Claims
- 1. A hydrophilic, biocompatible hydrated polyurea-urethane polymer gel derived from prepolymer units having an isocyanate concentration of no more than 0.46 meq/gm and at least 75% of which are oxyethylene-based diols or polyols having an average molecular weight of about 7000 to about 30,000, said diols or polyols having essentially all of the hydroxyl groups capped with polyisocyanate, said hydrated polymer gel characterized by transparency and by a surface which resists nonspecific protein adsorption and formed by reacting said prepolymer units with water; said polyisocyanate being an aliphatic or cycloaliphatic isocyanate.
- 2. The hydrated polymer gel of claim 1 in which at least 90% of said prepolymer units are polyisocyanate-capped oxyethylene-based diols or polyols.
- 3. The hydrated polymer gel of claim 1 in which at least 95% of said prepolymer units are polyisocyanate-capped oxyethylene-based diols or polyols.
- 4. The hydrated polymer gel of claim 1 in which substantially all of said prepolymer units are polyisocyanate-capped oxyethylene-based diols or polyols.
- 5. The hydrated polymer gel of claim 1 in which all of said prepolymer units are polyisocyanate-capped oxyethylene-based diols or polyols.
- 6. The hydrated polymer gel of claim 1 in which the molecular weight of said diols or polyols prior to capping with polyisocyanate is at least 10,000.
- 7. The hydrated polymer gel of claim 1 in which the molecular weight of said diols or polyols prior to capping with polyisocyanate is from about 10,000 to about 20,000.
- 8. The hydrated polymer gel of claim 1 in which at least 90% of said prepolymer units are polyisocyanate-capped oxyethylene-based diols or polyols having molecular weights of at least 10,000 prior to capping with polyisocyanate.
- 9. The hydrated polymer gel of claim 1 in which at least 95% of said prepolymer units are polyisocyanate-capped oxyethylene-based diols or polyols having molecular weights of at least 10,000 prior to capping with polyisocyanate.
- 10. The hydrated polymer gel of claim 1 in which 100% of said prepolymer units are polyisocyanate-capped oxyethylene-based diols or polyols having molecular weights of at least 10,000 prior to capping with polyisocyanate.
- 11. The hydrated polymer gel of claim 1 in which said polyisocyanate is isophorone diisocyanate.
- 12. The hydrated polymer gel of claim 1 in which the diols or polyols are capped with polyisocyanate in such a manner that the isocyanate-to-hydroxyl group ratio is between about 1.8 and about 2.2.
- 13. The hydrated polymer gel of claim 1 in which the isocyanate concentration in the prepolymer units is about 0.1 to about 0.43 milliequivalents per gram.
- 14. The hydrated polymer gel of claim 1 which further comprises an antioxidation agent.
- 15. A crosslinked hydrophilic, biocompatible hydrated polymer gel prepared by reacting together water and a prepolymer in a prepolymer-to-water ratio of about 1:1 to about 1:20, said prepolymer prepared by:
- (a) selecting diols or polyols, at least 75% of which are oxyethylene-based diols or polyols having an average molecular weight of about 7000 to about 30,000, and
- (b) reacting said diols or polyols with an aliphatic or cycloaliphatic polyisocyanate at an isocyanate-to-hydroxyl ratio of about 1.8 to about 2.2 so that essentially all of the hydroxyl groups of said diols or polyols are capped with polyisocyanate and the resulting prepolymer has an isocyanate concentration of no more than 0.46 milliequivalents per gram.
- 16. The hydrated polymer gel of claim 15 in which at least 90% of the diols or polyols selected in step (a) are oxyethylene-based.
- 17. The hydrated polymer gel of claim 16 in which the molecular weight of said diols or polyols is at least 10,000.
- 18. The hydrated polymer gel of claim 17 in which said diols or polyols of step (a) are dissolved in an organic solvent selected from acetonitrile, dimethyl formamide, dimethyl sulfoxide, tetrahydrofuran, dioxane, dichloromethane, acetone and methyl ethyl ketone or mixtures thereof.
- 19. The hydrated polymer gel of claim 15 in which at least 95% of the diols or polyols selected in step (a) are oxyethylene-based.
- 20. The hydrated polymer gel of claim 19 in which said prepolymer is dissolved in an organic solvent selected from acetonitrile, dimethyl formamide, dimethyl sulfoxide, tetrahydrofuran, dioxane, acetone, methyl ethyl ketone, methanol, ethanol, 2-propanol, dichloromethane, or mixtures thereof, prior to reacting with water.
- 21. The hydrated polymer gel of claim 20 which is in the form of a coating, and is prepared by depositing the prepolymer-organic solvent solution on a coatable substrate, removing excess organic solvent and then reacting the prepolymer with water to promote crosslinking on the substrate surface.
- 22. The hydrated polymer gel of claim 15 which further comprises an antioxidation agent.
- 23. The hydrated polymer gel of claim 15 in which said ratio is between about 1:5 to about 1:15.
- 24. The hydrated polymer gel of claim 15 which is in the form of a coating on a coatable substrate.
- 25. The hydrated polymer gel of claim 24 which is formed by mixing together water and said prepolymer, coating the resulting solution onto a coatable substrate prior to gelation of said solution, and removing excess water by evaporation.
- 26. The hydrated polymer gel of claim 15 which is a monomolecular or substantially monomolecular layer on a coatable substrate.
- 27. A prepolymer for preparing a hydrophilic, biocompatible polymer gel characterized by transparency and by resistance to nonspecific protein adsorption, said prepolymer consisting of oxyethylene-based diols or polyols having an average molecular weight of about 7000 to about 30,000, said diols or polyols having essentially all of the hydroxyl groups capped with an aliphatic or cycloaliphatic polyisocyanate, and said prepolymer having an isocyanate concentration of no more than 0.46 meq/gm and having the ability to gel water upon polymerization in prepolymer-to-water ratios of about 1:1 to about 1:20.
- 28. The prepolymer of claim 27 in which the molecular weight of said diols or polyols is at least 10,000 prior to capping with polyisocyanate.
- 29. The prepolymer of claim 27 in which said polyols are trihydroxy compounds.
- 30. The prepolymer of claim 27 in which the isocyanate concentration is from about 0.1 to about 0.43 milliequivalents per gram.
- 31. The prepolymer of claim 27 which further comprises an antioxidation agent.
