Claims
- 1. A compound of the formula
- (C--N=N--A--B--A'--N=.sub.n (N--C').sub.2-n
- where:
- a. n is 1 or 2;
- b. C and C' are different unless --A--B--A'-- is unsymmetrical and are selected from ##EQU1## c. A and A' are the same or different, at least one being ##EQU2## and the other being selected from ##EQU3## and ##EQU4## d. B is selected from --XR.sub.5 X--, --XR.sub.5 XC(=X)X--[R.sub.5 ], --XR.sub.5 XC(=X)--[R.sub.5 ], --XR.sub.5 C(=X)NH--[R.sub.5 ], --XR.sub.5 NHC(=X)--[R.sub.5 ], --XR.sub.5 NHC(=X)X--[R.sub.5 ], --X--[R.sub.5 ], and ##EQU5## e. X is sulfur or oxygen; f. Y is selected from lower alkyl of 1-4 carbons, --CN, --C(=O)OR.sub.1 and --C(=O)NH.sub.2 ;
- g. Z is selected from --CN, --Cl, --Br, --N.sub.3, --XCN, --R.sub.1, --XC(=O)OR.sub.1, --OR, --SC(=O)R.sub.1, --OOR.sub.4, --SR.sub.1, --OC(=O)R, --SC(=S)OR.sub.1, --OOC(=O)R.sub.1, and --OOH,
- h. R is selected from hydrogen, alkyl of 1-6 carbons araryl of 6-14 carbons;
- i. R.sub.1 and R'.sub.1 are the same or different and are selected from alkyl of 1-8 carbons, cycloalkyl of 3-10 carbons, aralkyl of 7-12 carbons and aryl of 6-14 carbons;
- j. R.sub.2 and R'.sub.2 are the same or different and are alkyl of 1-10 carbons or cycloalkyl of 3-10 carbons;
- k. R.sub.1 and R.sub.2, R'.sub.2 and R.sub.5, and R'.sub.1 and R'.sub.z when taken together with the tertiary carbon linked to the azo group, form cycloalkyl of 4-12 carbons;
- l. R.sub.4 is tertiary-alkyl of 4-8 carbons; and
- m. R.sub.5 is a diradical selected from the group consisting of aliphatic of 1-12 carbons, aromatic-aliphatic of 7-20 carbons and aromatic of 6-12 carbons.
- 2. A compound of the formula
- (C--N=N--A--B--A'--N=.sub.n (N--C').sub.2-n
- where:
- a. n is 1 or 2;
- b. C and C' are different unless --A--B--A'-- is unsymmetrical and are selected from ##STR66## and aryl of 6-14 carbons; c. A and A' are the same or different, at least one being ##STR67## and the other being selected from ##STR68## and ##STR69## d. B is selected from --XR.sub.5 X--, --XR.sub.5 XC(=X)X--[R.sub.5 ], --XR.sub.5 XC(=X)-[R.sub.5 ], --XR.sub.5 C(=X)NH--[R.sub.5 ], --XR.sub.5 NHC(=X)--[R.sub.5 ], --XR.sub.5 NHC(=X)X--[R.sub.5 ], --X--[R.sub.5 ]and ##STR70## e. X is sulfur or oxygen; f. Y is selected from lower alkyl of 1-4 carbons, --CN, --C(=O)OR.sub.1 and --C(=O)NH.sub.2 ;
- g. Z is selected from --CN, --Cl, --Br, --N.sub.3, --XCN, --R.sub.1, --XC(=O)OR.sub.1, --OR, --SC(=O)R.sub.1, --OOR.sub.4, --SR.sub.1, --OC(=O)R, --SC(=S) OR.sub.1, --OOC(=O)R.sub.1, and --OOH,
- h. R is selected from hydrogen, alkyl of 1-6 carbons and aryl of 6-14 carbons;
- i. R.sub.1 and R'.sub.1 are the same or different and are selected from alkyl of 1-8 carbons, cycloalkyl of 3-10 carbons, aralkyl of 7-12 carbons and aryl of 6-14carbons;
- j. R.sub.2 and R'.sub.2 are the same or different and are alkyl of 1-10 carbons or cycloalkyl of 3-10 carbons;
- k. R.sub.1 and R.sub.2, R'.sub.2 and R.sub.5, and R'.sub.1 and R'.sub.2, when taken together with the tertiary carbon linked to the azo group, form cycloalkyl of 4-12 carbons;
- l. R.sub.4 is tertiary-alkyl of 4-8 carbons; and
- m. R.sub.5 is a diradical selected from the group consisting of (i) aliphatic of 1-12 carbons, (ii) aromatic-aliphatic of 7-20 carbons, which diradicals (i) and (ii) are terminated by carbon atoms and can contain in its backbone structure a linking groups selected from the class consisting of --C(=O)O, --OC(=O)O----C(=O)NH--, --OC(=O)NH--, --O--, --S--, --C(=O)S--, --C(=S)S--, and --C(=S)O--, and (iii) aromatic of 6--12 carbons.
- 3. A compound as in claim 1 wherein the optional linking group in R.sub.5 is selected fron --C(=O)O-- and --OC(=O)O--.
- 4. Claim 3 wherein said compound is 4-t-butylazo-4-methyl-3-thiapentyl 4-t-butylazo-4-cyanovalerate.
- 5. Claim 3 wherein said compound is 4-t-butylazo-4,6-dimethyl-3-thiaheptyl 4-t-butylazo-4-cyanovalerate.
- 6. Claim 3 wherein said compound is di(4-t-butylazo-4,6-dimethyl-3-thiaheptyl) 4,4'-azobis-(4-methyl-3-thiapentyl)dicarbonate.
- 7. Claim 3 wherein said compound is di(4-t-butylazo-4-methyl-3-thiapentyl) 4,4'-azobis-(4-cyanovalerate).
- 8. Claim 3 wherein said compound is 2,2'-azobis(5-(4-t-butylazo-4-cyanovaleroxyloxy)-2-methyl-3-thiapentane).
