Claims
- 1. In a process for the preparation of a brass material from a semi-finished material constituted of a copper-zinc alloy of about 61 to 65% by weight of copper with the remainder being zinc, said semi-finished material is cold worked and subsequently subjected to a temperature- and time-measured heat treatment utilized for malleable alloys; the improvement comprising initial formation of the .alpha. solid solution only by annealing said alloy at temperatures of 450.degree. to 700.degree. C. and for an annealing period of about 20 hours at 450.degree. C. and for about 15 minutes at 700.degree. C. to totally dissolve all of the .beta. phase; thereafter cold working said alloy to a degree of deformation of at least 50%; and subsequently subjecting said alloy to a heat treatment leading to a .beta..sub.1 phase precipitation and recrystallization at temperatures of between 200.degree. and 350.degree. C., and an annealing period of between 1 minute and 500 hours.
- 2. Process as claimed in claim 1, comprising formation of .alpha. solid solution only by annealing said alloy at a temperature of about 500.degree. C.
- 3. Process as claimed in claim 1, comprising cold working said alloy to a degree of deformation of above 80%.
- 4. Process as claimed in claim 1, comprising heat treating said alloy at a temperature of between about 250.degree. to 300.degree. C.
- 5. Process as claimed in claim 1, comprising heat treating said alloy for an annealing period of up to about eight hours.
- 6. Process as claimed in claim 1, comprising imparting further cold working to said brass material subsequent to the .beta..sub.1 phase precipitation and recrystallization annealing at a degree of deformation of at least 70% for converting said material into a spring-hardened condition.
- 7. Process as claimed in claim 6, said brass material being cold worked to a degree of deformation in the range of about 80 to 99%.
- 8. Process as claimed in claim 1, comprising adding to said alloy up to about 5% by weight of nickel.
- 9. Process as claimed in claim 1 or 8, comprising adding to said alloy up to about 0.1% by weight one of the elements selected from the group consisting of zirconium, silver, niobium or vanadium.
