Technical Field
This invention relates generally to an upper and lower receiver and more particularly to a bolt action upper and lower receiver for a firearm.
State of the Art
Particular firearms, such as an AR15, utilize a gas-operation system. A gas-operation system is a system of operation used to provide energy to operate auto loading firearms. In gas-operation, a portion of high pressure gas from the cartridge being fired is used to power a mechanism to extract the spent case and chamber a new cartridge. Energy from the gas is harnessed through either a port in the barrel or trap at the muzzle. This high-pressure gas impinges on a surface such as a piston head of a bolt, wherein the bolt and bolt carrier are operatively coupled within an upper receiver to provide motion for unlocking of the action, extraction of the spent case, ejection, cocking of the hammer or striker, chambering of a fresh cartridge, and locking of the action.
Certain states and countries do not allow such weapons to be owned or sold legally within their borders. This limits the ability for someone to own an AR style firearm. Bolt action firearms require manual charging of the weapon prior to each firing. These weapons are generally not considered illegal in the previously discussed states and countries. Accordingly, there is a need for a bolt action upper receiver for a firearm.
The present invention relates to a bolt action upper receiver with a corresponding lower receiver for a firearm.
An embodiment includes a bolt action upper receiver for use with a firearm. The bolt action upper receiver comprises a body portion having an aperture extending from the front end through the back end of the body portion; an opening on a bottom surface of the body portion, wherein the opening provides access to the aperture extending through the body portion. The opening allows for a bolt and bolt carrier to be operatively coupled within the body portion and further the opening allows for a projectile to be loaded within the upper receiver in response to operating a bolt action of the upper receiver. The body portion may be removable coupled to a lower receiver through a two pin connection. The lower receiver may include a recess, wherein the recess receives a protrusion coupled to a receiver end plate. The recess engaged by the receiver endplate protrusion operates to eliminate or reduce turning of the stock. The upper receiver further comprises an attachment device for coupling a stock directly to the upper receiver.
Another embodiment includes a firearm comprising a bolt action upper receiver. The bolt action upper receiver comprises a body portion having an aperture extending from the front end through the back end of the body portion; an opening on a bottom surface of the body portion, wherein the opening provides access to the aperture extending through the body portion. The opening allows for a bolt and bolt carrier to be operatively coupled within the body portion and further the opening allows for a projectile to be loaded within the upper receiver in response to operating a bolt action of the upper receiver. The body portion may be removable coupled to a lower receiver through a two pin connection. The lower receiver may include a recess, wherein the recess receives a protrusion coupled to a receiver end plate. The recess engaged by the receiver endplate protrusion operates to eliminate or reduce turning of the stock. The upper receiver further comprises an attachment device for coupling a stock directly to the upper receiver.

The body portion 12 of the upper receiver 10 may be removably coupled to a lower receiver 42 through a two pin connection. While it is shown that there is a two pin connection for removably coupling the upper receiver 10 to the lower receiver 42, it is contemplated that other connection types may be utilized to couple the upper receiver 10 to the lower receiver 42.
The upper receiver 10 comprises a front mount 27 having an aperture 24 extending there through and a rear mount 28 with an aperture 26 extending there through. The lower receiver 42 includes mounting holes 30 and 32, wherein front mount 27 of the upper receiver aligns its aperture 24 with the mounting holes 30 and allows a securing pin to extend through aligned holes to rotatably secure the upper receiver 10 to the lower receiver 42. The rear protrusion of the upper receiver aligns its aperture 26 with mounting holes 32 and allows a securing pin to extend through the aligned holes to couple the upper receiver 10 to the lower receiver 42. It will be understood that bolt action receiver 10 does not include an aperture for receiving a gas tube. Additionally, the channel or opening 44 extending through the body portion 12 is shallow and does not accept a gas key coupled to a bolt carrier.
The lower receiver 42 may include a recess 52 formed in a rear surface of the lower receiver 42, wherein the recess receives a protrusion coupled to a receiver end plate. The recess 52 engaged by the receiver endplate protrusion operates to eliminate or reduce turning of the stock. The upper receiver 10 further comprises an attachment device for coupling a stock directly to the upper receiver 10. For example, as shown in
In some embodiments, the stock may include a protrusion that corresponds to and engages the recess 52. In these embodiments, there is not a need for an endplate.
The lower receiver 42 comprises a magazine recess for receiving a magazine loaded with ammunition. The upper receiver may load and fire any type of caliber ammunition. Further, lower receiver 42 includes a recess 52, wherein the recess 52 is exposed when the upper receiver 10 is in the opened position rotated about the front pin connection of the upper receiver 10 with the lower receiver 42. The opened position provides opportunity to access the trigger and inner components of the lower receiver 42. Further, in order for a two pin connection between the upper receiver 10 and the lower receiver 42 to function properly, the protrusion of the receiver end plate needs to be able to move out of the recess 52, particularly if only the rear pin of the two pin connection system is removed. The lower receiver 42 comprises an aperture 50, wherein the aperture 50 is threaded for receiving a tension screw. The tension screw operates to adjust the fit between the upper receiver 10 and lower receiver 42, wherein tightening the tension screw pushes against the rear mounting lug of the upper receiver and tightens the fit between the upper receiver 10 and the lower receiver 42. The tension screw is then covered by the grip. In other words, the tension screw provides the ability to adjust the fit of the upper receiver 10 with the lower receiver 42.
The upper receiver 10 further includes a discharge port 40 wherein spent casings are ejected from within the upper receiver 10 in response to a user operating the bolt action of the bolt action upper receiver 10.
Additional embodiment include a firearm 60 with the upper receiver 10 and lower receiver 42 described above coupled thereto. This provides for a bolt action AR-style firearm 60. This bolt action AR-style firearm 60 includes handguards 64, picatinny rail portions and the like for receiving AR-style accessories to provide the look and feel of an assault rifle with a bolt action rifle.
In embodiments, the upper receiver 10 may include slots for receiving a side charger in order the charge the weapon and ready it for firing. It is also contemplated that other charging handles may be utilized.
