Claims
- 1. An improvement in a process for controlling emissions which conserves water usage and reduces waste water discharge, the process including burning fuel with air to produce heat and utilizes water as a heat transfer medium, the process resulting in the production of waste water and combustion gases containing NO.sub.x, and introducing an aqueous solution of NO.sub.x -reducing agent into the combustion gases under conditions effective to reduce the NO.sub.x concentration thereof, the improvement comprising:
- recovering the waste water at the site of combustion;
- mixing a NO.sub.x -reducing agent with the waste water and a hardness-suppressing composition in sufficient quantities to provide an aqueous solution of the NO.sub.x -reducing agent effective for reducing the NO.sub.x concentration of the combustion gases while moderating the tendency for precipitation of hardness factors;
- wherein the aqueous solution of NO.sub.x -reducing agent is prepared by admixing said waste water, an effective NH-containing composition, and a hardness-suppressing composition comprising at least one member selected from the group consisting of water-soluble or water-dispersible polymers, phosphonates, chelants, phosphates and mixtures thereof, of a composition and in an amount effective to moderate the tendency for precipitation of hardness factors comprising at least calcium; and
- wherein the NO.sub.x -reducing agent comprises an NH-containing composition comprising a member selected from the group consisting of ammonia, urea, urea hydrolysis products, carbamates, ammonium carbonate, ammonium bicarbonate, cyanurates, ammonium salts, and mixtures of two or more of these;
- following mixing of the NO.sub.x -reducing agent with the waste water and a hardness-suppressing composition, contacting the combustion gases with the aqueous solution of NO.sub.x -reducing agent under conditions effective to achieve selective gas phase reaction of the NO.sub.x -reducing agent with the NO.sub.x.
- 2. An improved process according to claim 1 wherein the aqueous solution of NO.sub.x -reducing agent is prepared by diluting a concentrate comprising from 15 to 60% of NO.sub.x -reducing agent and from 0.05 to 1.0% of the hardness-suppressing composition.
- 3. An improved process according to claim 2 wherein the NO.sub.x -reducing agent comprises urea or at least one of its hydrolysis products or a salt thereof.
- 4. An improved process according to claim 3 wherein the aqueous solution comprises both a water-soluble polymer and a phosphonic acid or salt of a phosphonic acid as hardness-suppressing compositions.
- 5. An improvement in a process for producing and utilizing steam while controlling emissions, the process comprising burning fuel with air to produce hot combustion gases containing NO.sub.x, transferring heat from the combustion gases to water to produce steam, passing the steam to a device which utilizes at least a portion of the energy of the steam and produces spent steam, cooling the spent steam by indirect heat transfer with cooling water, cooling the cooling water by direct contact with air causing evaporation, and introducing an aqueous solution of NO.sub.x -reducing agent into the combustion gases under conditions effective to reduce the NO.sub.x concentration thereof by selective gas phase reaction, the improvement comprising;
- following cooling of the cooling water, separating a portion of the cooling water from the remainder and mixing it with a NO.sub.x -reducing agent in sufficient quantity to provide an aqueous solution of the NO.sub.x -reducing agent effective for reducing the NO.sub.x concentration of the combustion gases;
- wherein the NO.sub.x -reducing agent comprises an NH-containing composition comprising a member selected from the group consisting of ammonia, urea, urea hydrolysis products, carbamates, ammonium carbonate, ammonium bicarbonate, cyanurates, ammonium salts, and mixtures thereof.
- 6. A process according to claim 5 wherein, following cooling of the cooling water, a portion of the cooling water is separated from the rest, treated by the addition of a hardness suppressing composition to reduce hardness of that portion and recombined with the remainder of the cooling water.
- 7. A process according to claim 6 wherein the portion of the cooling water which is treated is mixed with an additive to reduce the hardness of that portion.
- 8. A process according to claim 6 wherein the portion of cooling water which is treated is subjected to a process selected from the group consisting of reverse osmosis, electrodialysis reversal, other bipolar membrane technology and vapor recompression.
- 9. A process according to claim 5 wherein the aqueous solution of NO.sub.x -reducing agent is prepared by admixing cooling water after it has been cooled, an NH-containing composition, and a hardness-suppressing composition comprising at least one member selected from the group consisting of water-soluble or water-dispersible polymers, phosphonates, chelants, phosphates and mixtures thereof, in an amount effective to moderate the tendency for precipitation of hardness factors comprising at least calcium.
- 10. A process according to claim 9 wherein the concentration of the hardness-suppressing composition is sufficient to enable protection against calcium scale formation at calcium concentrations of from 400 to 2500 parts per million.
- 11. A process according to claim 9 wherein the pH of the aqueous solution is at least 7.
- 12. An improved process according to claim 9 wherein the aqueous solution of NO.sub.x -reducing agent is prepared by diluting a concentrate comprising from 15 to 60% of the NO.sub.x -reducing agent and from 0.05 to 1.0% of the hardness-suppressing composition.
- 13. An improved process according to claim 9 wherein the NO.sub.x -reducing agent comprises urea or at least one of its hydrolysis products or a salt of a urea hydrolysis product.
- 14. An improved process according to claim 9 wherein the aqueous solution comprises both a water-soluble polymer and a phosphonic acid or salt of a phosphonic acid as hardness-suppressing compositions.
- 15. An improvement in a process for driving a turbine wherein fuel is burned with air to produce hot combustion gases containing NO.sub.x ; heat is transferred from the combustion gases to water to produce steam; steam is passed to a turbine to produce mechanical energy; steam from the turbine is cooled by indirect heat transfer with cooling water; the cooling water is cooled by direct contact with air causing evaporation; and an aqueous solution of NO.sub.x -reducing agent is introduced into the combustion gases under conditions effective to reduce the NO.sub.x concentration thereof, the improvement comprising:
- following cooling the cooling water by contact with air, treating a portion of the cooling water to reduce the hardness of that portion, combining the resulting treated water and make-up with the remainder of the cooling water to maintain total hardness within the range of 400 to 2500 ppm, silicate hardness at from 50 to 250 ppm and a ratio of calcium to magnesium at greater than 2:1; and, then
- separating a portion of the cooling water from the remainder and mixing it with NO.sub.x -reducing agent in sufficient quantity to provide an aqueous solution of the NO.sub.x concentration of the combustion gases;
- wherein the aqueous solution of NO.sub.x -reducing agent is prepared by admixing said waste water, an effective NH-containing composition, and a hardness-suppressing composition comprising at least one member selected from the group consisting of water soluble or water dispersible polymers, phosphonates, chelants, phosphates and mixtures thereof in an amount effective to moderate the tendency for precipitation of hardness factors comprising calcium, magnesium and silicate; and
- wherein the NO.sub.x -reducing agent comprises an NH-containing composition comprising a member selected from the group consisting of ammonia, urea, urea hydrolysis products, carbamates, ammonium carbonate, ammonium bicarbonate, cyanurates, ammonium salts, and mixtures thereof.
- 16. A process according to claim 15 wherein the portion of the cooling water which is treated is contacted with an additive to reduce the hardness of that portion.
- 17. A process according to claim 15 wherein the portion of cooling which is treated is subjected to reverse osmosis.
- 18. An improved process according to claim 15 wherein the aqueous solution of NO.sub.x -reducing agent is prepared by diluting a concentrate comprising from 15 to 60% of NO.sub.x -reducing agent and from 0.05 to 1.0% of the hardness-suppressing composition.
- 19. An improvement in a process for producing and utilizing steam while controlling emissions, the process comprising burning fuel with air to produce hot combustion gases containing NO.sub.x, transferring heat from the combustion gases to boiler water to produce steam, passing the steam to a device which utilizes at least a portion of the energy of the steam and produces spent steam, cooling the spent steam by indirect heat transfer to produce liquid boiler water, and introducing an aqueous solution of NO.sub.x -reducing agent into the combustion gases under conditions effective to reduce the NO.sub.x concentration thereof, the improvement comprising:
- separating a portion of the boiler water from the remainder and mixing it with NO.sub.x -reducing agent in sufficient quantity to provide an aqueous solution of the NO.sub.x -reducing agent effective for reducing the NO.sub.x concentration of the combustion gases;
- wherein the NO.sub.x -reducing agent comprises an NH-containing composition comprising a member selected from the group consisting of ammonia, urea, urea hydrolysis products, carbamates, ammonium carbonate, ammonium bicarbonate, cyanurates, ammonium salts, and mixtures thereof.
- 20. A process according to claim 19 wherein the aqueous solution of NO.sub.x -reducing agent is prepared by admixing said boiler water, an effective NH-containing composition, and a hardness-suppressing composition comprising at least one member selected from the group consisting of water-soluble and water-dispersible polymers, phosphonates, chelants, phosphates and mixtures thereof in an amount effective to moderate the tendency for precipitation of hardness factors comprising calcium, magnesium, and silicate.
- 21. An improved process according to claim 19 wherein the aqueous solution of NO.sub.x -reducing agent is prepared by diluting a concentrate comprising from 15 to 60% of NO.sub.x -reducing agent and from 0.05 to 1.0% of the hardness-suppressing composition.

No. 07/919,281 filed on Jul. 24, 1992 now abandoned, which is a continuation-in-part of commonly assigned U.S. Patent Application entitled "Hardness Suppression In Urea Solutions", filed Oct. 3, 1991, in the names of L. Dubin, W. R. Epperly, B. N. Sprague, and T. von Harpe, having Ser. No. 07/770,857, now U.S. Pat. No. 5,441,713, which in turn is a continuation-in-part of commonly assigned U.S. Patent Application entitled "Composition for Introduction Into a High Temperature Environment" having Ser. No. 07/576,424, filed Nov. 27, 1990, now abandoned, in the names of W. R. Epperly, B. N. Sprague, and T. von Harpe, which in turn is a continuation-in-part of U.S. patent application Ser. No. 07/187,943, filed on Apr. 29, 1988, (now abandoned) also in the names of Epperly, Sprague, and von Harpe, the disclosures of which are incorporated herein by reference.
