Claims
- 1. A soluble device for insertion into the buccal cavity for administering an active ingredient, comprising:
- a water-soluble muco-adherent lyophilized foam and an active ingredient, said device having a density of about 0.001 to about 0.15 gm/cc and a dissolution time of at least about 8 hours.
- 2. The device of claim 1 wherein said foam is comprised of at least one water-soluble polymer.
- 3. The device of claim 2 wherein said polymer is selected from the group consisting of gelatin, hydroxypropylmethylcellulose, sodium carboxylmethylcellulose, methylcellulose, hydroxyethylcellulose, hydroxypropylcellulose, hydroxyethylmethylcellulose, hydroxyethylethylcellulose, hydroxypropylethylcellulose, polyvinyl alcohols, and mixtures thereof.
- 4. The device of claim 1 wherein said foam comprises hydroxypropylmethylcellulose.
- 5. The device of claim 1 wherein said foam comprises hydroxypropylmethylcellulose and sodium carboxylmethylcellulose.
- 6. The device of claim 1 wherein said active ingredient comprises a hormone.
- 7. The device of claim 1 wherein said active ingredient comprises a polypeptide.
- 8. The device of claim 1 wherein said active ingredient comprises histrelin.
- 9. The device of claim 1 wherein said active ingredient comprises estradiol.
- 10. The device of claim 1 wherein said active ingredient is present at from about 0.005% to about 95% by weight of the device.
- 11. The device of claim 1 wherein said active ingredient is present at from about 0.1% to about 80% by weight of the device.
- 12. The device of claim 1 having a density of about 0.001 to about 0.08 gm/cc.
- 13. The device of claim 1 having a density of about 0.01 to about 0.08 gm/cc.
- 14. The device of claim 1 having a dissolution time of at least about 20 hours.
- 15. The device of claim 1 wherein said device comprises a substantially homogeneous mixture of foam and active ingredient.
- 16. A soluble device for insertion into the vagina for administering an active ingredient, comprising:
- a water-soluble, muco-adherent lyophilized foam and an active ingredient, said device having a density of about 0.06 to about 0.30 gm/cc and a dissolution time of at least about 8 hours.
- 17. The device of claim 16 wherein said foam is comprised of at least one water-soluble polymer.
- 18. The device of claim 17 wherein said polymer is selected from the group consisting of gelatin, hydroxypropylmethylcellulose, sodium carboxylmethylcellulose, methylcellulose, hydroxyethylcellulose, hydroxypropylcellulose, hydroxyethylmethylcellulose, hydroxyethylethylcellulose, hydroxypropylethylcellulose, polyvinyl alcohols, and mixtures thereof.
- 19. The device of claim 16 wherein said foam comprises hydroxypropylmethylcellulose.
- 20. The device of claim 16 wherein said active ingredient comprises miconazole nitrate.
- 21. The device of claim 16 wherein said active ingredient comprises terconazole.
- 22. The device of claim 16 having a density of about 0.07 to about 0.20 gm/cc.
- 23. The device of claim 16 having a density of about 0.10 to about 0.16 gm/cc.
