Claims
- 1. A bone fixation apparatus, comprising:
a receiver cup comprising at least one receiver engagement portion; and a cap comprising at least one cap engagement portion that slidably engages the at least one receiver engagement portion when rotated on the receiver cup less than one full rotation.
- 2. The bone fixation apparatus of claim 1, further comprising:
a bone fastener having a head and a body, the head captured in the receiver cup and the body extending through the receiver cup; and a support rod having a portion extending into the receiver cup through at least one cutout in the receiver cup.
- 3. The bone fixation apparatus of claim 2, further comprising:
a compression member coupled to the cap and configured to fix the position of the support rod relative to the receiver cup.
- 4. The bone fixation apparatus of claim 2, further comprising a saddle interposed between the support rod and the head of the bone fastener.
- 5. The bone fixation apparatus of claim 2, wherein the bone fastener comprises a threaded fastener.
- 6. The bone fixation apparatus of claim 2, wherein the bone fastener comprises a pedicle screw.
- 7. The bone fixation apparatus of claim 1, wherein the at least one receiver engagement portion comprises two receiver flanges.
- 8. The bone fixation apparatus of claim 1, wherein the least one receiver engagement portion includes a stop.
- 9. The bone fixation apparatus of claim 8, wherein the stop comprises a recess in the at least one receiver engagement portion.
- 10. The bone fixation apparatus of claim 1, wherein a first engagement portion of the at least one receiver engagement portion comprises a flange having a recessed stop.
- 11. The bone fixation apparatus of claim 1, wherein the at least one receiver engagement portion surrounds approximately one half of a perimeter of the receiver cup.
- 12. The bone fixation apparatus of claim 10, wherein the cap comprises a stop engagement element.
- 13. The bone fixation apparatus of claim 12, wherein the cap comprises multiple stop engagement elements, each associated with one of the at least one cap engagement portion.
- 14. The bone fixation apparatus of claim 1, wherein each of the at least one cap engagement portion corresponds to one of the at least one receiver engagement portion.
- 15. The bone fixation apparatus of claim 1, wherein:
each of the at least one receiver engagement portion comprises a flange having a stop; and the cap comprises multiple stop engagement elements, configured to engage the stop on each of the at least one receiver engagement portion.
- 16. The bone fixation apparatus of claim 1, wherein the at least one cap engagement portion slidably engages the at least one receiver engagement portion when rotated on the receiver cup less than one half turn.
- 17. The bone fixation apparatus of claim 1, wherein the at least one cap engagement portion slidably engages the at least one receiver engagement portion when rotated on the receiver cup less than one quarter turn.
- 18. The bone fixation apparatus of claim 1, wherein the at least one cap engagement portion comprises:
a first flange positioned partially around an opening of the cap; and a second flange positioned partially around the opening of the cap and substantially opposite the first flange.
- 19. The bone fixation apparatus of claim 1, wherein the at least one cap engagement portion comprises multiple flanges uniformly spaced around an opening of the cap.
- 20. A bone fixation apparatus, comprising:
a receiver cup having at least one cutout and multiple receiver flanges positioned around an upper surface of the receiver cup; a pedicle screw having a head and a body, the head captured in the receiver cup and the body extending through an opening in the receiver cup; a saddle positioned in the receiver cup over the head of the pedicle screw; a support rod having a portion positioned in the receiver cup; a cap having a threaded hole and multiple cap flanges that engage the receiver flanges by rotating the cap on top of the receiver cup approximately one quarter turn; and a compression member threaded into the threaded hole of the cap and configured to apply a force to the support rod, thereby fixing the position of the support rod relative to the receiver cup.
- 21. A bone fixation apparatus, comprising a receiver cup having receiver engagement portions slidably coupled to a cap having complementary cap engagement portions, the cap slidably coupled to the receiver cup when the cap is rotated on the receiver cup less than one half turn.
- 22. The bone fixation apparatus of claim 21, further comprising:
a fastener at least partially captured in the receiver cup; and a compression member configured to fix the position of the receiver cup relative to the fastener.
- 23. A bone fixation apparatus, comprising:
a receiver cup comprising means for engaging a cap; and the cap comprising means for engaging the receiver cup when the cap is rotated on the receiver cup less than one turn.
- 24. The bone fixation apparatus of claim 23, further comprising a means for fastening to a bone having at least a portion captured within the receiver cup.
- 25. A method for stabilizing bones; the method comprising:
assembling a compression member to a cap away from a surgical field; capturing a head of a bone fastener in a receiver cup; inserting the bone fastener into a bone in the surgical field; and coupling the cap to the receiver cup in the surgical field by rotating the cap less than one full rotation relative to the receiver cup.
- 26. The method of claim 25, further comprising:
prior to coupling the cap to the receiver cup, capturing a portion of a support rod in the receiver cup; and after coupling the cap to the receiver cup, compressing the portion of the support rod within the receiver cup using the compression member.
- 27. The method of claim 26, wherein compressing the portion of the support rod comprises threading the compression member further into the cap.
