- each transverse rib having opposite faces in the top portion and opposite faces in the bottom portion with a vertical plane passing between the opposite faces of the transverse rib from the top wall to the bottom wall of the bolster and passing through the full width of the transverse rib.
- 2. The bolster of claim 1 further including a second longitudinal rib extending across the central transverse plane of the bolster and connected to the top wall, bottom wall and both transverse ribs, the two longitudinal ribs being spaced from each other, each longitudinal rib being on one side of said central longitudinal plane, and each transverse rib extending across the central longitudinal plane of the bolster.
- 3. The bolster of claim 2 wherein said longitudinal ribs extend longitudinally along a majority of the length of the bolster.
- 4. The bolster of claim 3 wherein said longitudinal ribs are connected to said bottom wall of said bolster along substantially their entire lengths.
- 5. The bolster of claim 4 wherein each of said longitudinal ribs includes a plurality of openings.
- 6. The bolster of claim 2 wherein said bolster defines substantially open spaces between said top and bottom walls, between said longitudinal ribs and between said transverse ribs, each of said substantially open spaces being adjacent to one transverse rib and two longitudinal ribs and between the adjacent transverse rib and the central transverse plane of the bolster.
- 7. The bolster of claim 6 wherein said transverse ribs are free from connection to any horizontal member, said longitudinal ribs extend longitudinally along a majority of the length of the bolster, and said transverse ribs have vertical planes of symmetry.
- 8. The bolster of claim 1 wherein both of the transverse ribs have vertical planes of symmetry.
- 9. The bolster of claim 1 wherein said transverse ribs are free from connection to any horizontal member.
- 10. In a bolster for use with a railway wheel truck of the type having a pair of sideframes supported on wheeled axles, the bolster to extend between the sideframes and comprising:
- two ends;
- a top wall having an interior and an exterior side;
- a pair of sidewalls extending down from the top wall to a bottom edge, the sidewalls having interior and exterior sides;
- a bottom wall extending from the bottom edges of the sidewalls, the bottom wall having an interior and an exterior side, a central portion, two end portions and two converging portions between the center portion and two end portions; and
- a center plate at the center of the bolster, the distance between the top and bottom walls being greatest at the center plate and central portion of the bottom wall and least at the two end portions of the bottom wall, the converging portions of the bottom wall converging toward the top wall between the central portion and the two end portions of the bottom wall;
- the bolster having a central vertical longitudinal plane between the sidewalls and a central vertical transverse plane between the two ends and perpendicular to the central longitudinal plane;
- the bolster having a top portion extending down from the top wall and a bottom portion extending up from the bottom wall;
- the bolster further comprising a pair of spaced longitudinal ribs connecting the top and bottom walls and extending across the central transverse plane of the bolster, each longitudinal rib being on one side of the central longitudinal plane, each longitudinal rib extending along at least substantial parts of the central and converging portions of the bottom wall of the bolster; and
- a pair of spaced transverse ribs, each transverse rib connecting the top wall and the bottom wall and connecting the spaced longitudinal ribs, each transverse rib being on one side of the central transverse plane and extending across the central longitudinal plane of the bolster, each transverse rib being connected to the bottom wall substantially at one juncture of the central portion of the bottom wall and one converging portion;
- each transverse rib having opposite faces in the top portion that do not diverge from a vertical plane in the same direction and opposite faces in the bottom portion that do not diverge from a vertical plane in the same direction.
- 11. The bolster of claim 10 wherein all of the ribs have vertical planes of symmetry.
- 12. The bolster of claim 10 wherein the sidewalls have interior and exterior surfaces and the interior and exterior surfaces of each sidewall in the top portion do not diverge from a vertical plane in the same direction and the interior and exterior surfaces of each sidewall in the bottom portion do not diverge from a vertical plane in the same direction.
- 13. The bolster of claim 10 wherein said transverse ribs are spaced from said sidewalls of said bolster.
- 14. The bolster of claim 10 wherein said transverse ribs are free from connection to any horizontal member between the top and bottom walls.
- 15. The bolster of claim 10 wherein said bolster defines substantially open spaces between said top and bottom walls, between said longitudinal ribs and between said transverse ribs, each of said substantially open spaces being adjacent to one transverse rib and two longitudinal ribs and between the adjacent transverse rib and the central transverse plane of the bolster.
- 16. The bolster of claim 15 wherein said transverse ribs are spaced from said sidewalls of said bolster, free from connection to any horizontal member between the top and bottom walls, and have vertical planes of symmetry.
