Claims
- 1. For railway cars having sprung and unsprung portions, a brake control apparatus interposed between a pressurized brake pressure supply line with a train brake valve therein and a pressurized brake cylinder line connected to the brakes of the railway car for transmitting a pressure drop signal responsive to operation of the train brake valve, said apparatus comprising:
- structure defining a first chamber having a port connected to the brake pressure supply line for receiving the pressure drop signal from the train brake valve;
- structure defining a second chamber having a port connected to the brake cylinder line for transmitting a predetermined pressure drop signal to the railway car brakes;
- valve means for selectively connecting the first and second chambers;
- diaphragm means movably abutting the second chamber and connected to the valve means for biasing said valve means open responsive to the pressure in the brake cylinder line;
- means for applying to said diaphragm means a predetermined bias to urge said valve means closed;
- a strut mounted for translation responsive to the relative positioning of the sprung and unsprung portions of the railway car;
- a spring coupled between the strut and valve means for applying to said valve means a predetermined bias proportional to the inward translation of said strut to urge said valve means open, and for isolating vibration of said strut from said valve means; and
- check valve means interconnecting the first and second chambers and responsive to pressure differential for equalizing said chambers upon a pressure rise in the brake pressure supply line.
- 2. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the predetermined biasing means comprises:
- a spring disposed in the second chamber; and
- means for adjustably preloading the spring.
- 3. The apparatus of claim 1, further including a contact nut adjustably secured to the distal end of the strut.
- 4. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein said valve means includes a valve stem slidably received through the structure defining the first chamber, and further including an O-ring seated in said structure in surrounding sealing engagement with said valve stem.
- 5. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein said valve means includes a valve stem slidably received through the structure defining the first chamber, and further including a flexible bellows connected in sealing relationship between the valve stem and said structure.
- 6. The apparatus of claim 1, further including:
- normally closed safety valve means connected between the brake pressure supply line and the brake cylinder line for permitting direct fluid communication therebetween responsive to pressure drops in the brake pressure supply line below a predetermined level.
