Claims
- 1. A block copolymer comprising
- (a) 5 to 95% by weight, based on the amount of (a)+(b), of a chemically modified polyolefin,
- (b) 95 to 5% by weight, based on the amount of (a)+(b), of a thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU), copolyester or copolyamide, and
- (c) 0.05 to 5.0 parts by weight, based on 100 parts by weight of (a)+(b), of one or more coupling agent(s).
- 2. The block copolymer according to claim 1, wherein the chemically modified polyolefin is selected from grafted polyolefins or blends thereof.
- 3. The block copolymer according to claim 1, wherein the thermoplastic polyurethane is obtained from the reaction of at least one organic diisocyanate, at least one polymeric diol and at least one difunctional chain extender.
- 4. The block copolymer according to claim 1, wherein the thermoplastic copolyester is selected from polyester block copolymers comprising a high-melting crystalline segment mainly composed of an aromatic polyester unit and a low-melting polymer segment mainly composed of an aliphatic polyether unit and/or aliphatic polyester unit or blends thereof.
- 5. The block copolymer according to claim 1, wherein the thermoplastic copolyamide is selected from polyether block amides, or blends thereof.
- 6. The block copolymer according to claim 1, wherein the coupling agent is selected from aromatic, aliphatic and cycloaliphatic diisocyanates or mixtures thereof alone or optionally in combination with a co-coupling agent selected from linear or branched aliphatic or aromatic diamines, diols, diepoxides, amino/hydroxy or amino/epoxy compounds containing up to 18 carbon atoms.
- 7. A method for preparing the block copolymer of claim 1 comprising the steps of melt-mixing the polymers together and adding the coupling agent(s) during or after the mixing of the polymers.
- 8. Method of compatibilizing blends selected from polar/non-polar thermoplastic elastomers, non-polar polyolefins/polar thermoplastic elastomers and non-polar thermoplastic elastomers/engineering resins by incorporating therein a block copolymer compatibilizer comprising the reaction product of
- (i) 5% to 95% by weight, based on (i)+(ii), of an olefin copolymer having a functional group in the main or side chain thereof,
- (ii) 95% to 5% by weight, based on (i)+(ii), of a thermoplastic polyurethane, thermoplastic copolyester or thermoplastic copolyamide, and
- (iii) 0.05 to 5 parts by weight, based on 100 parts of (i)+(ii), of one or more isocyanates reactive with (i) and (ii).
- 9. Method according to claim 8 wherein the polar thermoplastic elastomer is selected from thermoplastic polyurethanes, copolyesters and copolyamides.
- 10. Method according to claim 8 wherein the non-polar thermoplastic elastomer is selected from polypropylene/ethylene propylene diene dynamically vulcanized alloys, styrene/ethylene/butene block copolymers.
- 11. Method according to claim 8 wherein the non-polar polyolefins are selected from polyethylene and polypropylene.
- 12. Method according to claim 8 wherein the engineering resins are selected from polyamide, polybutylene terephthalate, polyethylene terephthalate, styrene acrylonitrile butadiene, polycarbonate polyphenylene oxide, polyphenylene sulfide, polyacetals and blends thereof.
- 13. Method according to claim 8 wherein the amount of the compatibilizer is 1% to 40% by weight, based on the total amount of the TPE-blend and the compatibilizer.
- 14. A blend of thermoplastic elastomers comprising
- (a) 2% to 98% by weight, based on (a)+(b), of a non-polar thermoplastic elastomer,
- (b) 98% to 2% by weight, based on (a)+(b), of a polar thermoplastic elastomer, and
- (c) 1% to 40% by weight, based on 100 parts by weight of (a) and (b), of a block copolymer comprising the reaction product of
- (i) 5% to 95% by weight, based on (i)+(ii), of an olefin copolymer having a functional group in the main or side chain thereof,
- (ii) 95% to 5% by weight, based on (i)+(ii), of a thermoplastic polyurethane, thermoplastic copolyester or thermoplastic copolyamide, and
- (iii) 0.05 to 5 parts by weight, based on 100 parts of (i)+(ii), of one or more isocyanates reactive with (i) and (ii).
- 15. The blend according to claim 14 wherein the non-polar thermoplastic elastomer is selected from polypropylene/ethylene propylene diene dynamically vulcanized alloys, styrene/ethylene/butene-block copolymers.
- 16. The blend according to claim 14 wherein the polar thermoplastic elastomer is selected from thermoplastic polyurethanes, copolyesters and copolyamides.
- 17. The blend according to claim 14 wherein component (i) is polypropylene grafted with maleic anhydride, component (ii) is a thermoplastic polyurethane, and component (iii) is a diisocyanate optionally in combination with a co-coupling agent.
