Claims
- 1. A proton exchange membrane fuel cell assembly, comprising:a plurality of fuel cells stacked upon one another and bonded to one another with bonding material; each of said plurality of fuel cells each including a separator plate, a membrane electrode assembly with a first side and a second side bonded and sealed with bonding material on said first side of said membrane electrode assembly to the separator plate and bonded and sealed with bonding material on said second side of said membrane electrode assembly to a second separator plate; and compliant gasket material disposed on a peripheral edge of said separator plate at one end of said sub-stack assembly.
- 2. The proton exchange membrane fuel cell assembly of claim 1 wherein said bonding material is a thermoplastic polymer.
- 3. The proton exchange membrane fuel cell assembly of claim 2, wherein said thermoplastic material is a polyolefin material.
- 4. The proton exchange membrane fuel cell assembly of claim 2, wherein said thermoplastic material is a polyvinyl fluoride material.
- 5. The proton exchange membrane fuel cell assembly of claim 2, wherein said thermoplastic material is a polyvinylidene fluoride material.
- 6. The proton exchange membrane fuel cell assembly of claim 1 wherein said bonding material is a thermoset polymer.
- 7. The proton exchange membrane fuel cell assembly of claim 6 wherein the thermoset polymer is a phenolic polymer.
- 8. The proton exchange membrane fuel cell assembly of claim 6 wherein the thermoset polymer is an epoxy polymer.
- 9. The proton exchange membrane fuel cell assembly of claim 1 wherein said bonding material is an elastomer.
- 10. The proton exchange membrane fuel cell assembly of claim 9 wherein the elastomer is a silicone polymer.
- 11. The proton exchange membrane fuel cell assembly of claim 1, wherein said compliant gasket material is a neoprene rubber.
- 12. The proton exchange membrane fuel cell assembly of claim 1, wherein said compliant gasket material is a silicone rubber.
- 13. A proton exchange fuel cell assembly, comprising:a first sub-stack assembly, comprising: a plurality of fuel cells stacked upon one another and bonded to one another; each of said plurality of fuel cells each including a separator plate, a membrane electrode assembly with a first side and a second side bonded and sealed on said first side of said membrane electrode assembly to a separator plate and bonded and sealed on said second side of said membrane electrode assembly to a second separator plate; a second sub-stack assembly, comprising: a plurality of fuel cells stacked upon one another and bonded to one another; each of said plurality of fuel cells each including a separator plate, a membrane electrode assembly with a first side and a second side bonded and sealed on said first side of said membrane electrode assembly to a separator plate and bonded and sealed on said second side of said membrane electrode assembly to a second separator plate; compliant gasket material disposed on a peripheral edge of said separator plate at one end of said sub-stack assembly; and said second sub-stack assembly being stacked on said first sub-stack assembly with said complaint gasket of said first sub-stack assembly residing therebetween.
- 14. The proton exchange membrane fuel cell assembly of claim 13 wherein said bonding material is a thermoplastic polymer.
- 15. The proton exchange membrane fuel cell assembly of claim 13 wherein said bonding material is a thermoset polymer.
- 16. The proton exchange membrane fuel cell assembly of claim 15 wherein the thermoset polymer is a phenolic polymer.
- 17. The proton exchange membrane fuel cell assembly of claim 15 wherein the thermoset polymer is an epoxy polymer.
- 18. The proton exchange membrane fuel cell assembly of claim 13 wherein said bonding material is an elastomer.
- 19. The proton exchange membrane fuel cell assembly of claim 18 wherein the elastomer is a silicone polymer.
- 20. The proton exchange membrane fuel cell assembly of claim 13, wherein said thermoplastic material is a polyolefin material.
- 21. The proton exchange membrane fuel cell assembly of claim 13, wherein said thermoplastic material is a polyvinyl fluoride material.
- 22. The proton exchange membrane fuel cell assembly of claim 13, wherein said thermoplastic material is a polyvinylidene fluoride material.
- 23. The proton exchange membrane fuel cell assembly of claim 13, wherein said compliant gasket material is a neoprene rubber.
- 24. The proton exchange membrane fuel cell assembly of claim 13, wherein said compliant gasket material is a silicone rubber.
- 25. A PEM fuel cell assembly, comprising:a proton exchange membrane having a first side and a second side; a cathode catalyst layer disposed on said first side of said proton exchange membrane; an anode catalyst layer disposed on said second side of said proton exchange membrane; an anode porous substrate disposed on a side of said anode catalyst layers not in contact with said proton exchange membrane; a cathode porous substrate disposed on a side of said cathode catalyst layer not in contact with said proton exchange membrane; and a separator plate having a central area and a peripheral area dispersed between the membrane electrode assembly of adjacent cells; bonding and sealing layers of thermoplastic material disposed between said separator plate and said anode and cathode substrates at respective peripheral areas thereof; said layers of thermoplastic material bonding and sealing said anode side of said separator plate and said cathode side of said separator plate relative to the respective sides of the anode and cathode substrates.
- 26. The PEM fuel cell assembly of claim 25, wherein said anode porous substrate is impregnated at its periphery with a thermoplastic polymer; and said cathode porous substrate is impregnated at its periphery with a thermoplastic polymer.
- 27. The proton exchange membrane fuel cell assembly of claim 25, wherein said thermoplastic material is a polyolefin material.
- 28. The proton exchange membrane fuel cell assembly of claim 25, wherein said thermoplastic material is a polyvinyl fluoride material.
- 29. The proton exchange membrane fuel cell assembly of claim 25, wherein said thermoplastic material is a polyvinylidene fluoride material.
- 30. The proton exchange membrane fuel cell assembly of claim 25, further comprising:a bonding and sealing layer of foam tape disposed between said anode substrate and said anode side of the separator plate at respective peripheral areas thereof; said layer of foam tape bonding and sealing said anode substrate and said anode side of said plate relative to one another.
- 31. The proton exchange membrane fuel cell assembly of claim 25, further comprising:a bonding and sealing layer of thermoplastic material disposed between said anode substrate and said proton exchange membrane at respective peripheral areas thereof; said layer of thermoplastic material bonding and sealing said anode substrate and said proton exchange membrane relative to one another.
- 32. The proton exchange membrane fuel cell assembly of claim 25, further comprising:a sealing layer of foam tape disposed between said cathode side of said separator plate and said cathode substrate at respective peripheral areas thereof; said layer of foam tape bonding and sealing said cathode side of said separator plate and said cathode substrate relative to one another.
- 33. The proton exchange membrane fuel cell assembly of claim 25, further comprising:a sealing layer of neoprene tape disposed between said anode substrate and said anode side of said separator plate at respective peripheral areas thereof; said layer of neoprene tape sealing said anode substrate and said anode side of the separator plate relative to one another.
- 34. The proton exchange membrane fuel cell assembly of claim 25, further comprising:a sealing layer of silicone tape disposed between said anode substrate and said anode side of said separator plate at respective peripheral areas thereof; said layer of silicone tape sealing said anode substrate and said anode side of the separator plate relative to one another.
- 35. The proton exchange membrane fuel cell assembly of claim 25, further comprising:a bonding and sealing layer of neoprene tape disposed between said cathode side of said bi-polar plate and said cathode substrate at respective peripheral areas thereof; said layer of neoprene tape bonding and sealing said cathode side of said bi-polar plate and said cathode substrate relative to one another.
- 36. The proton exchange membrane fuel cell assembly of claim 25, further comprising:a bonding and sealing layer of silicone tape disposed between said cathode side of said separator plate and said cathode substrate at respective peripheral areas thereof; said layer of silicone tape sealing said cathode side of said bi-polar plate and said cathode substrate relative to one another.

The U.S. Government has a paid-up license in this invention and the right in limited circumstances to require the patent owner to license others on reasonable terms as provided for by the terms of Contract No. DAAB07-97-C-6006.
