Claims
- 1. A medical device for contact with a blood stream comprising an article having coated thereon a composition comprising a mixture of a quaternary ammonium complex of heparin and about 2 to 75% by weight of a noncuring lubricating silicone, said complex having the formula ##STR3## wherein R.sub.1, R.sub.2, R.sub.3 and R.sub.4 are independently selected from the group consisting of an alkyl group of 1 to about 18 carbon atoms and an aralkyl group of about 7 to 18 carbon atoms and H.sup.- is a negative ion of heparin, said silicone having a viscosity of about 20 to 1,000,000 centistokes.
- 2. The device of claim 1 wherein said viscosity is from about 1,000 to 60,000 centistokes.
- 3. The device of claim 1 wherein R.sub.1, R.sub.2 and R.sub.3 are independently alkyl groups selected from the group having 8 to 18 carbon atoms and R.sub.4 is an alkyl group selected from the group having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms.
- 4. The device of claim 1 wherein said article is a catheter.
- 5. The device of claim 1 wherein said device is a catheter introducer.
- 6. A medical device of claim 1 for contact with a blood stream comprising a shaped article having coated thereon a composition comprising a mixture of a quaternary ammonium complex of heparin and about 20 to 50% by weight of a noncuring lubricating polydimethylsiloxane, said complex having the formula ##STR4## wherein R.sub.1, R.sub.2 and R.sub.3 are independently selected from the group consisting of a straight chain alkyl group of 8 to 18 carbon atoms, R.sub.4 is selected from the group consisting of a lower alkyl group of 1 to 4 carbon atoms and H.sup.- is a negative ion of heparin, said polydimethylsiloxane having a viscosity of about 1,000 to 60,000 centistokes.
