Claims
- 1. A process for separating H.sub.2 from a mixed gas stream comprising the steps of:
- providing a gas-permeable membrane containing an organometallic complex having the general formula L.sub.n MR.sub.m CpXCpR'.sub.m' M'L'.sub.n', wherein:
- L.sub.n and L'.sub.n' are ancillary ligands taken from the group consisting of [Cr, Fe and Mn] CO and CNR (R=alkyl),
- M and M' are transition metals taken from the group consisting of Cr, Fe and Mn,
- Cp is the cyclopentadienyl group,
- R.sub.m and R'.sub.m' are alkyl groups substituted for hydrogen on the Cp ring,
- m and m' represent integers from 0-4,
- X is a bridging functionality taken from the group consisting of --CH.sub.2 --, --O--, --NR-- (R=alkyl) and --CO--, and
- n and n' represent integers from 1-6;
- said membrane constructed and arranged so that a pressure differential can be applied across it;
- supplying a mixed gas stream containing H.sub.2 at a first higher pressure on one side of said membrane; and
- drawing off a gas stream of hydrogen at a second lower pressure from the other side of said membrane.
- 2. A method for selectively separating hydrogen from a mixed gas stream comprising the steps of:
- absorbing said H.sub.2 from said gas stream into a liquid containing an organometallic complex,
- said organometallic complex having the general formula L.sub.n MR.sub.m CpXCpR'.sub.m' M'L'.sub.n' wherein
- L.sub.n and L'.sub.n' are ancillary ligands taken from the group consisting of CO and CNR (R=alkyl),
- M and M' are transition metals taken from the group consisting of Cr, Fe and Mn,
- Cp is the cyclopentadienyl group,
- R.sub.m and R'.sub.m' are alkyl groups substituted for hydrogen on the Cp ring,
- m and m' represent integers from 0-4,
- X is a bridging functionality taken from the group consisting of --CH.sub.2 --, --O--, --NR-- (R=alkyl) and --O--, and
- n and n' represent integers from 1-6;
- by introducing said gas stream to said liquid under environmental conditions favorable to the formation of dihydride of said organometallic complex; and
- recovering said H.sub.2 from said liquid by introducing said liquid to environmental conditions favorable to the formation of the unhydrided form of said organometallic complex and dehydrogenating said dihydride.
- 3. The method of claim 2, wherein said dihydride comprises the compound characterized by the structural formula:
- CpCH.sub.2 Cp[Cr(CO).sub.3 H].sub.2
- wherein Cp represents a cyclopentadienyl ring.
- 4. The method of claim 2, wherein said environmental conditions favorable to the formation of said dihydride include a pressure of 2-10 atmospheres of H.sub.2 and said environmental conditions favorable to the formation of the unhydrided form of said organometallic complex include a pressure of 0-1 atmospheres of H.sub.2.
