Claims
- 1. A system for sealing the puncture made through the skin and body tissue of a patient into a body cavity, said system comprising:
- a temporary sealing assembly including:
- an elongate control member having a length greater than the length of the puncture to be sealed and a cross-sectional size smaller than that of the puncture so that said control member passes freely through the puncture,
- an expandable member fixedly mounted on said control member at a first prescribed location axially of said control member so that a portion of said control member extends exteriorly of the patient when said expandable member is located within the body cavity, said expandable member having a collapsed condition smaller than that of the puncture for passage of said collapsed expandable member through the puncture into the body cavity and an expanded condition larger than that of the puncture to prevent passage of said expandable member through the puncture so that said control member can be used to pull said expanded expandable member in the body cavity up against that end of the puncture opening into the body cavity to locate said expanded expandable member at the end of the puncture, and
- positioning indicia at a prescribed first position on said control member where said prescribed first position is located a first prescribed distance from that portion of said expanded expandable member contacting the edge of the body cavity at the end of the puncture sufficiently great for the indicia to be located outside the patient when said expanded expandable member is closing that end of the puncture opening into the body cavity; and,
- an applicator including:
- an introducer member defining a projecting end thereon and an opening therethrough through which said control member can pass, and
- indicator means located a second prescribed distance from said projecting end of said introducer member, said second prescribed distance a prescribed small amount less than said first prescribed distance so that, when said introducer member of said applicator is inserted over said control member while said expandable member is expanded and pulled up against that end of the puncture opening into the body cavity using said control member, and said applicator is moved along said control member until said indicator means is aligned with said indicator means on said control member, there is a positive indication that said projecting end of said introducer member is located inside the puncture in the vicinity of the end of the puncture opening into the body cavity but spaced from the end of the puncture by said prescribed small amount to insure that the projecting end of said introducer member is not projecting into the body cavity.
- 2. The system of claim 1 for depositing a sealing material in the puncture
- wherein said introducer member defines a material receiving chamber therein opening onto the projecting end of said introducer member;
- wherein said applicator further includes:
- plunger means slidably mounted in said material receiving chamber and over which said introducer member is movable between an initial position in which the sealing material is housed within said material receiving chamber and a withdrawn position in which said introducer member is withdrawn from around the sealing material while said sealing material is held in position by said plunger means; and
- wherein said indicator means is located said second prescribed distance from said projecting end of said introducer member when said introducer member is in said initial position and is substantially axially fixed with respect to said plunger means so that retraction of said introducer member from said initial position to said withdrawn position after said applicator is moved to the position where said indicator means is aligned with said positioning indicia and while said indicator means is maintained in alignment with said positioning indicia causes the sealing material to be maintained in the puncture with the leading end thereof located inside the puncture in the vicinity of the end of the puncture opening into the body cavity but spaced from the end of the puncture by said prescribed small amount to insure that the projecting end of the sealing material is not projecting into the body cavity.
- 3. The system of claim 2 further including:
- interconnect means for selectively interconnecting said plunger means and said control member to selectively fix the plunger means with respect to said control member so as to positively locate said plunger means with respect to said expandable member and that end of the puncture opening into the body cavity to insure that the indicator means is maintained in alignment with the positioning indicia as said sheath member is moved to said withdrawn position and to insure that the sealing material is maintained in position in the puncture.
- 4. A system for depositing a sealing material in the puncture made through the skin and body tissue of a patient into a body cavity to gain access thereto, said system comprising:
- a temporary sealing assembly including:
- an elongate control member having a length greater than the length of the puncture to be sealed and a cross-sectional size smaller than that of the puncture so that said control member passes freely through the puncture, and
- an expandable member fixedly mounted on said control member at a first prescribed location axially of said control member so that a portion of said control member extends exteriorly of the patient when said expandable member is located within the body cavity, said expandable member having a collapsed condition smaller than that of the puncture for passage of said collapsed expandable member through the puncture into the body cavity and an expanded condition larger than that of the puncture to prevent passage of said expanded expandable member through the puncture so that said control member can be used to pull said expandable member in the body cavity up against that end of the puncture opening into the body cavity to locate said expanded expandable member at the end of the puncture; and
- an applicator including:
- an introducer member defining a material receiving chamber therein and an projecting end thereon, said material receiving chamber opening onto the projecting end of said introducer member,
- plunger means slidably mounted in said material receiving chamber and over which said introducer member is movable between an initial position in which the sealing material is housed within said material receiving chamber and a withdrawn position in which said introducer member is withdrawn from around the sealing material while said sealing material is held in position by said plunger means, said plunger means defining a central passage therethrough sized to slidably receive said control member therethrough so that said expandable member can be collapsed and withdrawn through said sealing material and said plunger means after the puncture is sealed, and
- interconnect means for positively connecting said plunger means to said control member so as to selectively fix said plunger means axially of said control member so that the position of the sealing material relative to a inflated balloon and also that end of the puncture opening into the body cavity is maintained fixed as said introducer member is withdrawn from around said sealing material.
- 5. The system of claim 4 wherein said central passage through said plunger means is sized to just clear said control member so that substantially all of the sealing material will be removed from said control member and said collapsed expandable member passing through the sealing material by said plunger.
