Claims
- 1. A method to stimulate the differentiation of bone marrow which method comprises contacting said bone marrow with a compound of the formula ##STR5## or the ester, amide, mixed ester/amide or salt forms thereof, wherein YCO is .gamma.-glu or .beta.-asp;
- G* is phenylglycine or glycine;
- Z is CH.sub.2, O or S; and
- X is a hydrocarbon radical of optionally substituted on any aromatic moiety contained therein selected from the group consisting of hexyl, heptyl, octyl, benzyl and naphthyl;
- in an amount and for a time effective to stimulate the differentiation of said bone marrow.
- 2. The method of claim 1 wherein Z is S.
- 3. The method of claim 1 wherein X is hexyl, heptyl, octyl, benzyl or naphthyl.
- 4. The method of claim 1 wherein X is benzyl or octyl.
- 5. The method of claim 1 wherein the compound of Formula 1 is in the diester form.
- 6. The method of claim 1 wherein the compound of Formula 1 is the diethyl ester of .gamma.-glutamyl S-benzyl cysteinyl glycine, of .gamma.-glutamyl S-octyl cysteinyl glycine, of .gamma.-glutamyl S-benzyl cysteinyl phenylglycine, or of .gamma.-glutamyl S-octyl cysteinyl phenylglycine.
- 7. The method of claim 1 wherein the compound of Formula 1 is the diethyl ester of .gamma.-glutamyl S-benzyl cysteinyl phenylglycine or .gamma.-glutamyl S-octyl cysteinyl glycine.
- 8. The method of claim 1 wherein said contacting is effected by administering said compound of Formula 1 or pharmaceutical composition thereof to a subject in need of said stimulation in an amount effective to stimulate the differentiation of the bone marrow progenitor cells.
- 9. The method of claim 7 wherein said subject is a human.
- 10. The method of claim 7 wherein said administering is intraperitoneal or intravenous or oral.
- 11. The method of claim 7 wherein the compound of formula (1) is the diethyl ester of .gamma.-glutamyl S-benzyl cysteinyl phenylglycine.
- 12. The method of claim 11 wherein the .gamma.-glutamyl and cysteinyl residues are in the native L form and wherein the phenylglycine residue is R(-) phenylglycine.
