Claims
- 1. A method of detecting changes in the respiratory state of a patient between inspiration and expiration comprising the steps of:
- monitoring the respiratory gas flow of such a patient;
- from said monitoring, determining a patient respiratory gas flow characteristic at selected time intervals to provide a plurality of said gas flow characteristics displaced in time from one another;
- identifying selected pairs of said respiratory gas flow characteristics from said plurality;
- comparing said selected pairs of said respiratory gas flow characteristics; and
- from said comparing, identifying changes in the patient's respiratory state between inspiration and expiration.
- 2. The method as set forth in claim 1 wherein said comparing step includes comparing a later determined respiratory gas flow characteristic with a fraction of an earlier determined respiratory gas flow characteristic.
- 3. The method as set forth in claim 2 wherein said respiratory gas flow characteristic is the patient's respiratory gas flow rate.
- 4. The method as set forth in claim 1 wherein each said selected pair of respiratory gas flow characteristics includes a predicted value of the patient's respiratory gas flow rate at a selected time, and the patient's actual respiratory gas flow rate at said selected time.
- 5. The method as set forth in claim 4 wherein said predicted value of the patient's respiratory gas flow rate is determined from an actual patient respiratory gas flow rate which occurred at a time prior to said selected time.
- 6. The method as set forth in claim 4 including the additional step of differentiating a known patient respiratory gas flow rate to determine its derivative and processing said derivative and said known patient respiratory gas flow rate to determine said predicted value of the patient's respiratory gas flow rate.
- 7. The method as set forth in claim 6 wherein said processing step includes scaling said derivative with a scaling factor to obtain a scaled derivative.
- 8. The method as set forth in claim 7 wherein said processing step additionally includes modifying said scaled derivative with an offset factor to determine said predicted value of the patient's respiratory gas flow rate.
- 9. The method as set forth in claim 7 wherein said scaling factor includes a time factor.
- 10. The method as set forth in claim 9 wherein said time factor is determined at least in part by the time span between said selected time and a time prior to said selected time.
- 11. The method as set forth in claim 10 wherein said processing step additionally includes modifying said scaled derivative with an offset factor to determine said predicted value of the patient's respiratory gas flow rate.
