Claims
- 1. A composition comprising: a physical blend of (a) an ethylene-based polymer and (b) one or more organic silicon compounds selected from the group consisting of hydrocarbon-substituted polyhedral oligosilsesquioxanes and hydrocarbon-substituted polyhedral oligomeric silicates.
- 2. The composition of claim 1 wherein the ethylene-based polymer has a crystallinity of less than about 20%.
- 3. The composition of claim 1 wherein the ethylene-based polymer has a crystallinity of less than about 10%.
- 4. The composition of claim 1 wherein the ethylene-based polymer has a crystallinity of less than about 5%.
- 5. The composition of claim 1 wherein the ethylene-based polymer is selected from the group consisting of ethylene-propylene copolymers, fluorinated ethylene-propylene copolymers, and hexafluoropropylene-based copolymers.
- 6. The composition of claim 1 wherein the organic silicon compound is a polyhedral oligosilsesquioxane of the general formula [RSiO1.5]n, where n is an even number and R is selected from the group consisting of substituted and unsubstituted aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbon groups having one to thirty carbon atoms.
- 7. The composition of claim 6 wherein the polyhedral oligosilsesquioxane is partially fluorinated or perfluorinated.
- 8. The composition of claim 1 wherein the organic silicon compound is a polyhedral oligomeric silicate of the general formula [RMe2SiOSiO1.5]n, where n is an even number and R is selected from the group consisting of substituted and unsubstituted aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbon groups having one to thirty carbon atoms.
- 9. The composition of claim 8 wherein the polyhedral oligomeric silicate is partially fluorinated or perfluorinated.
- 10. The composition of claim 1 wherein the organic silicon compound comprises up to about 30 percent by weight of the composition.
- 11. The composition of claim 1 wherein the organic silicon compound comprises from about 1 to about 20 percent by weight of the composition.
- 12. The composition of claim 1 wherein the organic silicon compound comprises from about 5 to about 10 percent by weight of the composition.
- 13. The composition of claim 1 wherein the organic silicon compound is selected from the group consisting of octamethyl-POSS and octaisobutyl-POSS.
- 14. A process for preparing a blend composition comprising the steps of:
providing an ethylene-based polymer; and mixing the ethylene-based polymer with one or more organic silicon compounds selected from the group consisting of hydrocarbon-substituted polyhedral oligosilsesquioxanes and hydrocarbon-substituted polyhedral oligomeric silicates.
- 15. The process of claim 14 wherein the step of mixing comprises solution blending.
- 16. The process according to claim 14 wherein the step of mixing comprises melt blending.
- 17. The process according to claim 14 wherein the step of mixing comprises combining the ethylene-based polymer and the organic silicon compound to form a mixture and then heating the mixture to a temperature above the glass transition temperature of the polymer.
- 18. The composition of claim 14 wherein the ethylene-based polymer has a crystallinity of less than about 20%.
- 19. The composition of claim 14 wherein the ethylene-based polymer has a crystallinity of less than about 10%.
- 20. The composition of claim 14 wherein the ethylene-based polymer has a crystallinity of less than about 5%.
- 21. The process of claim 14 wherein the ethylene-based polymer is selected from the group consisting of ethylene-propylene copolymers, fluorinated ethylene-propylene copolymers, and hexafluoropropylene-based copolymers.
- 22. The process of claim 14 wherein the organic silicon compound is a polyhedral oligosilsesquioxane of the general formula [RSiO1.5]n, where n is an even number and R is selected from the group consisting of substituted or unsubstituted aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbon groups having one to thirty carbon atoms.
- 23. The process of claim 22 wherein the polyhedral oligosilsesquioxane is partially fluorinated or perfluorinated.
- 24. The process of claim 14 wherein the organic silicon compound is a polyhedral oligomeric silicate of the general formula [RMe2SiOSiO1.5]n, where n is an even number and R is selected from the group consisting of substituted or unsubstituted aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbon groups having one to thirty carbon atoms.
- 25. The process of claim 24 wherein the polyhedral oligomeric silicate is partially fluorinated or perfluorinated.
