Claims
- 1. An apparatus for electromagnetic logging within a borehole traversing a formation, comprising:an elongated conductive metal body having a longitudinal axis and adapted for disposal within the borehole attached to cable means such that said body is directly exposed to the borehole to provide a path for current flow when disposed therein; at least one antenna disposed on the body such that the magnetic dipole moment of the antenna is tilted or perpendicular with respect to the longitudinal axis of the body; wherein each at least one antenna is adapted to transmit and/or receive electromagnetic energy; and shielding means disposed on the body to permit the passage of electromagnetic energy to or from each at least one antenna while shielding said antenna from the effects of current flow along the borehole.
- 2. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising means for conducting an alternating current through the at least one antenna, the alternating current comprising a range of 1 kHz to 5 MHz.
- 3. The apparatus of claim 2, wherein the shielding means comprises a shield formed of a conductive material and is adapted such that no current flows throughout the shield.
- 4. The apparatus of claim 3, wherein the elongated body is all metal and the apparatus is adapted for disposal within the borehole on a wireline.
- 5. The apparatus of claim 2, wherein the shielding means comprises a metallic shield adapted such that current flow throughout the shield is azimuthally symmetric.
- 6. The apparatus of claim 5, wherein the apparatus is adapted for disposal within the borehole on a wireline.
- 7. The apparatus of claim 5, wherein the shielding means includes a conductive material disposed between said shield and said body.
- 8. The apparatus of claim 3, wherein the shielding means includes an insulating material disposed between said shield and said body.
- 9. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the shielding means comprises a non-conductive compound disposed on the body to cover the at least one antenna.
- 10. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the shielding means comprises a shield formed of an insulating material.
- 11. A method for altering the flow of an electric current along a subsurface borehole in the vicinity of an antenna disposed within the borehole, the antenna being disposed on a conductive metal body having a longitudinal axis and adapted for disposal within the borehole attached to cable means, the antenna being adapted to transmit and/or receive electromagnetic energy at a frequency range of 1 kHz to 5 MHz, comprising:a) disposing the antenna along the metal body such that the magnetic dipole moment of the antenna is tilted or perpendicular with respect to the longitudinal axis of the body; b) disposing shielding means on the body to permit the passage of electromagnetic energy to or from each at least one antenna while shielding said antenna from the effects of current flow along the borehole; and c) disposing the metal body within the borehole such that the body is directly exposed to the borehole to provide a path for current flow along the borehole.
- 12. The method of claim 11, step b comprising covering the at least one antenna with a shield adapted such that no current flows throughout the shield.
- 13. The method of claim 12, wherein the elongated body is all metal and the method is performed after drilling of the borehole.
- 14. The method of claim 12, wherein the shield is formed of a conductive material and includes an insulating material disposed between said shield and said body.
- 15. The method of claim 11, step b comprising covering the at least one antenna with a metallic shield adapted such that current flow throughout the shield is azimuthally symmetric.
- 16. The method of claim 15, wherein the method is performed after drilling of the borehole.
- 17. The method of claim 15, wherein the shield includes a conductive material disposed between said shield and said body.
- 18. The method of claim 11, wherein the shielding means comprises a non-conductive compound disposed on the body to cover the at least one antenna.
- 19. The method of claim 11, wherein the shielding means comprises a shield formed of an insulating material.
