Claims
- 1. A composition for attaching a device to a substrate, said composition comprising:
- a monomer vehicle comprising at least one polycyanate ester monomer;
- a quantity of a tertiary amine sufficient to reduce resin bleed upon application of said composition to a substrate; wherein said tertiary amine has in the range of about 18 up to about 100 total carbon atoms, and wherein one side chain of said tertiary amine is at least about 16 carbon atoms in length; and optionally
- a metal catalyst.
- 2. A composition according to claim 1 wherein said monomer vehicle comprises at least two monomers, and wherein at least one monomer is a polycyanate ester monomer.
- 3. A composition according to claim 1 further comprising a filler.
- 4. A composition according to claim 3 wherein said filler is thermally and/or electrically conductive.
- 5. A composition according to claim 1 wherein said tertiary amine is hexadecyldimethyl-amine, dihexadecylmethylamine, octadecyldimethylamine, dioctadecylmethylamine, dimethylbehenylamine, dimethyleicosylamine, N,N,N'-trimethyl-N'-hexadecyl-1,2-diaminoethane, N,N,N'-trimethyl-N'-octadecyl-1,2-diamino-ethane, N,N,N'-trimethyl-N'-eicosyl-1,2-diaminoethane, N,N,N'-trimethyl-N'-behenyl-1,2-diaminoethane, N,N,N',N'-tetramethyl-1,20-diamino-(10,11-dioctyl)-eicosane, or a mixture of any two or more thereof.
- 6. A composition for attaching a device to a substrate, said composition comprising:
- monomer vehicle comprising at least one polycyanate ester monomer;
- filler; and
- a quantity of a tertiary amine sufficient to reduce resin bleed upon application of said composition to a substrate; wherein said tertiary amine has in the range of about 18 up to about 100 total carbon atoms, and wherein one side chain of said tertiary amine is at least about 16 carbon atoms in length.
- 7. A composition according to claim 6 wherein said monomer vehicle is present in an amount falling in the range of about 8 to 80 weight percent, based on the total weight of the composition.
- 8. A composition according to claim 6 wherein said tertiary amine is hexadecyldimethyl-amine, dihexadecylmethylamine, octadecyldimethylamine, dioctadecylmethylamine, dimethylbehenylamine, dimethyleicosylamine, N,N,N'-trimethyl-N'-hexadecyl-1,2-diaminoethane, N,N,N'-trimethyl-N'-octadecyl-1,2-diamino-ethane, N,N,N'-trimethyl-N'-eicosyl-1,2-diaminoethane, N,N,N'-trimethyl-N'-behenyl-1,2-diaminoethane, N,N,N',N'-tetramethyl-1,20-diamino-(10,11-dioctyl)-eicosane, or a mixture of any two or more thereof.
- 9. A method for reducing resin bleed of cyanate ester-containing compositions upon application to a substrate, said method comprising adding to said composition a quantity of a tertiary amine sufficient to reduce resin bleed upon application of said composition to a substrate; wherein said tertiary amine has in the range of about 18 up to about 100 total carbon atoms, and wherein one side chain of said tertiary amine is at least about 16 carbon atoms in length.
- 10. A method according to claim 15 wherein said tertiary amine is hexadecyldimethyl-amine, dihexadecylmethylamine, octadecyldimethylamine, dioctadecylmethylamine, dimethylbehenylamine, dimethyleicosylamine, N,N,N'-trimethyl-N'-hexadecyl-1,2-diaminoethane, N,N,N'-trimethyl-N'-octadecyl-1,2-diamino-ethane, N,N,N'-trimethyl-N'-eicosyl-1,2-diaminoethane, N,N,N'-trimethyl-N'-behenyl-1,2-diaminoethane, N,N,N',N'-tetramethyl-1,20-diamino-(10,11-dioctyl)-eicosane, or a mixture of any two or more thereof.
- 11. A composition according to claim 1 further comprising a polyfunctional compound.
- 12. A composition according to claim 11 wherein said polyfunctional compound is poly(4-hydroxystyrene).
- 13. A composition according to claim 1 wherein said tertiary amine is octadecyldimethylamine, dimethylbehenylamine or dimethyleicosylamine.
- 14. A composition according to claim 1 wherein the quantity of tertiary amine falls in the range of about 0.1 up to about 10 weight percent of the organic fraction of said cyanate ester-containing composition.
- 15. A composition according to claim 1 wherein the quantity of tertiary amine falls in the range of about 0.1 up to about 5 weight percent of the organic fraction of said cyanate ester-containing composition.
- 16. A composition according to claim 6 further comprising a polyfunctional compound.
- 17. A composition according to claim 16 wherein said polyfunctional compound is poly(4-hydroxystyrene).
- 18. A composition according to claim 6 wherein said tertiary amine is octadecyldimethylamine, dimethylbehenylamine or dimethyleicosylamine.
- 19. A composition according to claim 6 wherein the quantity of tertiary amine falls in the range of about 0.1 up to about 10 weight percent of the organic fraction of said cyanate ester-containing composition.
- 20. A composition according to claim 6 wherein the quantity of tertiary amine falls in the range of about 0.1 up to about 5 weight percent of the organic fraction of said cyanate ester-containing composition.
- 21. A method according to claim 9 wherein said composition further comprises a polyfunctional compound.
- 22. A method according to claim 21 wherein said polyfunctional compound is poly(4-hydroxystyrene).
- 23. A method according to claim 9 wherein said tertiary amine is octadecyldimethylamine, dimethylbehenylamine or dimethyleicosylamine.
- 24. A method according to claim 9 wherein the quantity of tertiary amine falls in the range of about 0.1 up to about 10 weight percent of the organic fraction of said cyanate ester-containing composition.
- 25. A method according to claim 9 wherein the quantity of tertiary amine falls in the range of about 0.1 up to about 5 weight percent of the organic fraction of said cyanate ester-containing composition.
