Claims
- 1. A bolt comprising:
- a non-round head of predetermined shape,
- a shank,
- a neck integral with the head and shank, and
- a plurality of deformable raised contact surface portions uniformly positioned adjacent the neck and constructed and configured for spreading an applied bolt load.
- 2. The bolt of claim 1 wherein the raised contact surface portions further comprise:
- a base portion contiguous the neck, and
- a ridge portion raised above the base portion and constructed and configured to contact a congruent wall portion of a bolt bore in a support structure.
- 3. The bolt of claim 1 wherein the head shape further comprises:
- a shape selected from the group consisting of elliptical, square, oblong, spherical, or rectangular.
- 4. The bolt of claim 1 wherein the head further comprises:
- an axially extending portion of predetermined thickness having a constant circumference, and
- a tapered neck portion between the head and shank.
- 5. The bolt of claim 1 further comprising:
- the head having a first perimeter,
- the shank having a second perimeter smaller than the first perimeter,
- the neck having a third perimeter intermediate the first and second perimeters.
- 6. The bolt of claim 1 further comprising:
- the head having a first perimeter,
- the shank having a second perimeter smaller than the first perimeter,
- the neck having a third perimeter larger than the first and second perimeters.
- 7. The bolt of claim 1 wherein the neck further comprises:
- a shaped surface having a gradually decreasing perimeter from the head to the shank.
- 8. The bolt of claim 1 wherein the neck further comprises:
- a shaped surface having a uniformly diminishing perimeter from the head to the shank.
- 9. The bolt of claim 8 further comprising:
- a line defining the perimeter of the surface of the neck and through a base of the raised contact surface portions in a plane perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the bolt has a shape which is selected from the group consisting of elliptical, square, rectangular, oblong, or partially arcuate.
- 10. The bolt of claim 8 further comprising:
- the lines defining the perimeter of the surface of the neck in a plane through the longitudinal axis of the bolt have a shape which is selected from the group consisting of tapered, concave or convex relative to the longitudinal axis.
- 11. The bolt of claim 1 wherein each of the raised contact surface portions further comprise:
- an elongated portion raised above a base portion.
- 12. The bolt of claim 11 further comprising:
- each of the elongated raised portion being a V-shaped ridge.
- 13. The bolt of claim 1 further comprising:
- each of the raised contact surface portions being integral with the neck.
- 14. The bolt of claim 1 wherein the plurality of raised contact surface portions further comprise:
- at least a pair of symmetrical inserts separate from the neck, having elongated portions raised above the base portions, and constructed and configured to mate with opposite sides of the neck when a load is applied to the bolt.
- 15. The bolt of claim 14 wherein the inserts further comprise:
- shapes which self-align relative to the neck when a load is applied to the bolt to spread the load onto the raised contact surfaces.
- 16. The bolt of claim 1 wherein the uniform position further comprises:
- the raised portions symmetrically placed relative to the neck.
- 17. The bolt of claim 1 further comprising;
- a plurality of the raised contact surface portions extending substantially an entire length of the neck.
- 18. A bolt comprising:
- a head of predetermined shape,
- a shank,
- a neck integral with the head and shank, and
- a plurality of deformable raised contact surface portions uniformly positioned adjacent the neck and head, extending substantially along an entire length of the neck and head, and constructed and configured for spreading an applied bolt load.
- 19. A bolt comprising:
- a head of predetermined shape,
- a shank,
- a neck integral with the head and shank, and
- a plurality of deformable raised contact surface portions uniformly positioned adjacent the neck, extending substantially along an entire length of the head, and constructed and configured for spreading an applied bolt load.
- 20. The bolt of claim 1 further comprising:
- a plurality of the raised contact surface portions faying to an adjacent bore wall portion when a load is applied to the bolt.
- 21. The bolt of claim 1 further comprising:
- each raised contact surface portion extending axially and radially relative to the longitudinal axis of the bolt whereby a load applied to the bolt is spread more uniformly over a surface of the neck.
- 22. A bolt comprising:
- a head of predetermined shape,
- a shank,
- a neck integral with the head and shank, and
- a plurality of deformable raised contact surface portions uniformly positioned adjacent the head, extending substantially along an axial length of the head, and constructed and configured for spreading an applied bolt load.
- 23. A bolt comprising:
- a head of predetermined shape,
- a shank,
- a neck integral with the head and shank, and
- a plurality of deformable raised contact surface portions uniformly positioned contiguous the head and constructed and configured for spreading an applied bolt load.
- 24. A process of fastening a workpiece comprising the steps of:
- forming a bolt having a head of predetermined shape, a shank, a neck integral with the head and shank, and a plurality of raised contact surface portions uniformly positioned adjacent the neck, and
- deforming the raised contact surface portions of the bolt against the workpiece through which the bolt has been inserted by applying a load to the bolt
- whereby the load is spread over a greater contact surface between the bolt and the workpiece.
- 25. The process of claim 24 wherein the forming step is further comprising the step of:
- forming the elongated potions raised above the base portions on at least a pair of symmetrical inserts separate from the neck.
- 26. The process of claim 25 further comprising the steps of:
- positioning the inserts adjacent the neck, and
- self-aligning the inserts relative to the neck when the load is applied.
- 27. A process of fastening a workpiece comprising the steps of:
- forming a bolt having a head of predetermined shape, a shank, a neck integral with the head and shank, and a plurality of raised contact surface portions uniformly positioned adjacent the neck having a hardness less than the hardness of the workpiece, and
- deforming the raised contact surface portions of the bolt against the walls of a recess opening of the workpiece, through which the bolt has been inserted, by applying a load to the bolt through its shank,
- whereby the load is spread over a greater contact surface between the bolt and the workpiece without imbedding the raised contact surfaces in the workpiece.
- 28. The process of claim 27 wherein the step of fastening a workpiece further comprises the step of:
- fastening a mill liner to a shell.
- 29. The process of claim 27 wherein the forming step further comprises the step of:
- forming the elongated portions raised above the base portions on at least a pair of symmetrical inserts separate from the neck.
- 30. The process of claim 29 further comprising the steps of:
- positioning the inserts adjacent the neck, and
- self-aligning the inserts relative to the neck when the load is applied.
