Claims
- 1. A repellent composition comprising an effective repellent amount of Z,E-nepetalactone to repel a target pest from a target area, the Z,E-nepetalactone in combination with a carrier.
- 2. The composition of claim 1 wherein the Z,E-nepetalactone is a first individual isomer of a plant volatile isolated from a catnip plant, further wherein a second individual isomer is E,Z-nepetalactone.
- 3. A repellent composition comprising an effective repellent amount of E,Z-nepetalactone to repel a target pest from a target area, the E,Z-nepetalactone in combination with a carrier.
- 4. The composition of claim 1 wherein the carrier is a liquid, solid or gas.
- 5. The composition of claim 1 wherein the target pest is an arthropod selected from the group consisting of cockroaches, mosquitoes, black flies, house flies, gnats, stored grain pests, moths, ticks, mites and spiders.
- 6. The composition of claim 5 wherein the target area is a human or animal.
- 7. The composition of claim 5 wherein the target area is out-of-doors or indoors.
- 8. A repellent composition comprising an effective repellent amount of a sesquiterpenoid to repel a target pest from a target area, the sesquiterpenoid in combination with a carrier.
- 9. The composition of claim 8 wherein the sesquiterpenoid is a plant volatile isolated from an Osage orange.
- 10. A repellent composition comprising an effective repellent amount of a sesquiterpenoid to repel a target pest from the target area, the sesquiterpenoid in combination with a carrier and selected from the group consisting of elemol, β-selinene, δ-selinene, patchoulene, 1-hexanol, β-E-caryophyllene, β-cubebene, β-elemene, α-elemene, hedycaryol, β-eudesmol, α-gurjunene, δ-gurjunene, α-copaene, δ-cadinene, Δ-cadinene, calarene, trans-caryophyllene, EPI-bicyclosesquiphellandrene, globulol and any combination thereof.
- 11. The composition of claim 10 further including one or more of alpha-cubebene, farnesol, β-farnesene, 1,8-cineole, myrtenol, pomiferin, osajin, hexyl hexanoate, 2-hexanone, 2-furancarboxaldehyde, 1,4-dimethyl benzene, 6-methyl-5-hepten-2-one, benzene acetaldehyde, 4-methyl phenol, 2,6-nonadienal, 1-decanol, 1-dodecanol, E-2-decenal, tetradecanal, hexyl acetate, butyl butanoate, butyl hexanoate, 3-methyl butyl hexanoate, (1α, 3α, 5α)1,5-diethynl-3-methyl-2-methylene cyclohexane, n-octyl acetate, cyclododecane and 1,2,3,4,4a,5,6,8a-octahydro-naphthalene.
- 12. The composition of claim 10 wherein the carrier is a liquid, solid or gas.
- 13. The composition of claim 10 wherein the target pest is an arthropod selected from the group consisting of cockroaches, mosquitoes, black flies, house flies, gnats, stored grain pests, moths, ticks, mites and spiders.
- 14. The composition of claim 10 wherein the target area is a human or animal.
- 15. The composition of claim 10 wherein the target area is out-of-doors or indoors.
- 16. A method for repelling a target pest from a target area, comprising applying an effective repelling amount of a repellent composition in or around the target area, the composition comprising E,Z-nepetalactone, Z-E-nepetalactone or a sesquiterpenoid and a carrier, the sesquiterpenoid selected from the group consisting of elemol, β-selinene, δ-selinene, patchoulene, 1-hexanol, β-E-caryophyllene, β-cubebene, β-elemene, α-elemene, hedycaryol, β-eudesmol, α-gurjunene, δ-gurjunene, α-copaene, δ-cadinene, Δ-cadinene, calarene, trans-caryophyllene, EPI-bicyclosesquiphellandrene, globulol and any combination thereof.
- 17. The method of claim 16 further including one or more of alpha-cubebene, farnesol, β-farnesene, 1,8-cineole, myrtenol, pomiferin, osajin, hexyl hexanoate, 2-hexanone, 2-furancarboxaldehyde, 1,4-dimethyl benzene, 6-methyl-5-hepten-2-one, benzene acetaldehyde, 4-methyl phenol, 2,6-nonadienal, 1-decanol, 1-dodecanol, E-2-decenal, tetradecanal, hexyl acetate, butyl butanoate, butyl hexanoate, 3-methyl butyl hexanoate, (1α, 3α, 5α)1,5-diethynl-3-methyl-2-methylene cyclohexane, n-octyl acetate, cyclododecane and 1,2,3,4,4a,5,6,8a-octahydro-naphthalene.
- 18. The method of claim 16 wherein the target area is a human or animal.
- 19. The method of claim 16 wherein the target area is out-of-doors or indoors.
- 20. The method of claim 16 wherein the repellent composition is applied to the target area using a delivery means selected from the group consisting of fumigation, contact and aquatic exposure.
- 21. A kit useful for repelling a target pest from a target area comprising packaging material comprising an effective repellent amount of E,Z-nepetalactone or Z,E-nepetalactone and instructions on how to use the E,Z-nepetalactone or Z,E-nepetalactone to repel target pests.
- 22. A kit useful for repelling a target pest from a target area comprising packaging material comprising an effective repellent amount of a combination of two or more sesquiterpenoids or a single sesquiterpenoid, the single sesquiterpenoid not including alpha-cubebene, farnesol, 1,8-cineole or beta-farnesene, and instructions on how to use the combination of two or more sesquiterpenoids or single sesquiterpenoid to repel target pests.
- 23. The composition of claim 2 wherein the plant volatile is isolated from the catnip plant with steam distillation prior to being separated into first and second individual isomers.
- 24. The composition of claim 23 wherein the first and second individual isomers are separated using thin layer chromatography.
- 25. The composition of claim 24 wherein the Z,E-nepetalactone has a purity of at least about 91%.
- 26. The composition of claim 1 wherein the Z,E-nepetalactone is an individual isomer of a plant volatile selected from the group consisting of Nepeta mussini, Nepeta grandiflora, Nepeta nuda and a combination thereof.
- 27. The composition of claim 4 wherein the carrier is selected from the group consisting of oils, polymers, plastics, waxes, wood, gels, colloids, granular materials, dusts, powders, sprays, drenching means, emulsifiable concentrates, and any combination thereof.
- 28. The composition of claim 6 wherein the target area is clothing.
- 29. The composition of claim 6 wherein the animal is a pet or livestock.
- 30. The composition of claim 7 wherein the target area is selected from the group consisting of a garden, yard, plant, camping area, tent, bed net, sleeping bag, body of water, park, field, barn, garage, commercial building, private building, home, cupboard, shipping container, packing material, and bedding.
- 31. The composition of claim 24 wherein the E,Z-nepetalactone has a purity of at least about 97.5%.
- 32. The composition of claim 3 wherein the E,Z-nepetalactone is an individual isomer isolated from a biorational source selected from the group consisting of Nepeta mussini, Nepeta grandiflora, Nepeta nuda and a combination thereof.
- 33. The composition of claim 3 wherein the carrier is a liquid, solid or gas.
- 34. The composition of claim 33 wherein the carrier is selected from the group consisting of oils, polymers, plastics, waxes, wood, gels, colloids, granular materials, dusts, powders, sprays, drenching means, emulsifiable concentrates, and any combination thereof.
- 35. The composition of claim 3 wherein the target pest is an arthropod selected from the group consisting of cockroaches, mosquitoes, black flies, house flies, gnats, stored grain pests, moths, ticks, mites and spiders.
- 36. The composition of claim 35 wherein the target area is a human or animal.
- 37. The composition of claim 36 wherein the target area is clothing.
- 38. The composition of claim 35 wherein the animal is a pet or livestock.
- 39. The composition of claim 35 wherein the target area is out-of-doors or indoors.
- 40. The composition of claim 39 wherein the target area is selected from the group consisting of a garden, yard, plant, camping area, tent, bed net, sleeping bag, body of water, park, field, barn, garage, commercial building, private building, home, cupboard, shipping container, packing material, and bedding.
- 41. The composition of claim 10 wherein the sesquiterpenoid is an individual component of an essential oil extracted from a ripe or unripe Osage orange.
- 42. The composition of claim 41 wherein the essential oil is extracted from the Osage orange with a method selected from the group consisting of steam distillation, solid-phase micro-extraction, solvent extraction with hexane, Soxhlet extraction with hexane and Soxhlet extraction with methylene chloride, further wherein the individual component is identifiable using mass spectrometry and gas chromatography.
- 43. The composition of claim 42 wherein elemol is the sesquiterpenoid used in the repellent composition, further wherein the elemol is extracted from the unripe Osage orange with steam distillation.
- 44. The composition of claim 10 wherein the sesquiterpenoid is an individual component of an essential oil extracted from a biorational source selected from the group consisting of Peruvian basil, Bothriochloa pertusa, mangoe, navel orange, Cleome monophylla, Leptospermum scoparium Kunzea ericoides and any combination thereof.
- 45. A repellent composition comprising an effective repellent amount of at least two sesquiterpenoids to repel a target pest from the target area, the at least two sesquiterpenoids in combination with a carrier.
- 46. The composition of claim 45 wherein the at least two sesquiterpenoids are individual components of an essential oil extracted from a ripe or unripe Osage orange.
- 47. The composition of claim 46 further comprising one or more non-sesquiterpenoids extracted from the Osage orange.
- 48. The composition of claim 47 wherein the one or more non-sesquiterpenoid is hexyl hexanoate, further wherein the hexyl hexanoate can be combined with elemol, farnesol, myrtenol and trans-caryophyllene.
- 49. The composition of claim 47 wherein the one or more non-sesquiterpenoid is hexyl hexanoate, further wherein the hexyl hexanoate can be combined with elemol, farnesol, farnesene, trans-caryophyllene and myrtenol.
- 50. The composition of claim 46 wherein the essential oil is extracted from the Osage orange with a method selected from the group consisting of steam distillation, solid-phase micro-extraction, solvent extraction with hexane, Soxhlet extraction with hexane and Soxhlet extraction with methylene chloride, further wherein the individual components are identifiable using mass spectrometry and gas chromatography.
- 51. The composition of claim 45 wherein the carrier is a liquid, solid or gas.
- 52. The composition of claim 51 wherein the carrier is selected from the group consisting of oils, polymers, plastics, waxes, wood, gels, colloids, granular materials, dusts, powders, sprays, drenching means, emulsifiable concentrates and any combination thereof.
- 53. The composition of claim 45 wherein the target pest is an arthropod selected from the group consisting of cockroaches, mosquitoes, black flies, house flies, gnats, stored grain pests, moths, ticks, mites and spiders.
- 54. The composition of claim 53 wherein the target area is a human or animal.
- 55. The composition of claim 54 wherein the target area is clothing.
- 56. The composition of claim 54 wherein the animal is a pet or livestock.

The composition of claim 57 wherein the target area is selected from the group consisting of a garden, yard, plant, camping area, tent, bed net, sleeping bag, body of water, park, field, barn, garage, commercial building, private building, home, cupboard, shipping container, packing material and bedding.

The composition of claim 45 wherein the at least two sesquiterpenoids are individual components of an essential oil extracted from a biorational source selected from the group consisting of Peruvian basil, Bothriochloa pertusa, mangoe, navel orange, Cleome monophylla, Leptospermum scoparium, Kunzea ericoides and any combination thereof.
- 60. The method of claim 20 wherein the delivery means is selected from the group consisting of a sprayer, chemigation, controlled release point source dispenser, cream, liquid, powder and any combination thereof.
- 61. A kit useful for repelling a target pest from a target area comprising packaging material comprising an effective repellent amount of at least two sesquiterpenoids and instructions on how to use the at least two sesquiterpenoids to repel target pests.
