Claims
- 1. A method for preventing fastener backout from a bone plate having a through hole, the method comprising the steps of:
disposing an annular member in the through hole of the bone plate; disposing a fastener having a head and a shaft through the annular member; threadably coupling the shaft of the fastener into a bone; and after the shaft is threadably coupled to the bone, expanding the head of the fastener against the annular member to resist motion of the head therein.
- 2. The method of claim 1, further comprising:
after the shaft is threadably coupled to the bone, expanding the annular member against the through hole to resist motion of the annular member therein.
- 3. The method of claim 2, wherein a surface of the through hole and an outer surface of the annular member are patterned so that when the annular member is expanded against the through hole with the outer surface of the annular member abutting the surface of the through hole, motion of the annular member is resisted.
- 4. The method of claim 2, wherein at least one of (1) a surface of the through hole and (2) an outer surface of the annular member are patterned, so that when the annular member is expanded against the through hole with the outer surface of the annular member abutting the surface of the through hole, motion of the annular member is resisted.
- 5. The method of claim 1, further comprising:
rotating the annular member within the through hole to a surgeon-selected orientation relative to the bone plate.
- 6. The method of claim 1, further comprising:
disposing a locking screw in the head of the fastener, wherein the head is expanded by the locking screw.
- 7. The method of claim 1, wherein the inserting step comprises locating the bone plate adjacent to bone and inserting the fastener in situ.
- 8. The method of claim 1, further comprising:
disposing the head of the fastener against an inner shoulder of the annular member while the shaft extends beyond the through hole.
- 9. A method for preventing fastener backout from a bone plate having a through hole, the method comprising the steps of:
disposing an annular member with inner and outer surfaces in the through hole of the bone plate; inserting a fastener having a head and a shaft through the annular member with the head proximate the inner surface of the annular member and the shaft extending beyond the through hole; and expanding the head of the fastener against the inner surface of the annular member to resist motion of the head therein, while expanding the annular member against the through hole to resist motion of the annular member therein.
- 10. The method of claim 9, further comprising:
disposing a locking screw in the head of the fastener, wherein the head is expanded by the locking screw.
- 11. The method of claim 9, wherein the inserting step comprises locating the bone plate adjacent to a bone and threading the shaft of the fastener into the bone.
- 12. The method of claim 9, wherein the outer surface of the annular member is patterned so that when the outer surface of the annular member abuts the through hole, motion of the annular member is resisted.
- 13. The method of claim 9, wherein the through hole is patterned so that when the outer surface of the annular member abuts the through hole, motion of the annular member is resisted.
- 14. The method of claim 9, further comprising:
threadably coupling the shaft of the fastener into a bone.
- 15. A method for interlocking a fastener having a head and shaft to a through hole in a bone plate, the method comprising the steps of:
disposing an annular member with an inner shoulder in the through hole of the bone plate; inserting the fastener through the annular member with the head abutting the inner shoulder of the annular member and the shaft extending beyond the through hole; and expanding the head of the fastener against the annular member to resist motion of the head therein, while expanding the annular member against the through hole to resist motion of the annular member therein.
- 16. The method of claim 15, further comprising:
threadably coupling a locking screw to the head of the fastener.
- 17. The method of claim 15, further comprising:
threadably coupling the shaft of the fastener into a bone.
- 18. The method of claim 15, further comprising:
orienting the annular member within the through hole to a surgeon-selected angle relative to the bone plate.
- 19. The method of claim 15, further comprising:
releasably locking an outer surface of the annular member to a ridged inner surface of the through hole.
- 20. The method of claim 15, further comprising:
releasably locking a ridged outer surface of the annular member to an inner surface of the through hole.
