Claims
- 1. A brake control system method according to the steps of:
- determining driver commanded yaw rate;
- measuring actual yaw rate;
- determining a yaw rate error;
- determining, in response to vehicle conditions, a yaw rate dead band wherein the yaw rate dead band varies with vehicle conditions;
- comparing the yaw rate error to the dead band; and
- if the yaw rate error exceeds the dead band, controlling the vehicle responsive to the yaw rate error, wherein yaw rate control only occurs when the yaw rate error exceeds the dead band.
- 2. A brake control system method according to claim 1, wherein the variable dead band is continuously updated responsive vehicle speed and steering wheel angle.
- 3. A brake control system method according to claim 1, wherein a first table function is used when the vehicle is in an understeer condition and a second table function is used when the vehicle is in an oversteer condition, wherein the deadband is independently adjusted for the oversteer and understeer conditions.
- 4. A brake control system method according to claim 3, wherein the first table function allows a larger deadband for understeer conditions than the second table function allows for oversteer conditions.
- 5. A brake control method according to claim 3, wherein the first and second table functions are responsive to vehicle speed and steering angle.
- 6. A brake control system comprising:
- a yaw rate sensor providing an output signal indicative of measured vehicle yaw rate;
- a plurality of additional sensors for measuring a plurality of vehicle conditions;
- a microprocessor controller including
- memory including a first table function having a first output representing an oversteer deadband responsive to the plurality of vehicle conditions and a second table function having a second output representing an understeer deadband responsive to the plurality of vehicle conditions,
- a command generator responsive to the first and second outputs representing the oversteer and understeer dead bands, the measured vehicle yaw rate and the plurality of vehicle conditions to provide an output command; and
- at least one actuator responsive to the output command.
- 7. A brake control system according to claim 6, also comprising:
- a command interpreter responsive to the plurality of vehicle conditions to provide a desired vehicle yaw rate;
- means, within the microprocessor controller responsive to the desired vehicle yaw rate and the measured vehicle yaw rate, for determining a yaw rate error,
- wherein the output command is only applied to the at least one actuator if the vehicle is in an oversteer condition and the yaw rate error is greater than the oversteer dead band or if the vehicle is in an understeer condition and the yaw rate error is greater than the understeer dead band.
