Claims
- 1. In a fluid-filled extra-corporeal blood aspiration system for sampling pressurized blood from the human body, the system being for connection to a catheter having a bore in fluid communication with a pressurized blood vessel, the system having means for elevating the fluid pressure above the pressure within said blood vessel so that fluid flows from the system into the blood vessel and the system having means for reducing said fluid pressure below the pressure within said blood vessel so that blood flows from said blood vessel into said system, the improvement comprising:
- an aspirator receiver forming part of the blood aspiration system and including a housing having a flow channel for communication with the human vasculature for flowing blood therethrough, said housing carrying a receiver portion penetrable by a cannula to place a bore of the cannula in communication with said flow channel and to allow sampling of blood;
- said receiver portion having an open receiver channel formed therein upon penetration thereof by the cannula, said receiver portion being formed of a resilient material whereby said open receiver channel will be normally closed following removal of the cannula;
- said receiver portion having an upper portion and a lower portion, said upper portion being more compliant than said lower portion whereby said upper portion is penetrated by the cannula with the application of a lesser force thereto than that required to penetrate the lower portion.
- 2. A system as in claim 1, wherein said upper and lower portions of said receiver portion are defined by separately formed upper and lower receiver elements.
- 3. A system as in claim 1, wherein said upper receiver portion is formed from a material which is more compliant than a material from which said lower receiver portion is formed.
- 4. A system as in claim 1, wherein said upper receiver portion is thicker than said lower receiver portion.
- 5. A system as in claim 1, in combination with an aspirator including an axially extending cannula having a blunt distal tip, said cannula having a bore with first and second openings adjacent opposite ends thereof, said aspirator further including a receptacle in communication with said bore through said second opening thereof, said cannula being adapted to be inserted into and through said receiver portion.
- 6. Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein said receiver portion has inner and outer surfaces, interfacing with the flow channel and ambient atmosphere, respectively, said receiver channel extending between said inner and outer surfaces and normally sealing said housing receiver portion between said flow channel and ambient atmosphere so that blood flowing through said flow channel is in direct contact with said receiver channel.
- 7. In a fluid-filled extra-corporeal blood aspiration system for sampling pressurized blood from the human body, the system being for connection to a catheter having a bore in fluid communication with a pressurized blood vessel, the system having means for elevating the fluid pressure above the pressure within said blood vessel so that fluid flows from the system into the blood vessel and the system having means for reducing said fluid pressure below the pressure within said blood vessel so that blood flows from said blood vessel into said system, the improvement comprising:
- an aspirator receiver forming part of the blood aspiration system and including a housing having an outer surface and an inner surface and having a flow channel for communication with the human vasculature for flowing blood therethrough, said housing carrying a receiver portion penetrable by a cannula to place a bore of the cannula in communication with said flow channel and to allow sampling of blood;
- said receiver portion being preperforated to form a receiver channel for receiving the cannula upon penetration thereof by the cannula, said receiver portion being formed of a resilient material whereby said receiver channel is normally closed; and
- means for enabling penetration of said resilient material by the cannula with less force adjacent said outer surface than adjacent said inner surface.
- 8. A system according to claim 7 wherein said enabling means includes a housing portion defined through a portion of said housing for receiving said receiver portion, said housing portion having a greater lateral extent adjacent said outer surface than adjacent said inner surface, said receiver channel extending between said inner and outer surfaces and normally sealing said housing portion between said flow channel and ambient atmosphere.
- 9. A system according to claim 7, wherein said receiver portion has an upper portion and a lower portion, said upper portion being more compliant than said lower portion whereby said upper portion is penetrated by the cannula with the application of a lesser force thereto than that required to penetrate the lower portion.
- 10. A system as in claim 9, wherein said upper and lower portions of said receiver portion are defined by separately formed upper and lower receiver elements.
- 11. A system as in claim 9, wherein said upper receiver portion is formed from a material which is more compliant than a material from which said lower receiver portion is formed.
- 12. A system as in claim 9, wherein said upper receiver portion is thicker than said lower receiver portion.
- 13. A system as in claim 9, in combination with an aspirator including an axially extending cannula having a blunt distal tip, said cannula having a bore with first and second openings adjacent opposite ends thereof, said aspirator further including a receptacle in communication with said bore through said second opening thereof, said cannula being adapted to be inserted into and through said receiver portion.
- 14. Apparatus for use with a blood aspiration system for sampling blood from the human body, comprising:
- an aspirator including an axially extending cannula having a distal tip, said cannula having a bore with first and second openings adjacent opposite ends thereof, said aspirator further including a receptacle in communication with said bore through said second opening thereof;
- an aspiration receiver forming part of the blood aspiration system and including a housing having an outer surface and an inner surface and a flow channel for communication with the human vasculature for flowing blood through the flow channel, said housing having a portion penetrable by said cannula to locate the first opening of said cannula in communication with said flow channel and enable blood flow from said flow channel through said first opening, said bore and said second opening into said receptacle;
- said penetrable portion forming an opening upon penetration thereof with said cannula for receiving said cannula, said penetrable portion being formed of a resilient material for sealing said opening upon withdrawal of said cannula from said penetrable portion; and
- means for enabling penetration of said resilient material by the cannula with less force adjacent said outer surface than adjacent said inner surface.
- 15. A system according to claim 14 wherein said enabling means includes a housing portion defined through a portion of said housing for receiving said penetrable portion, said housing portion having a greater lateral extent adjacent said outer surface than adjacent said inner surface, said receiving portion extending between said inner and outer surfaces and normally sealing said housing portion between said flow channel and ambient atmosphere.
- 16. A system according to claim 14, wherein said penetrable portion has an upper portion and a lower portion, said upper portion being more compliant than said lower portion whereby said upper portion is penetrated by the cannula with the application of a lesser force thereto than that required to penetrate the lower portion.
- 17. A system as in claim 16, wherein said upper and lower portions of said receiver portion are defined by separately formed upper and lower receiver elements.
- 18. A system as in claim 16, wherein said upper receiver portion is formed from a material which is more compliant than a material from which said lower receiver portion is formed.
- 19. A system as in claim 16, wherein said upper receiver portion is thicker than said lower receiver portion.
- 20. A system as in claim 14, wherein said cannula has a blunt tip.
- 21. Apparatus according to claim 14 wherein said penetrable portion has inner and outer surfaces and a central recess in said outer surface for initially locating said cannula tip for penetration through said housing portion and disposition of said first opening of said cannula in communication with said flow channel.
- 22. A system as in claim 21, wherein said central recess has a greater lateral extent adjacent said outer surface than inwardly therefrom.
- 23. In a fluid delivery system for administration of fluid to a patient, the system being connected to a catheter having a bore for fluid communication with a blood vessel, the system including a connection terminal, the improvement comprising:
- a receiver along said connection terminal forming part of the fluid delivery system and including a housing having a flow channel for communication with the human vasculature for flowing fluid therethrough, said housing carrying a receiver portion penetrable by a cannula to place a bore of the cannula in communication with said flow channel;
- said receiver portion including a receiver channel opened upon penetration thereof by the cannula, said receiver portion being formed of a resilient material;
- said receiver portion having an inner and outer surface interacting with the flow channel and ambient atmosphere, respectively,
- said housing including a frustrum-shaped bore and including an inner end and an outer end adjacent said flow channel and ambient atmosphere, respectively, said receiver portion having a greater lateral dimension adjacent said inner surface than the lateral dimension of said bore adjacent said inner end so that said receiver portion adjacent said inner surface is compressed by said bore adjacent said inner end so that upon removal of said cannula from said receiver channel, said receiver channel is tightly closed by said compression of said receiver portion so that fluid from within said flow channel is prevented from leaking through said receiver channel.
- 24. The system of claim 23 wherein said receiver portion is a plug having a circular cross-section adjacent said inner surface.
- 25. The system of claim 24 wherein said housing bore has an apex adjacent said flow channel, said plug having an uncompressed diameter which is greater than said housing bore apex.
- 26. The system of claim 23 wherein said plug is comprised of silicone.
- 27. A system according to claim 23, wherein said receiver portion has an upper portion and a lower portion, said upper portion being more compliant than said lower portion whereby said upper portion is penetrated by the cannula with the application of a lesser force thereto than that required to penetrate the lower portion.
- 28. A system as in claim 27, wherein said upper and lower portions of said receiver portion are defined by separately formed upper and lower receiver elements.
- 29. A system as in claim 27, wherein said upper receiver portion is formed from a material which is more compliant than a material from which said lower receiver portion is formed.
- 30. A system as in claim 27, wherein said upper receiver portion is thicker than said lower receiver portion.
- 31. A system as in claim 27, in combination with an aspirator including an axially extending cannula having a blunt distal tip, said cannula having a bore with first and second openings adjacent opposite ends thereof, said aspirator further including a receptacle in communication with said bore through said second opening thereof, said cannula being adapted to be inserted into and through said receiver portion.
- 32. A medical system for the sterile transfer of fluid, through a cannula, between a fluid-filled chamber and a fluid receptacle comprising, a fluid-filled chamber defined by a housing partially enclosing a receiver, said receiver including an upper receiver portion and a lower receiver portion, said receiver being capable of receiving at least a portion of a cannula, said cannula portion defining a displacement volume, said cannula expanding said receiver by compressing said receiver in response to the displacement volume of said cannula portion when said cannula portion is inserted into said receiver, said receiver being comprised of an elastic material which is compressed to a greater extent in said lower receiver portion, and which resists compression by cannula insertion to define a transverse spring force against said cannula, said spring force being less adjacent said upper receiver portion than adjacent said lower portion, whereby said upper receiver is penetrated by said cannula with the application of lesser force than is required to penetrate said lower receiver.
- 33. The system of claim 32 wherein said upper receiver portion is more compliant than said lower receiver portion.
- 34. The system of claim 33 wherein said upper receiver portion is formed from a material which is more compliant than the material from which lower receiver portion is formed.
- 35. The system of claim 33 wherein both said upper and lower portions are formed of silicone, said upper portion having a lesser durometer than said lower portion.
- 36. The system of claim 32 further including circumferential side walls defining a bore having an axis extending toward said chamber, said receiver being at least partially contained within said bore, said bore having a first end adjacent said chamber and a second end.
- 37. The system of claim 36 wherein said side walls define a transverse dimension of said bore, said transverse dimension being smaller adjacent said first end than adjacent said second end.
- 38. The system of claim 37 wherein said side walls taper inwardly from adjacent said second end toward adjacent said first end so that said side walls define a frustrum-shaped bore.
- 39. The system of claim 38 wherein said receiver has a circular transverse cross-section and wherein during manufacture said receiver is compressed within said frustrum-shaped bore so that the lower portion of said receiver is more transversely compressed by said tapered side walls than said upper portion of said receiver to form a frustrum-shaped receiver.
- 40. The system of claim 36 wherein said side walls project away from said housing.
- 41. The system of claim 36 wherein said bore communicates with said chamber through said first end, said receiver occluding said bore.
- 42. The system of claim 36 wherein said receiver is compressed into said bore.
- 43. A medical system for sterile transfer of fluid through a cannula between a fluid-filled container and a fluid receptacle the system comprising:
- a fluid-filled container including a housing defining a bore carrying an elastic receiver, said receiver defining an axis and including an upper portion, a lower portion, and an open axial perforation established by forcing the cannula through said receiver, said elastic receiver having an uncompressed frustrum shape, said receiver and said bore being sized and configured so that said bore compresses said receiver transversely to said axis to a greater extent along said lower portion than along said upper portion when said receiver is installed within said bore, said compression of said receiver defining a transverse spring force along said perforation to tightly seal said perforation.
- 44. A medical system for sterile transfer of fluid through a cannula between a fluid-filled container and a fluid receptacle, the system comprising a fluid-filled container carrying an elastic receiver, said receiver defining an axis and including an upper portion, a lower portion, and an axial perforation extending through said receiver, said system further including circumferential side walls defining a bore having an axis extending toward said chamber, said bore having a first end adjacent said chamber and a second end and wherein said bore communicates with said chamber through said first end, said side walls tapering inwardly from adjacent said second end toward adjacent said first end so that said side walls define a frustrum-shaped bore, said receiver being at least partially contained within said bore, said receiver occluding said bore, said receiver having a circular transverse cross-section and wherein during manufacture said receiver is compressed within said frustrum-shaped bore so that the lower portion of said receiver is more transversely compressed by said tapered side walls than said upper portion of said receiver to form a compressed frustrum-shaped receiver, the compression of said elastic receiver by said frustrum-shaped bore defining a transverse spring force along said perforation to tightly seal said perforation, said spring force being greater along said lower portion than along said upper portion whereby said seal of said perforation is tighter along said lower portion than along said upper portion.
- 45. In a fluid-filled extra-corporeal blood aspiration system for sampling pressurized blood from the human body, the system being for connection to a catheter having a bore in fluid communication with a pressurized blood vessel, the system having means for elevating the fluid pressure above the pressure within said blood vessel so that fluid flows from the system into the blood vessel and the system having means for reducing said fluid pressure below the pressure within said blood vessel so that blood flows from said blood vessel into said system, the improvement comprising:
- an aspirator receiver forming part of the blood aspiration system and including a housing having a flow channel for communication with the human vasculature for flowing blood therethrough, said housing carrying a receiver portion penetrable by a cannula to place a bore of the cannula in communication with said flow channel and to allow sampling of blood;
- said receiver portion being preperforated to form a receiver channel for receiving the cannula upon penetration thereof by the cannula, said receiver portion being formed of a resilient material whereby said receiver channel is normally closed;
- said receiver portion having an upper portion and a lower portion defined by separately formed upper and lower receiver elements, said upper portion being more compliant than said lower portion whereby said upper portion is penetrated by the cannula with the application of a lesser force thereto than that required to penetrate the lower portion.
- 46. In a fluid-filled extra-corporeal blood aspiration system for sampling pressurized blood from the human body, the system being for connection to a catheter having a bore in fluid communication with a pressurized blood vessel, the system having means for elevating the fluid pressure above the pressure within said blood vessel so that fluid flows from the system into the blood vessel and the system having means for reducing said fluid pressure below the pressure within said blood vessel so that blood flows from said blood vessel into said system, the improvement comprising:
- an aspirator receiver forming part of the blood aspiration system and including a housing having a flow channel for communication with the human vasculature for flowing blood therethrough, said housing carrying a receiver portion penetrable by a cannula to place a bore of the cannula in communication with said flow channel and to allow sampling of blood;
- said receiver portion being preperforated to form a receiver channel for receiving the cannula upon penetration thereof by the cannula, said receiver portion being formed of a resilient material whereby said receiver channel is normally closed;
- said receiver portion having an upper portion and a lower portion defined by separately formed upper and lower receiver elements, said upper receiver portion being formed from a material which is more compliant than a material from which said lower receiver portion is formed, whereby said upper portion is penetrated by the cannula with the application of a lesser force thereto than that required to penetrate the lower portion.
- 47. In a fluid-filled extra-corporeal blood aspiration system for sampling pressurized blood from the human body, the system being for connection to a catheter having a bore in fluid communication with a pressurized blood vessel, the system having means for elevating the fluid pressure above the pressure within said blood vessel so that fluid flows from the system into the blood vessel and the system having means for reducing said fluid pressure below the pressure within said blood vessel so that blood flows from said blood vessel into said system, the improvement comprising:
- an aspirator receiver forming part of the blood aspiration system and including a housing having a flow channel for communication with the human vasculature for flowing blood therethrough, said housing carrying a receiver portion penetrable by a cannula to place a bore of the cannula in communication with said flow channel and to allow sampling of blood;
- said receiver portion being preperforated to form a receiver channel for receiving the cannula upon penetration thereof by the cannula, said receiver portion being formed of a resilient material whereby said receiver channel is normally closed;
- said receiver portion having an upper portion and a lower portion defined by separately formed upper and lower receiver elements, said upper portion being more compliant than said lower portion whereby said upper portion is penetrated by the cannula with the application of a lesser force thereto than that required to penetrate the lower portion;
- said receiver portion having inner and outer surfaces, interfacing with the flow channel and ambient atmosphere, respectively, said receiver channel extending between said inner and outer surfaces and normally sealing said housing receiver portion between said flow channel and ambient atmosphere so that blood flowing through said flow channel is in direct contact with said receiver channel;
- said receiver portion further having a central recess in said outer surface adjacent said receiver channel for initially receiving the distal tip of said cannula and locating said cannula for penetration through said receiver channel in said housing portion and disposition of said bore of said cannula in communication with said flow channel;
- said flow channel being generally cylindrical in shape, the inner surface of said receiver portion forming part of said flow channel having an arcuate segment forming a portion of the generally cylindrical shape of said flow channel.
- 48. In a fluid-filled extra-corporeal blood aspiration system for sampling pressurized blood from the human body, the system being for connection to a catheter having a bore in fluid communication with a pressurized blood vessel, the system having means for elevating the fluid pressure above the pressure within said blood vessel so that fluid flows from the system into the blood vessel and the system having means for reducing said fluid pressure below the pressure within said blood vessel so that blood flows from said blood vessel into said system, the improvement comprising:
- an aspirator receiver forming part of the blood aspiration system and including a housing having an outer surface and an inner surface and having a flow channel for communication with the human vasculature for flowing blood therethrough, said housing carrying a receiver portion penetrable by a cannula to place a bore of the cannula in communication with said flow channel and to allow sampling of blood;
- said receiver portion being preperforated to form a receiver channel for receiving the cannula upon penetration thereof by the cannula, said receiver portion being formed of a resilient material whereby said receiver channel is normally closed; and
- means for enabling penetration of said resilient material by the cannula with less force adjacent said outer surface than adjacent said inner surface;
- said receiver portion having an upper portion and a lower portion defined by separately formed upper and lower receiver elements, said upper portion being more compliant than said lower portion whereby said upper portion is penetrated by the cannula with the application of a lesser force thereto than that required to penetrate the lower portion.
- 49. In a fluid-filled extra-corporeal blood aspiration system for sampling pressurized blood from the human body, the system being for connection to a catheter having a bore in fluid communication with a pressurized blood vessel, the system having means for elevating the fluid pressure above the pressure within said blood vessel so that fluid flows from the system into the blood vessel and the system having means for reducing said fluid pressure below the pressure within said blood vessel so that blood flows from said blood vessel into said system, the improvement comprising:
- an aspirator receiver forming part of the blood aspiration system and including a housing having an outer surface and an inner surface and having a flow channel for communication with the human vasculature for flowing blood therethrough, said housing carrying a receiver portion penetrable by a cannula to place a bore of the cannula in communication with said flow channel and to allow sampling of blood;
- said receiver portion being preperforated to form a receiver channel for receiving the cannula upon penetration thereof by the cannula, said receiver portion being formed of a resilient material whereby said receiver channel is normally closed; and
- means for enabling penetration of said resilient material by the cannula with less force adjacent said outer surface than adjacent said inner surface;
- wherein said receiver portion has an upper portion and a lower portion, said upper receiver portion is formed from a material which is more compliant than a material from which said lower receiver portion is formed, whereby said upper portion is penetrated by the cannula with the application of a lesser force thereto than that required to penetrate the lower portion.
- 50. Apparatus for use with a blood aspiration system for sampling blood from the human body, comprising:
- an aspirator including an axially extending cannula having a distal tip, said cannula having a bore with first and second openings adjacent opposite ends thereof, said aspirator further including a receptacle in communication with said bore through said second opening thereof;
- an aspiration receiver forming part of the blood aspiration system and including a housing having an outer surface and an inner surface and a flow channel for communication with the human vasculature for flowing blood through the flow channel, said housing having a portion penetrable by said cannula to locate the first opening of said cannula in communication with said flow channel and enable blood flow from said flow channel through said first opening, said bore and said second opening into said receptacle;
- said penetrable portion forming an opening upon penetration thereof with said cannula for receiving said cannula, said penetrable portion being formed of a resilient material for sealing said opening upon withdrawal of said cannula from said penetrable portion; and
- means for enabling penetration of said resilient material by the cannula with less force adjacent said outer surface than adjacent said inner surface;
- wherein said penetrable portion has an upper portion and a lower portion defined by separately formed upper and lower receiver elements, said upper portion being more compliant than said lower portion whereby said upper portion is penetrated by the cannula with the application of a lesser force thereto than that required to penetrate the lower portion.
- 51. Apparatus for use with a blood aspiration system for sampling blood from the human body, comprising:
- an aspirator including an axially extending cannula having a distal tip, said cannula having a bore with first and second openings adjacent opposite ends thereof, said aspirator further including a receptacle in communication with said bore through said second opening thereof;
- an aspiration receiver forming part of the blood aspiration system and including a housing having an outer surface and an inner surface and a flow channel for communication with the human vasculature for flowing blood through the flow channel, said housing having a portion penetrable by said cannula to locate the first opening of said cannula in communication with said flow channel and enable blood flow from said flow channel through said first opening, said bore and said second opening into said receptacle;
- said penetrable portion forming an opening upon penetration thereof with said cannula for receiving said cannula, said penetrable portion being formed of a resilient material for sealing said opening upon withdrawal of said cannula from said penetrable portion; and
- means for enabling penetration of said resilient material by the cannula with less force adjacent said outer surface than adjacent said inner surface;
- wherein said penetrable portion has an upper portion and a lower portion, said upper receiver portion is formed from a material which is more compliant than a material from which said lower receiver portion is formed, whereby said upper portion is penetrated by the cannula with the application of a lesser force thereto than that required to penetrate the lower portion.
- 52. In a fluid delivery system for administration of fluid to a patient, the system being connected to a catheter having a bore in fluid communication with a blood vessel, the system including a connection terminal, the improvements comprising:
- a receiver along said connection terminal forming part of the fluid delivery system and including a housing having a flow channel for communication with the human vasculature for flowing fluid therethrough, said housing carrying a receiver portion penetrable by said cannula to place a bore of the cannula in communication with said flow channel;
- said receiver portion being preperforated to form a receiver channel for receiving the cannula upon penetration thereof by the cannula, said receiver portion being formed of a resilient material whereby said receiver channel is normally closed; and
- means for enabling penetration of said resilient material by the cannula with less force adjacent said outer surface than adjacent said inner surface;
- wherein said receiver portion has an upper portion and a lower portion defined by separately formed upper and lower receiver elements, said upper portion being more compliant than said lower portion whereby said upper portion is penetrated by the cannula with the application of a lesser force thereto than that required to penetrate the lower portion.
- 53. A medical system for sterile transfer of fluid through a cannula and between a fluid-filled chamber and a fluid receptacle, said system comprising a fluid-filled chamber being defined by a housing and carrying a receiver, said receiver including an upper portion and a lower portion and an axial perforation extending through said receiver, said perforation being capable of receiving at least a portion of said cannula, said cannula portion defining a displacement volume, said cannula expanding said perforation by compressing said receiver in response to the displacement volume of said cannula portion when said cannula portion is inserted into said perforation, said receiver resisting said compression to define a transverse spring force against said cannula, said upper receiver portion being formed from a material which is more compliant than the material from which lower receiver portion is formed said spring force is less adjacent said upper portion than adjacent said lower portion, whereby the outer portion of said receiver is penetrated by said cannula with the application of lesser force than is required to penetrate the inner portion thereof.
- 54. A medical system for sterile transfer of fluid through a cannula and between a fluid-filled chamber and a fluid receptacle, said system comprising a fluid-filled chamber being defined by a housing and carrying a receiver, said receiver including an upper portion and a lower portion and an axial perforation extending through said receiver, said perforation being capable of receiving at least a portion of said cannula, said cannula portion defining a displacement volume, said cannula expanding said perforation by compressing said receiver in response to the displacement volume of said cannula portion when said cannula portion is inserted into said perforation, said receiver resisting said compression to define a transverse spring force against said cannula, said upper and lower receiver portions being formed from silicone with said upper receiver portion being more compliant and having a lesser durometer than said lower receiver portion so that said spring force is less adjacent said upper portion than adjacent said lower portion, whereby the outer portion of said receiver is penetrated by said cannula with the application of lesser force than is required to penetrate the inner portion thereof.
