Claims
- 1. A bipolar push rod assembly for use in a bipolar endoscopic surgical instrument having a hollow tub for receiving said push rod assembly, a pair of end effectors rotatably mounted at a distal end of the hollow tube, and an actuator coupled to a proximal end of the hollow tube for moving said push rod assembly through the tube to effect a rotation of the end effectors, said bipolar push rod assembly comprising:
- a) a pair of conductive rods, each having a proximal end and a distal end;
- b) a non-conductive sheath through which said conductive rods extend;
- c) a proximal non-conductive collar covering a portion of said conductive rods adjacent to said proximal ends of said conductive rods; and
- d) a reciprocating distal insulator slidable within a portion of the hollow tube and fixedly coupled to said distal ends of said conductive rods, said distal insulator having means for accessing said distal ends of said conductive rods for coupling said distal ends to the end effectors of the bipolar endoscopic surgical instrument.
- 2. A bipolar push rod assembly according to claim 1, wherein:
- said non-conductive sheath covers substantially all of said conductive rods between said proximal non-conductive collar and said distal insulator.
- 3. A bipolar push rod assembly according to claim 1, wherein:
- said proximal non-conductive collar includes means for electrically coupling said proximal ends of said conductive rods to a source of cautery current.
- 4. A bipolar push rod assembly according to claim 1, wherein:
- said distal ends of said conductive rods are swaged approximately 90.degree..
- 5. A bipolar push rod assembly according to claim 4, wherein:
- said means for accessing said distal ends includes a pair of slots in said distal insulator.
- 6. A bipolar push rod assembly according to claim 1, wherein:
- said distal insulator is a single ceramic member.
- 7. A bipolar push rod assembly according to claim 1, wherein:
- said distal insulator comprises two ceramic members.
- 8. A bipolar push rod assembly according to claim 7, wherein:
- said two ceramic members are substantially identical.
- 9. A bipolar push rod assembly according to claim 1, further comprising:
- e) a sealing gasket having two lumens,
- each of said conductive rods extending through a respective lumen of said sealing gasket,
- said sealing gasket being located between said proximal collar and said distal insulator for sealing an annular space between said push rod assembly and the tube of the bipolar endoscopic surgical instrument.
- 10. A bipolar push rod according to claim 9, wherein:
- said non-conductive sheath comprises a first proximal part and a second distal part and said sealing gasket is located between said first proximal part and said second distal part.
- 11. A bipolar push rod assembly according to claim 1, wherein:
- said proximal non-conductive collar maintains said proximal ends of said conductive rods in a spaced apart position and includes means for coupling to the actuator of the bipolar endoscopic surgical instrument.
- 12. A bipolar push rod assembly according to claim 11, wherein:
- said means for coupling to the actuator comprises a groove in said collar.
- 13. A bipolar push rod assembly according to claim 1, wherein:
- said distal insulator maintains said distal ends of said conductive rods in a spaced apart position.
- 14. A bipolar endoscopic surgical instrument comprising:
- a) a hollow tube having a proximal end and a distal end;
- b) a bipolar push rod assembly having a proximal end and a distal end, said push rod assembly extending through said hollow tube;
- c) a pair of end effectors rotatably mounted at said distal end of said hollow tube and coupled to said distal end of said push rod assembly through a pair of link members; and
- d) an actuator coupled to said proximal end of said hollow tube and to said proximal end of said push rod assembly for moving said push rod assembly through said hollow tube to effect a rotation of said effectors, wherein said bipolar push rod assembly includes,
- i) a pair of conductive rods, each having a proximal end and a distal end,
- ii) a non-conductive sheath through which said conductive rods extend,
- iii) a proximal non-conductive collar covering a portion of said conductive rods adjacent to said proximal ends of said conductive rods, and
- iv) a distal insulator coupled to said distal ends of said conductive rods, said distal insulator including a pair of distal slots, at least a portion of each slot being defined by opposing wall portions for housing at least a portion of said link members.
- 15. A bipolar endoscopic surgical instrument according to claim 14, wherein:
- said non-conductive sheath covers substantially all of said conductive rods between said proximal non-conductive collar and said distal insulator.
- 16. A bipolar endoscopic surgical instrument according to claim 14, wherein:
- said proximal non-conductive collar includes means for electrically coupling said proximal ends of said conductive rods to a source of cautery current.
- 17. A bipolar endoscopic surgical instrument according to claim 14, wherein:
- said distal ends of said conductive rods are swaged approximately 90.degree..
- 18. A bipolar endoscopic surgical instrument according to claim 14, wherein:
- said distal insulator is a single ceramic member.
- 19. A bipolar endoscopic surgical instrument according to claim 14, wherein:
- said distal insulator comprises two ceramic members.
- 20. A bipolar endoscopic surgical instrument according to claim 19, wherein:
- said two ceramic members are substantially identical.
- 21. A bipolar endoscopic surgical instrument according to claim 14, wherein:
- said push rod assembly further includes,
- v) a sealing gasket having two lumen,
- each of said conductive rods extending through a respective lumen of said sealing gasket,
- said sealing gasket being located between said proximal collar and said distal insulator for sealing an annular space between said push rod assembly and said tube.
- 22. A bipolar endoscopic surgical instrument according to claim 21, wherein:
- said non-conductive sheath comprises a first proximal part and a second distal part and said sealing gasket is located between said first proximal part and said second distal part.
- 23. A bipolar endoscopic instrument according to claim 14, wherein:
- said hollow tube terminates in a clevis at said distal end of said hollow tube,
- said clevis has a round mounting hole and a D-shaped mounting hole,
- said end effectors are mounted in said clevis by a screw and nut,
- said nut having a D-shaped flange and a flat side, said flat side engaging said D-shaped mounting hole so that said nut is prevented from rotating.
- 24. A bipolar endoscopic surgical instrument according to claim 14, wherein:
- said distal insulator maintains said distal ends of said conductive rods in a spaced apart position and includes means for accessing said distal ends of said conductive rods through which said distal ends of said conductive rods are coupled to said end effectors.
- 25. A bipolar endoscopic surgical instrument according to claim 14, wherein:
- said proximal non-conductive collar maintains said proximal ends of said conductive rods in a spaced apart position and includes means for coupling to said actuator.
- 26. A bipolar endoscopic surgical instrument according to claim 25, wherein:
- said means for coupling to said actuator comprises a groove in said collar.
