Claims
- 1. A membrane comprising an association complex of a carboxypolysaccharide (CPS) and a polyether (PE), which possesses at least one property selected from the group consisting of bioresorbability, bioadhesiveness, antithrombogenicity, and antiadhesiveness, and wherein the membrane has a pH of below about 3.0 and is hydratable by at least about 100%.
- 2. The membrane of claim 1, wherein the CPS is selected from the group consisting of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), carboxyethyl cellulose, chitin, hyaluronic acid, alginate, carboxymethyl chitosan, pectin, carboxymethyl dextran, heparin, heparin sulfate, and chondroitin sulfate.
- 3. The membrane of claim 1, wherein the molecular weight of the CPS is between 100 kd and 10,000 kd.
- 4. The membrane of claim 1, wherein the molecular weight of the CMC is between 600 kd and 5000 kd.
- 5. The membrane of claim 4, wherein the molecular weight of the CMC is approximately 700 kd.
- 6. The membrane of claim 1, wherein the PE is polyethylene oxide (PEO), and the molecular weight of the PEO is between 5 kd and 8000 kd.
- 7. The membrane of claim 6, wherein the molecular weight of the PEO is between 100 kd and 5000 kd.
- 8. The membrane of claim 6, wherein the molecular weight of the PEO is approximately 5000 kd.
- 9. The membrane of claim 1, wherein the proportion of the CPS is from 10% to 95% by weight, and the amount of the PE is from 5% to 90% by weight.
- 10. The membrane of claim 1, wherein the degree of substitution of the CPS is from greater than about 0 up to and including about 3.
- 11. The membrane of claim 1, wherein the degree of substitution of the CPS is between about 0.3 and about 2.
- 12. The membrane of claim 1, wherein the degree of substitution of the CPS is between about 0.5 and about 1.7.
- 13. The membrane of claim 1, wherein the degree of substitution of the CPS is between 0.65 and about 1.5.
- 14. The membrane of claim 1 which is bioadhesive, and wherein the bioadhesiveness of the membrane is adjusted by selecting at least one member from the group consisting of: (1) the molecular weight of the CPS in the range of about 100 kd and about 10,000 kd, (2) the molecular weight of PE in the range of about 5 kd and about 8000 kd, (3) the degree of substitution of the CPS in the range of greater than about 0 and up to and including about 3, (4) the proportion of the CPS and the PE, wherein the proportion of the CPS is from about 10% to about 95% by weight, and the proportion of the PE is in the range of about 5% to about 90% by weight and (5) the membrane pH below about 3.
- 15. The membrane of claim 14, wherein the membrane pH is between about 1 and about 3.
- 16. The membrane of claim 14, wherein the membrane pH is between about 2 and about 3.
- 17. The membrane of claim 1 which is resorbable, and wherein the resorbability of the membrane is adjusted by selecting at least one member from the group consisting of: (1) the molecular weight of the CPS in the range of about 100 kd and about 10,000 kd, (2) the molecular weight of PE in the range of about 5 kd and about 8000 kd, (3) the degree of substitution of the CPS in the range of greater than about 0 and up to and including about 3, (4) the proportion of the CPS and the PE, wherein the proportion of the CPS is from about 10% to about 95% by weight, and the proportion of the PE is in the range of about 5% to about 90% by weight and (5) the membrane pH below about 3.
- 18. The membrane of claim 17, wherein the membrane pH is between about 1 and about 3.
- 19. The membrane of claim 17, wherein the membrane pH is between about 2 and about 3.
- 20. The membrane of claim 1, which is flexible, and wherein the flexability of the membrane is adjusted by selecting at least one member from the group consisting of: (1) the molecular weight of the CPS in the range of about 100 kd and about 10,000 kd, (2) the molecular weight of PE in the range of about 5 kd and about 8000 kd, (3) the degree of substitution of the CPS in the range of greater than about 0 and up to and including about 3, (4) the proportion of the CPS and the PE, wherein the proportion of the CPS is from about 10% to about 95% by weight, and the proportion of the PE is in the range of about 5% to about 90% by weight and (5) the membrane pH below about 3.
- 21. The membrane of claim 20, wherein the membrane pH is between about 1 and about 3.
- 22. The membrane of claim 20, wherein the membrane pH is between about 2 and about 3.
- 23. The membrane of claim 1, further comprising multiple layers of membranes of CPS and PE.
- 24. The membrane of claim 1 further comprising a drug.
- 25. The membranes of claim 24, wherein said drug is selected from the group consisting of antibiotics, anti-inflammatory agents, hormones, chemotactic factors, analgesics, and anesthetics.
