Claims
- 1. Vacuum degassing and solvent delivery apparatus for handling HPLC solvents and adapted for removable retention on a solvent reservoir and having coupling means for coupling of the degassing apparatus between said solvent reservoir and an apparatus having a pump and arranged to perform an HPLC operation, said vacuum degassing apparatus comprising:
- (a) a solvent reservoir having a retention means on the top thereof for removably receiving a solvent degassing and solvent delivery assembly thereon, said degassing and delivery assembly including a closed body with a coiled degassing tube disposed in a vacuum chamber formed within said closed body, and with a vacuum port being formed in said body and being in communication with said vacuum chamber;
- (b) a first solvent receiving port formed within said body for delivery of solvent from said reservoir to said coiled degassing tube;
- (c) a solvent delivery port for delivery of degassed solvent from said coiled degassing tube to a fluid line, said fluid line being in communication with an HPLC pump for transferring degassed solvent from said reservoir to said HPLC pump.
- 2. The degassing and solvent delivery apparatus of claim 1 and further comprising tubing receiving fitting means externally of said closed body communicating with said vacuum port.
- 3. The degassing and solvent delivery apparatus of claim 1 being particularly characterized in that said removable retention means comprises a threaded cap.
- 4. The degassing and solvent delivery apparatus of claim 1 being further characterized in that said coiled degassing tube extends continuously from said first solvent receiving port to said solvent delivery port.
- 5. The degassing and solvent delivery apparatus as defined in claim 1 being particularly characterized in that a solvent recycler apparatus is in communication with the output of said HPLC pump.
- 6. The degassing and solvent delivery apparatus as defined in claim 5 being particularly characterized in that a second solvent receiving port is provided for receiving recyclable solvent from said recycler apparatus for direct delivery into said reservoir.
- 7. The degassing and solvent delivery apparatus as defined in claim 1 being particularly characterized in that the degassing assembly has complementary removable retention means for mating with the retention means formed on said reservoir top and arranged for isolating the contents of said reservoir from the ambient.
- 8. The vacuum degassing and solvent delivery apparatus of claim 1 wherein said fluid line comprises an atmospheric impermeable composite tubing structure consisting of a pair of concentrically arranged sequentially stepwise extruded inner and outer tubular components and wherein:
- (a) said inner tubular component consists essentially of a fluorinated polymer selected from the group consisting of perfluoroalkoxy ethylene and fluorinated ethylene propylene;
- (b) said outer tubular component consists essentially of polyvinylidine fluoride; and
- (c) the arrangement being such that said tubular components are sequentially extruded in a stepwise operation along a common axis, with the composition of the inner tubular and outer tubular components being mutually incompatible, one with the other, and with the inner tubular component being formed in an initial step of the operation, and with the outer tubular component being thereafter extruded onto the inner tubular component immediately upon the occurrence of the wall of the inner tubular component becoming resistant to collapse following its formation so as to form said composite tubing, and with the outer surface of said inner tubular component being in substantially full contact with the inner surface of said outer tubular component.
- (a) a solvent reservoir having a retention means on the top thereof for removably receiving a solvent degassing and solvent delivery assembly thereon, said degassing and delivery assembly including a closed body with a coiled degassing tube disposed in a vacuum chamber formed within said closed body, and with a vacuum port being formed in said body and being in communication with said vacuum chamber;
- (b) a first solvent receiving port formed within said body for delivery of solvent from said reservoir to said coiled degassing tube;
- (c) a solvent delivery port for delivery of degassed solvent from said coiled degassing tube to a fluid line, said fluid line being in communication with an HPLC pump for transferring degassed solvent from said reservoir to said HPLC pump;
- (d) tubing receiving fitting means are external of said closed body communicating with said vacuum port;
- (e) said removable retention means comprises a threaded cap;
- (f) said coiled degassing tube extends continuously from said first solvent receiving port to said solvent delivery port;
- (g) said closed body includes an upper shroud, a central core and a flanged sleeve in mating engagement about the outer periphery of said closed body and wherein said central core is fabricated from a material having a greater degree of hardness than said flanged sleeve member; and
- (h) said core comprises chlorotrifluoroethylene and said flanged sleeve member is fabricated of high density polyethylene polymer.
