 --.
- 14. The compound of claim 1 wherein X is Br, R is n--C.sub.7 H.sub.15 --, R.sub.1 is --n--C.sub.16 H.sub.33, R.sub.2 is H, R.sub.3 is H, R.sub.4 is H, and R.sub.5 is --CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 --.
- 15. The compound of claim 1 wherein X is Br, R is n--C.sub.6 H.sub.13 --, R.sub.1 is --n--C.sub.6 H.sub.13, R.sub.2 is H, R.sub.3 is H, R.sub.4 is H, and R.sub.5 is --CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 --.
- 16. The compound of claim 1 wherein X is Br, R is n--C.sub.8 H.sub.17 --, R.sub.1 is --n--C.sub.8 H.sub.17 --, R.sub.2 is H, R.sub.3 is H, R.sub.4 is H, and R.sub.5 is --CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 --.
- 17. The compound of claim 1 wherein X is Br, R is n--C.sub.7 H.sub.15 --, R.sub.1 is --CH.sub.2 CH.dbd.CH.sub.2, R.sub.2 is H, R.sub.3 is H, R.sub.4 is H, and R.sub.5 is --CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 --.
- 18. The compound of claim 2 wherein X is Br, R is n--C.sub.7 H.sub.15 --, R.sub.1 is --CH.sub.3, R.sub.2 is --CH.sub.3, R.sub.3 is H, R.sub.4 is H, and R.sub.5 is --CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 --.
- 19. The compound of claim 1 wherein X is Br, R is n--C.sub.7 H.sub.15 --, R.sub.1 is --n--C.sub.3 H.sub.7, R.sub.2 is --n--C.sub.3 H.sub.7, R.sub.3 is H, R.sub.4 is H, and R.sub.5 is --CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 --.
- 20. The compound of claim 1 wherein X is Br, R is n--C.sub.7 H.sub.15 --, R.sub.1 is --n--C.sub.5 H.sub.11, R.sub.2 is --n--C.sub.5 H.sub.11, R.sub.3 is H, R.sub.4 is H, and R.sub.5 is --CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 --.
- 21. A compound having the general structural formula ##STR22## wherein X is halogen; R is a straight or branched chain alkyl radical containing 5 to 20 carbon atoms; R.sub.1 is benzyl, halosubstituted benzyl or .alpha.-methyl benzyl; R.sub.2 is hydrogen or alkyl containing 1 to 10 carbon atoms; R.sub.3 and R.sub.4 are independently hydrogen or alkyl containing 1 to 4 carbon atoms; and R.sub.5 is divalent alkylene containing 2 to 6 carbon atoms.
- 22. The compound of claim 21 wherein X is Br, R is n--C.sub.5 H.sub.11 --, ##STR23## R.sub.2 is H, R.sub.3 is H, R.sub.4 is H, and R.sub.5 is --CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 --.
- 23. The compound of claim 21 wherein X is Br, R is n--C.sub.7 H.sub.15 --, ##STR24## R.sub.2 is H, R.sub.3 is H, R.sub.4 is H, and R.sub.5 is --CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 --.
- 24. The compound of claim 21 wherein X is Br, R is n--C.sub.8 H.sub.17 --, ##STR25## R.sub.2 is H, R.sub.3 is H, R.sub.4 is H, and R.sub.5 is --CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 --.

- 29. The compound of claim 21 wherein X is Br, R is n--C.sub.7 H.sub.15 --, ##STR30## R.sub.2 is H, R.sub.3 is H, R.sub.4 is H, and R.sub.5 is --CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 --.
- 30. A method of controlling a microorganism selected from bacteria and fungi which comprises applying to the locus where such control is desired an effective amount of a compound having the general structural formula ##STR31## wherein R is a straight or branched chain alkyl radical containing 5 to 20 carbon atoms; R.sub.1 is selected from the group consisting of alkyl containing 1 to 20 carbon atoms and alkenyl containing 2 to 6 carbon atoms; R.sub.2 is hydrogen or alkyl containing 1 to 10 carbon atoms; and R.sub.5 is divalent alkylene containing 2 to 6 carbon atoms.
- 31. The method of claim 30 wherein X is Br, R is n--C.sub.7 H.sub.15 --, R.sub.1 is --n--C.sub.7 H.sub.15, R.sub.2 is H, R.sub.3 is H, R.sub.4 is H, and R.sub.5 is --CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 --.
- 32. The method of claim 30 wherein X is Br, R is n--C.sub.7 H.sub.15 --, R.sub.1 is --n--C.sub.6 H.sub.13, R.sub.2 is H, R.sub.3 is H, R.sub.4 is H, and R.sub.5 is --CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 --.
- 33. The method of claim 30 wherein X is Br, R is n--C.sub.7 H.sub.15 --, R.sub.1 is --n--C.sub.5 H.sub.11, R.sub.2 is H, R.sub.3 is H, and R.sub.4 is H, and R.sub.5 is --CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 --.
- 34. The method of claim 30 wherein X is Br, R is n--C.sub.7 H.sub.15 --, R.sub.1 is --n--C.sub.4 H.sub.9, R.sub.2 is H, R.sub.3 is H, R.sub.4 is H, and R.sub.5 is --CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 --.
- 35. The method of claim 30 wherein X is Br, R is n--C.sub.7 H.sub.15 --, R.sub.1 is --n--C.sub.3 H.sub.7, R.sub.2 is H, R.sub.3 is H, R.sub.4 is H, and R.sub.5 is --CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 --.
- 36. The method of claim 30 wherein X is Br, R is n--C.sub.7 H.sub.15 --, R.sub.1 is --C.sub.2 H.sub.5, R.sub.2 is H, R.sub.3 is H, R.sub.4 is H, and R.sub.5 is --CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 --.
- 37. The method of claim 30 wherein X is Br, R is n--C.sub.7 H.sub.15 --, R.sub.1 is --CH.sub.3, R.sub.2 is H, R.sub.3 is H, R.sub.4 is H, and R.sub.5 is --CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 --.
- 38. The method of claim 30 wherein X is Br, R is n--C.sub.7 H.sub.15 --, ##STR32## R.sub.2 is H, R.sub.3 is H, R.sub.4 is H, and R.sub.5 is --CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 --.
- 39. The method of claim 30 wherein X is Br, R is n--C.sub.7 H.sub.15 --, R.sub.1 is --n--C.sub.8 H.sub.17, R.sub.2 is H, R.sub.3 is H, R.sub.4 is H, and R.sub.5 is --CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 --.
- 40. The method of claim 30 wherein X is Br, R is n--C.sub.7 H.sub.15 --, R.sub.1 is --n--C.sub.9 H.sub.19, R.sub.2 is H, R.sub.3 is H, R.sub.4 is H and R.sub.5 is --CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 --.
- 41. The method of claim 30 wherein X is Br, R is n--C.sub.7 H.sub.15 --, R.sub.1 is --n--C.sub.10 H.sub.21, R.sub.2 is H, R.sub.3 is H, R.sub.4 is H, and R.sub.5 is --CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 --.
- 42. The method of claim 30 wherein X is Br, R is n--C.sub.7 H.sub.15 --, R.sub.1 is --n--C.sub.12 H.sub.25, R.sub.2 is H, R.sub.3 is H, R.sub.4 is H, and R.sub.5 is --CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 --.
- 43. The method of claim 30 wherein X is Br, R is n--C.sub.7 H.sub.15 --, R.sub.1 is --n--C.sub.16 H.sub.33, R.sub.2 is H, R.sub.3 is H, R.sub.4 is H, and R.sub.5 is --CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 --.
- 44. The method of claim 30 wherein X is Br, R is n--C.sub.6 H.sub.13 --, R.sub.1 is --n--C.sub.6 H.sub.13, R.sub.2 is H, R.sub.3 is H, R.sub.4 is H, and R.sub.5 is --CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 --.
- 45. The method of claim 30 wherein X is Br, R is n--C.sub.8 H.sub.17 -- R.sub.1 is --n--C.sub.8 H.sub.17, R.sub.2 is H, R.sub.3 is H, R.sub.4 is H, and R.sub.5 is --CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 --.
- 46. The method of claim 30 wherein X is Br, R is n--C.sub.7 H.sub.15 -- R.sub.1 is --CH.sub.2 CH.dbd.CH.sub.2, R.sub.2 is H, R.sub.3 is H, R.sub.4 is H, and R.sub.5 is --CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 --.

A method of claim 30 having the general structural formula ##STR33## wherein X is halogen; R is a straight or branched chain alkyl radical containing 5 to 20 carbon atoms; R.sub.1 is benzyl, halo-substituted benzyl or .alpha.-methyl benzyl; R.sub.2 is hydrogen or alkyl containing 1 to 10 carbon atoms; R.sub.3 and R.sub.4 are independently hydrogen or alkyl containing 1 to 4 carbon atoms; and R.sub.5 is divalent alkylene containing 2 to 6 carbon atoms.
- 51. The method of claim 50 wherein X is Br, R is n--C.sub.5 H.sub.11, ##STR34## R.sub.2 is H, R.sub.3 is H, R.sub.4 is H, and R.sub.5 is --CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 --.
- 52. The method of claim 50 wherein X is Br, R is n--C.sub.7 H.sub.15, ##STR35## R.sub.2 is H, R.sub.3 is H, R.sub.4 is H, and R.sub.5 is --CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 --.

An antimicrobial composition comprising a compound having the general structural formula ##STR42## wherein R is a straight or branched chain alkyl radical containing 5 to 20 carbon atoms; R.sub.1 is selected from the group consisting of alkyl containing 1 to 20 carbon atoms and alkenyl containing 2 to 6 carbon atoms; R.sub.2 is hydrogen or alkyl containing 1 to 10 carbon atoms; and R.sub.5 is divalent alkylene containing 2 to 6 carbon atoms and an inert carrier therefore.
- 60. An antimicrobial composition comprising a compound having the general structural formula ##STR43## wherein X is halogen; R is a straight or branched chain alkyl radical containing 5 to 20 carbon atoms; R.sub.1 is benzyl, halo-substituted benzyl or .alpha.-methyl benzyl; R.sub.2 is hydrogen or alkyl containing 1 to 10 carbon atoms; R.sub.3 and R.sub.4 are independently hydrogen or alkyl containing 1 to 4 carbon atoms; and R.sub.5 is divalent alkylene containing 2 to 6 carbon atoms and an inert carrier therefore.
