Claims
- 1. A braided tape having a width defined as the distance between its lengthwise extending, laterally spaced first and second edges, and a fiber volume in different laterally adjacent longitudinally extending portions that differs from that fiber volume that results from the collapse of a circumferentially uniform tubular braid.
- 2. A braided tape having a width defined as the distance between its lengthwise extending, laterally spaced first and second edges, the tape comprising a helical braid.
- 3. The tape of claim 1 further comprising unidirectionals.
- 4. The tape of claim 3 wherein the size of the unidirectionals is varied in different laterally spaced longitudinally extending portions of the tape.
- 5. The tape of claim 3 wherein the size of the unidirectionals is varied in a progressively increasing manner over at least a portion of the width of the tape.
- 6. The tape of claim 3 wherein the spacing of the unidirectionals in different longitudinally extending portions thereof is varied in a predetermined manner as they are introduced into the braid.
- 7. The tape of claim 1 wherein the tape is curved and all longitudinally extending portions thereof have substantially the same fiber volume.
- 8. The tape of claim 1 wherein the tape comprises a collapsed helical hollow tubular braid.
- 9. The tape of claim 2, wherein the tape is curved and includes unidirectionals, the size of the unidirectionals is varied in a progressively increasing manner from its smaller radius periphery toward its larger radius periphery.
- 10. The tape of claim 1, wherein at least one of the edge portions has a fiber volume less than that of an immediately adjacent longitudinally extending portion.
- 11. The tape of claim 1 formed from fibers from the group consisting of PAN fibers including OPF, carbon fibers, graphite fibers, ceramic fibers, precursors of carbon fibers and precursor of ceramic fibers, and mixtures of these.
- 12. The tape of claim 2, formed from fibers from the group consisting of PAN fibers including OPF, carbon fibers, graphite fibers, ceramic fibers, precursors of carbon fibers and precursor of ceramic fibers, and mixtures of these.
- 13. A method of forming a braided filamentary tape comprising forming a tubular braid and introducing unidirectionals in a varying manner into the braid as it is being formed, and collapsing the hollow tubular braid.
- 14. The method of claim 13, further comprising curving the tubular braid and collapsing the braid into a curved flat tape.
- 15. The method of claim 13, further comprising differentially controlling the tension of the undirectionals as they are introduced into the braid.
- 16. The method of claim 13, further comprising reducing distortion of the braided tape by differential tension control of the unidirectionals.
- 17. The method of claim 13, further comprising varying the size of the undirectionals in a progressively increasing manner from on longitudinally extending portion of the tape toward an adjacent longitudinally extending portion of the tape.
- 18. The method of claim 14, further comprising varying the size of the unidirectionals in a progressively increasing manner toward that portion of the braid which corresponds to the larger radius periphery of the curved flat tape.
- 19. The method of claim 13, further comprising varying the spacing of the unidirectionals in a predetermined manner as they are introduced into the braid.
- 20. The method of claim 13, further comprising varying the size of the unidirectionals in a predetermined manner as they are introduced into the braid.
- 21. The method of claim 13, comprising braiding of fibers from the group consisting of PAN fibers including OPF, carbon fibers, graphite fibers, ceramic fibers, precursors of carbon fibers and precursor of ceramic fibers, and mixtures of these.
- 22. A method of forming a braided filamentary tape comprising forming a helical tubular braid, and collapsing the braid into a helical tape.
- 23. The method of claim 22, introducing unidirectionals in a varying manner into the braid as it is being formed.
