Claims
- 1. A coil assembly including a bobbin of insulating material for supporting an electrical coil wound thereon comprising:
- a drum-like coil support portion comprising part of said bobbin, said support portion having side flanges and surrounding a winding axis, said flanges extending radially outward relative to said axis,
- one of said flanges comprising an outboard terminal housing having walls projecting outward beyond the flange's rim and a slot located in the flange's rim at a position which leads into the first layer of the wound electrical coil on said support portion said slot having a bottom in said flange and an outwardly extending side which is continuously curved into an end all which is perpendicular to said flange, said terminal housing having spaced apart inner walls which are downwardly sloped toward each other to define an inwardly extending terminal-receiving cavity,
- a wire having a section constituting the initial portion of said first layer of the wound coil disposed in said cavity and coiled about said support portion, the sloped walls of said cavity disposing said initial portion of said wire in a substantial circumferential direction about said axis and said initial portion of said wire being an excursion beyond said flange in a manner corresponding generally to a turn of coiling around said support portion, and
- a pressure-applying terminal, accommodated by said cavity in coupling relationship to said wire.
- 2. A coil assembly as in claim 1 wherein said pressure-applying terminal has a bifurcated portion in straddling relationship to said wire and said cavity has a bottom portion with a pin-like element located at its central regions, said pressure-applying terminal frictionally engaging said wire and contacting said raised element so as to provide electrical connection between said wire and said terminal.
- 3. A coil assembly as in claim 1 wherein said bobbin has two additional outboard terminal housings in its flanges each having walls projecting outward beyond the flange's rim and having spaced apart inner walls which are downwardly sloped toward each other to define a cavity, said additional terminals comprising a second terminal connected to an excursion of an intermediate section of the coiled wire outboard of said flange and a third terminal connected to the finish of the coiled wire.
- 4. A coil assembly as in claim 1 wherein said slot of said outboard terminal housing adjoins a start chamber having said end wall which curves down toward the flange.
- 5. A coil assembly as in claim 3 wherein said outboard terminal having said slot engaging the start of said first layer of coiled wire and said third outboard terminal engaging the finish of the coiled wire are both located on one of said flanges, and said second outboard terminal engaging said intermediate section of said coiled wire being located on the other flange.
