Claims
- 1. A pre-burnished brake pad comprising:
- a friction surface which has been burnished using a heat source having a power in the range of about 250 Mw/m.sup.2 to about 500 Mw/m.sup.2.
- 2. A pre-burnished brake pad according to claim 1, wherein the friction surface of the brake pad has a coefficient of friction within about 15% of the steady state coefficient of friction.
- 3. A pre-burnished brake pad according to claim 1, wherein the friction surface of the brake pad has a coefficient of friction within about 10% of the steady state coefficient of friction.
- 4. A pre-burnished brake pad according to claim 1, wherein the coefficient of friction of the friction surface is at least 25% greater than an initial coefficient of friction of the friction surface.
- 5. A pre-burnished brake pad according to claim 1, wherein the coefficient of friction of the friction surface is at least 50% greater than an initial coefficient of friction of the friction surface.
- 6. The pre-burnished brake pad according to claim 1, wherein the brake pad contains 7% by weight or more of metal.
- 7. The pre-burnished brake pad according to claim 1, wherein the brake pad contains an oxidizable or carbonizable resin binder or carbon containing material.
- 8. The pre-burnished brake pad according to claim 1, wherein the friction surface has a burnished layer having a thickness of about 20 microns to about 40 microns.
- 9. The pre-burnished brake pad according to claim 8, wherein the friction surface has a burnished layer having a thickness of about 25 microns to about 40 microns.
- 10. The pre-burnished brake pad according to claim 9, wherein the friction surface has a burnished layer having a thickness of about 30 microns to about 35 microns.
