Claims
- 1. A body armor vest suitable for unobtrusive wear over a shirt having a collar, sleeves and front, back and side outside surfaces, said vest comprising:
- a unitary carrier member including an outer layer with integrally formed front, rear and side portions having outer and inner surfaces; said outer surfaces being dimensioned, configured and adapted to simulate the outside surfaces of the shirt, and said outer layer being continuous and unbroken except for a lower edge, first and second arm openings through which the sleeves can be extended, a neck opening through which the collar can be extended, and a side opening between said first arm opening and said lower edge; means releasably closing said side opening; a front inner layer secured to said inner surface of said outer layer front portion to define a front pocket with a front pocket opening; means releasably closing said front pocket opening; a rear inner layer secured to said inner surface of said outer layer rear portion to define a rear pocket with a rear pocket opening; and means releasably closing said rear pocket opening;
- a first flexible ballistic panel removably received within said front pocket in wraparound front torso protecting position therein; and
- a second flexible ballistic panel removably received within said rear pocket in wraparound rear torso protecting position therein.
- 2. A vest as in claim 1, wherein said front inner layer comprises first upper and lower portions partially overlapping along a first horizontal closure line forming said front pocket opening; said means releasably closing said front pocket opening comprises first complementary hook and pile elements respectively affixed to said first upper and lower portions at said first closure line; and said rear inner layer comprises second upper and lower portions partially overlapping along a second horizontal closure line forming said second pocket opening; and said means releasably closing said rear pocket opening comprises second complementary hook and pile elements respectively affixed to said second upper and lower portions at said second closure line.
- 3. A vest as in claim 2, wherein said means releasably closing said side opening comprises an extension attached to said first layer and laterally-extending across said side opening; and third complementary hook and pile elements respectively affixed to said first layer and said extension at positions proximate said side opening.
- 4. A vest as in claim 3, wherein one of said first and second flexible ballistic panels has a laterally-extending portion; and at least one of said first and second lower portions is secured to said inner surface of said side portion opposite said side opening to accommodate said ballistic panel laterally-extending portion.
- 5. A vest as in claim 3, wherein both of said first and second flexible ballistic panels have first laterally-extending portions; said first and second lower portions comprise a common portion secured to said inner surface of said side portion opposite said side opening; and said first laterally-extending portions of said ballistic panels are received in overlapping positions in parts of said first and second pockets formed by said common portion.
- 6. A vest as in claim 5, wherein both of said first and second flexible ballistic panels have second laterally-extending portions; one of said first and second lower portions includes a piece attached to said extension; one of said second laterally-extending portions is received with a part of one of said first and second pockets formed by said piece; and said other of said second laterally-extending portion is received within said other of said first and second pocket in overlapping position with said first laterally-extending portion.
- 7. A vest as in claim 6, wherein said neck opening comprises a V-shaped yoke opening.
- 8. A vest as in claim 1, wherein said vest further comprises means located on said outer surface of said front portion extending between said neck opening and said lower edge for simulating a fly front opening of the shirt, said fly front opening simulating means comprises a permanently closed buttoned placket closure having opposite vertical free edges, said placket free edges being stitched down to said front portion outer surface to prevent them from being grabbed.
- 9. A vest as in claim 8, wherein said vest further comprises means located on said outer surface of said front portion for simulating breast pockets of the shirt, said breast pocket simulating means further comprises flap closure including free edges, said flap closure free edges being stitched down to said front portion outer surface to prevent them from being grabbed.
- 10. A vest as in claim 9, wherein said vest further comprises means located on said outer surfaces for simulating epaulets of the shirt, said simulated epaulets including epaulet free edges, said epaulet free edges being stitched down to said front portion outer surface to prevent them from being grabbed.
- 11. A vest as in claim 1, wherein said vest further comprises an intermediate layer secured to said inner surface of said front portion outer layer to define a central pocket within said front pocket, and a trauma plate removably received in vital organ protecting position within said central pocket.
- 12. A vest as in claim 1, wherein said outer surface of said front portion further includes aperture means for attaching identifying insignia thereto.
