Claims
- 1. In a machine for packaging an assembly of articles, which are in row arrangement, in a wrap-around type wrapper of foldable sheet material having a top wall panel, adjoining side wall forming panels and bottom wall forming panels, with certain panels cut therein and adapted to be folded inwardly on a transverse hinge line for positioning between top portions of adjacent articles, a mechanism for folding certain of said panels prior to positioning the wrapper on the articles which mechanism comprises a pair of endless traveling conveyors arranged with oppositely disposed confronting runs and having mounted thereon cooperating forming die members which extend in an outboard direction on the conveyors and which are arranged to mate with each other when advancing along said confronting conveyor runs, means for advancing successive wrappers between said mating die members, and said die members having means for engaging on opposite faces of the wrappers so as to fold certain of the panels on each said wrapper into predetermined position.
- 2. In a machine as set forth in claim 1, wherein said endless traveling conveyors comprise pairs of laterally spaced endless chains supported on end sprockets so as to travel generally in vertical planes with oppositely disposed runs in generally horizontal planes, and said mating die members carried between the chains of each pair thereof.
- 3. In a machine as set forth in claim 2 wherein said mating die members comprise male and female die members and means is provided to guide said die members into and out of mating relation as they traverse a path defined by said oppositely disposed conveyor runs.
- 4. In a machine as set forth in claim 3 wherein said guide means for said die members comprises means forming a cam track extending along said path and a cam follower on one of said die members.
- 5. In a machine as set forth in claim 3 wherein said guide means for said die members comprises a plate cam arrangement providing a cam track extending along one side of the path of one of said endless chains and a cam follower on the die member which is carried by said associated endless chain.
- 6. In a machine as set forth in claim 1 wherein said forming die members comprise male and female members each having a generally rectangular base plate and pivot means on one face thereof for connection with an associated traveling conveyor and having blank engaging members on the opposite face which are spaced thereon so that mating die members cooperate in folding certain of the panels of a wrapper which is advanced between them.
- 7. In a machine as set forth in claim 6 wherein the female die member has corner post members thereon which are positioned on said base member so as to engage and fold inwardly of the wall panels web panels at opposite ends of the side wall panels.
- 8. In a machine as set forth in claim 6 wherein the female die member has cross members thereon which are spaced in the direction of the travel of said die member so as to engage and fold certain of said panels on a transverse hinge line.
- 9. In a machine as set forth in claim 8 wherein the male die member has cross plate members on said base plate which are spaced in the direction of travel of said die members so as to cooperate with cross members on the associated female die in folding certain of said panels.
- 10. In a machine as set forth in claim 6 wherein said female die member has a closely spaced pair of cross plate members intermediate the leading and trailing ends of said base plate and said male die member has a cross plate member intermediate the leading and trailing ends for cooperation with said pair of cross plate members on the female die member in folding said panels which are adapted to be folded on said transverse hinge line.
