Claims
- 1. A utility knife comprising:
a handle; a blade mounted on the handle; a guard coupled to the handle for movement from a protective position proximate the blade to a retracted position; and a stop leg disposed on the guard for limiting movement of the guard toward the retracted position.
- 2. A utility knife according to claim 1, further comprising:
a spring biased between the guard and the handle to urge the guard toward the protective position where the guard covers at least a cutting portion of the blade.
- 3. A utility knife according to claim 1, wherein the stop leg is movably coupled to the guard for movement from a first position allowing free movement of the guard toward the retracted position, to a second position in which the stop leg is engagable with the handle for limiting movement of the guard toward the retracted position.
- 4. A utility knife comprising, in combination:
a handle including a front end and a rear end; a blade mounted on the handle, the blade having a cutting edge positioned such that at least a segment of the blade and its cutting edge project beyond the front end of the handle; a guard including a shielding portion mounted on the handle at the front end of the handle along one side of the blade, the guard being movable between a protective position in which the shielding portion of the guard extends transversely across the cutting plane of the blade and a retracted position in which the blade segment and the cutting edge are exposed; a spring coupled to the handle and to the guard yieldably biasing the guard for movement toward the protective position; and a stop leg disposed on the guard for limiting movement of the guard toward the retracted position.
- 5. A utility knife according to claim 4, wherein the stop leg includes a stop surface engagable with the handle as the guard moves toward the retracted position.
- 6. A utility knife according to claim 5, wherein the guard slopes transversely relative to the blade by an angle of about 9 degrees when the stop surface is engaged against the handle.
- 7. A utility knife according to claim 4, wherein the stop leg is pivotably coupled to the guard for movement from a first position allowing free movement of the guard toward the retracted position, to a second position in which the stop leg is engagable with the handle for limiting movement of the guard toward the retracted position.
- 8. A utility knife according to claim 7, wherein the stop leg is pivotably coupled to the guard proximate to an edge of the guard so that the stop leg may be pivoted through at least 90 degrees during movement between the first position and the second position.
- 9. A utility knife according to claim 4, wherein the stop leg is pivotably coupled to the guard at a corner of the guard so that the stop leg may be pivoted to a first position where the stop leg limits an extent of pivotal movement for the guard toward the retracted position, and so that the stop leg also may be pivoted to a second position where the stop leg does not limit pivot movement for the guard.
- 10. A utility knife according to claim 4, wherein the guard includes at least one rib formed in the guard.
- 11. A utility knife according to claim 4, wherein the stop leg has a bend formed therein and a rib support formed at the bend.
- 12. A utility knife comprising:
a handle; a blade mounted on the handle, the blade having a cutting edge and being positioned such that at least a segment of the blade and its cutting edge project beyond a front end of the handle; a shield coupled to the handle for movement from a protective position in which the shield extends transversely across the cutting plane of the blade and covers one side of the blade segment and its cutting edge, to a retracted position in which the blade segment and cutting edge are exposed, with a portion of the shield extending over-center with respect to the cutting edge of the blade when the shield is in the protective position, so that pressure forces acting against the shield tend to hold the shield in the protective position and the cutting edge of the blade remains covered in response to contact of the shield against the operator at the normal angle of engagement during follow-through that accompanies rapid hand movements; a spring coupled to the shield yieldably opposing swinging movement of the shield away from the protective position and returning the shield to the protective position automatically upon disengagement; and a stop leg pivotably coupled to the shield.
- 13. A utility knife comprising:
a handle; a blade mounted on the handle, the blade having a cutting edge and being positioned such that at least a segment of the blade and its cutting edge project beyond a front end of the handle; a safety shield coupled to the handle for movement from a protective position in which the shield extends transversely across the cutting plane of the blade and overlies its cutting edge, to a retracted position in which the cutting edge is exposed, with a portion of the shield extending over-center with respect to the cutting edge of the blade when the shield is in the protective position; a spring coupled to the safety shield yieldably opposing movement of the shield away from the protective position and urging the shield to the protective position automatically upon disengagement so that pressure forces acting against the shield tend to hold the shield in the protective position and the cutting edge of the blade remains covered in response to contact of the shield against the operator at the normal angle of engagement during follow-through that accompanies rapid slicing hand movements; and a stop leg pivotably coupled to the shield.
- 14. A utility knife comprising:
a handle; a blade mounted on the handle, the blade having a cutting edge and being positioned such that at least a segment of the blade and its cutting edge project beyond a front end of the handle; a safety shield coupled, to the handle for movement from a protective position in which the shield extends transversely across the cutting plane of the blade and completely covers one side of the blade segment and overlies its cutting edge, to a retracted position in which the blade segment and cutting edge are exposed, with a portion of the shield extending over-center with respect to the cutting edge of the blade when the shield is in the protective position; a spring coupled to the safety shield yieldably opposing swinging movement of the shield away from the protective position and returning the shield to the protective position in response to disengagement of the blade from a cutting surface; the safety shield including an outwardly-turned flange portion that projects transversely with respect to the shield, the flange portion preventing inadvertent digging into the cutting surface and providing an angularly offset leverage point on the shield for reacting the spring; and a stop leg movably coupled to the shield such that when the stop leg is in a first position, the stop leg limits movement of the shield in a direction toward the retracted position.
- 15. A utility knife comprising:
a handle; a blade mounted on the handle; a shield coupled to the handle for movement from a protective position proximate the blade to a retracted position in which the blade is exposed; a spring coupled to the handle and to the shield yieldably biasing the shield for movement toward the protective position; and a stop leg coupled to the shield for movement from a first position allowing free movement of the shield toward the retracted position, to a second position in which the stop leg is engagable with the handle for limiting movement of the shield toward the retracted position..
