Claims
- 1. A densitometer comprising:
- (a) an opposed radiation source and detector;
- (b) a positioner supporting the radiation source and detector at a predetermined angle about a patient to obtain a two dimensional array of pixels having values representing the attenuation of radiation at locations through the patient corresponding to the locations of the pixels within the two dimensional array;
- (c) a digital computer having a display screen and a cursor controller providing a select signal and cursor coordinates in response to operator commands, the digital computer receiving the array of pixels and operating according to a stored program to:
- (1) categorize the pixels into at least three categories including categories of bone pixels, soft tissue pixels and neutral pixels;
- (2) display an image of the pixels in which the at least three categories are visually distinguishable;
- (3) respond to cursor coordinates from the cursor controller to move a location of a cursor symbol in a path on the image;
- (4) change the category of indicated pixels in at least one of the categories for indicated pixels in the path when the select signal is received; and
- (5) display a value to the operator based on the bone pixels and soft tissue pixels but excluding the neutral pixels, after step (4).
- 2. The densitometer of claim 1 wherein the stored program distinguishes pixels of at least one category in the image by color.
- 3. The densitometer of claim 1 wherein the at least three categories are selected from among the group consisting of: air and artifact.
- 4. The densitometer of claim 1 wherein the cursor controller additionally provides a cursor format signal in response to operator commands that controls the size of the cursor symbol with respect to the pixels of the image.
- 5. The densitometer of claim 1 wherein bone integrity value is bone density and wherein step (5) includes the steps of:
- (i) summing the values of all the pixels in the bone pixel category after step (4) to produce a total bone content value;
- (ii) dividing the total bone content value by the number of pixels in the bone pixel category after step (4).
- 6. The densitometer of claim 1 wherein the cursor controller additionally provides a category signal in response to operator commands that controls the category into which the indicated pixels are changed when the select signal is received.
- 7. A method of analyzing bone in vivo comprising the steps of:
- (a) scanning the body with a beam of radiation to acquire a matrix of discrete data elements each having a value wherein each said data element corresponds to a defined location in the body, and wherein the value of each data element is related to a physical characteristic of the material through which the beam of radiation passes;
- (b) employing a digital computer to:
- (1) sort the data elements based on their values into bone data categories indicating the physical characteristic of the vertebrae;
- (2) resort the sorted data elements into the bone data categories indicating the physical characteristic of the vertebrae based on their values determined in step (1) and based on their defined locations;
- (3) recategorize the data elements into the bone data categories indicating the physical characteristic of the vertebrae based on operator review of a display of the resorting of step (2) and a display of the data elements indicating their values and defined locations.
- 8. The method of claim 7 wherein the value of each data element is displayed in step (3) in the form of a brightness of a displayed point at a displayed location corresponding to the defined location of the data element and wherein the resorting of step (2) of the data element is indicated by a color of the displayed point.
