Claims
- 1. A method of facilitating drum brake maintenance operations, including the steps of:providing a spring retraction tool having a generally rigid main body and two respective retractable members positioned so as to simultaneously engage a respective pair of brake springs of a drum brake arrangement whenever said tool is positioned on an exposed wheel flange; seating said tool on the exposed wheel flange in a predetermined position with said retractable members engaged with the respective brake springs; retracting said retractable members a predetermined distance so as to release the respective brake springs from engagement thereof with a pair of respective brake shoes, and so as to hold both of the released brake springs in such retracted and released positions to permit extraction of the respective brake shoes; selectively removing the extractable brake shoes and conducting drum brake maintenance operations; returning a pair of brake shoes into operative position in the drum brake arrangement; extending said retractable members to reverse said retracting thereof so as to re-engage the respective brake springs with the respective brake shoes; and removing said tool from the exposed wheel flange.
- 2. A method as in claim 1, wherein:said providing step includes providing said retractable members with hooked ends for engaging the respective brake springs, threaded elements for selected rotatable drive thereof relative to said generally rigid main body, and respective actuation knobs for said threaded elements to permit manual user manipulation thereof; and wherein said retracting step includes turning said actuation knobs so as to respectively drive said threaded elements relative to said main body such as to draw said hooked ends towards said main body and thereby release respectively engaged brake springs from their corresponding brake shoes.
- 3. A method as in claim 2, wherein:said extending step includes turning said actuation knobs in a direction opposite to that used during said retracting step, so as to extend said hooked ends away from said main body for re-engagement of the respective brake springs and brake shoes.
- 4. A method as in claim 3, wherein:said providing step further includes providing a metal workpiece for comprising said main body, and further includes providing respective cylindrical collars around at least a portion of each of the respective retractable members so as to facilitate their alternate retracting and extending movements without binding thereof from forces lateral to the respective longitudinal axes of said retractable members and arising from engagement with the brake springs.
- 5. A method as in claim 4, wherein said providing step further includes forming said actuation knobs as one of a rounded knob, a wing-nut, and a multi-faceted knob.
- 6. The method of claim 1 wherein the step of providing a spring retraction tool comprises providing a tool having said rigid main body with a longitudinal axis and wherein said retractable members include:a first retractable member including an adjustment end and a first hook for engaging a brake spring; and a second retractable member including an adjustment end and a second hook for engaging a brake spring; said first retractable member and said second retractable member positioned at spaced locations on the main body along the longitudinal axis for engagement of each hook with a drum brake spring; said tool further including a first adjustable retractor mechanism connected to the first retractable member at the adjustment end thereof for engaging and retracting the first hook toward the main body; a second adjustable retractor mechanism connected to the second retractable member at the adjustment end thereof for engaging and retracting the second hook toward the main body; a first collar intermediate the first retractor mechanism and the first hook; and a second collar member intermediate the second retractor mechanism and the second hook, each of said collars resting on the main body to facilitate retracting of the respective hooks.
- 7. A brake spring removal tool comprising, in combination:a rigid main body with a longitudinal axis; a first retractable member including an adjustment end and a first hook for engaging a brake spring; a second retractable member including an adjustment end and a second hook for engaging a brake, spring; said first retractable member and said second retractable member positioned at spaced locations on the main body along the longitudinal axis for engagement of each hook with a brake drum spring; a first adjustable retractor mechanism connected to the retractor member at the adjustment end thereof for engaging and retracting the first hook toward the main body; a second adjustable retractor mechanism connected to the second retractable members at the adjustment end thereof for engaging and retracting the second hook toward the main body; a first collar intermediate the first retractor mechanism and the first hook; and a second collar intermediate the second retractor mechanism and the second hook each of said collars resting on the main body to facilitate retracting of the respective hooks.
- 8. The tool of claim 7 where in the retractor mechanisms each comprise threaded nuts and the adjustment ends of the retractor members each comprise a threaded end for coaction with the associated nut.
