Claims
- 1. An antenna comprising:
a radiating element; a first periodic slow wave structure including a first terminal electrically connected to a first location of said radiating element; a second periodic slow wave structure including a first terminal electrically connected to a second location of said radiating element; and wherein said first and said second periodic slow wave structures exhibit a substantially constant propagation factor with respect to a range of frequencies.
- 2. The antenna of claim 1 wherein the effective electrical length of the antenna is determined substantially by the effective electrical length of the first and the second periodic slow wave structures.
- 3. The antenna of claim 1 further comprising a ground plane, wherein the second periodic slow wave structure further includes a second terminal electrically connected to said ground plane, and wherein the first periodic slow wave structure further includes a second terminal for receiving an input signal when the antenna is operative in a transmitting mode and for providing a signal when the antenna is operative in a receiving mode.
- 4. The antenna of claim 3 wherein the radiating element comprises a horizontal conductor substantially parallel to and spaced apart from the ground plane.
- 5. The antenna of claim 1 wherein the radiating element is formed from a conductive material and is shaped to produce desired antenna characteristics.
- 6. The antenna of claim 1 wherein the sum of the effective electrical length of the first and the second periodic slow wave structures and the effective electrical length of the radiating element presents a substantially resonant condition over a desired frequency band.
- 7. The antenna of claim 1 wherein each one of the first and the second periodic slow wave structures comprises a folded transmission line.
- 8. The antenna of claim 1 wherein the antenna radiation pattern is substantially in the azimuth plane or is substantially in the elevation direction, as determined by the effective electrical length of the antenna elements, .
- 9. The antenna of claim 1 wherein each one of the first and the second periodic slow wave structures comprises a dielectric substrate and a transmission line encircling said dielectric substrate, and wherein a first end of said transmission line of the first periodic slow wave structure forms the first terminal of the first periodic slow wave structure, and wherein a first end of said transmission line of the second periodic slow wave structure forms the first terminal of the second periodic slow wave structure.
- 10. The antenna of claim 9 wherein the transmission line comprising each one of the first and the second periodic slow wave structures is an elongated transmission line having a periodic pitch.
- 11. The antenna of claim 10 wherein the transmission line comprising each one of the first and the second periodic slow wave structures is in the form of a helix.
- 12. The antenna of claim 1 wherein each one of the first and the second periodic slow wave structures comprises a transmission line disposed on a substrate, and wherein said transmission line further comprises a plurality of periodic segments.
- 13. The antenna of claim 12 wherein the plurality of periodic segments comprise a plurality of zig-zag segments.
- 14. The antenna of claim 12 wherein the plurality of periodic segments comprise a plurality of wave-like connected rectangle segments.
- 15. The antenna of claim 12 wherein the plurality of periodic segments comprise a plurality of wave-like connected triangle segments.
- 16. The antenna of claim 1 wherein the transmission line of each one of the first and the second periodic slow wave structures comprises an undulating periodic transmission line.
- 17. The antenna of claim 1 wherein each one of the first and the second periodic slow wave structures comprises a first and a second transmission line each comprising an elongated segment and a plurality of stubs extending therefrom and defining gaps therebetween, and wherein said first and said second transmission lines are oriented such that one of the plurality of stubs of the first transmission line is disposed within a gap of the second transmission line.
- 18. The antenna of claim 1 wherein each one of the first and the second periodic slow wave structures comprises an interdigital tape line.
- 19. The antenna of claim 1 wherein each one of the first and the second periodic slow wave structures comprises a meander tape line.
- 20. The antenna of claim 1 wherein each one of the first and the second periodic slow wave structures comprises a serpentine meanderline.
- 21. An antenna comprising:
a radiating element; a ground plane; a first periodic slow wave structure electrically connected between said radiating element and said ground plane; a second periodic slow wave structure including a first terminal electrically connected to said radiating element and a second terminal for receiving an input signal when the antenna is operative in a transmitting mode and for providing a signal when the antenna is operative in a receiving mode; and wherein said first and said second periodic slow wave structures exhibit a substantially constant propagation factor with respect to a frequency band.
- 22. The antenna of claim 21 wherein the sum of the effective electrical length of the first and the second periodic slow wave structures and the effective electrical length of the radiating element presents a substantially resonant condition over a frequency band.
- 23. The antenna of claim 21 wherein the effective electrical length of the antenna is determined primarily by the effective electrical length of the first and the second periodic slow wave structures.
