Claims
- 1. A method of initiating and/or accelerating coalescence in a cationic bitumen emulsion comprising the steps of:
- providing a first cationic bitumen emulsion having a soap solution having a primary emulsifier and at least a second cationic bitumen emulsion,
- combining the second cationic bitumen emulsion with a first cationic bitumen emulsion in an emulsifying apparatus to create a final emulsion having a particle size distribution of at least two different combined particle sizes and a binder content of greater than 75% bitumen, and
- applying said final emulsion to a surface so that a close proximity of the particles overwhelms the primary emulsifier to initiate and/or accelerate coalescence.
- 2. A method according to claim 1, wherein the second cationic bitumen emulsion is a pre-emulsion of 55 to 75% bitumen content by weight which is emulsified with extra bitumen by replacing part of a soap solution with the pre-emulsion, and a particle size distribution in the final emulsion is such that a mean particle size of the bitumen particles from the pre-emulsion is at a ratio of from 1:0.1-0.5 compared to a mean particle size of the bitumen particles from the extra bitumen.
- 3. A method according to claim 2, wherein the pre-emulsion contains from 55 to 75% by weight bitumen and 25 to 45% by weight of a surfactant solution.
- 4. A method according to claim 3, wherein the surfactant solution contains 0.1 to 8% by weight of the final emulsion of a cationic emulsifier and is adjusted to a pH between 0.8 and 5.0.
- 5. The method according to claim 1, wherein a recirculation loop is included in a manufacturing process to return a small percentage of the first cationic bitumen emulsion to the emulsifying apparatus, with recirculation being continued until a steady state is achieved wherein the particle size distribution is such that a mean particle size of the bitumen particles from the recirculated emulsion is at a ratio of from 0.1-0.5 compared to a mean particle size of the bitumen particles of the first bitumen emulsion, and the final emulsion contains 75% or greater by weight bitumen content.
- 6. A method according to claim 5, wherein the recirculated emulsion contains from 55 to 75% by weight bitumen and 25 to 45% by weight of a surfactant solution.
- 7. A method according to claim 6, wherein the surfactant solution contains 0.1 to 8% by weight of the final emulsion of a cationic emulsifier and is adjusted to a pH between 0.8 and 5.0.
- 8. A method according to claim 1, wherein 0.3 to 8% by weight of an emulsifier is added to the final emulsion.
- 9. A bitumen emulsion which is destabilized upon application to a surface, produced by the method according to claim 1.
