Claims
- 1. A bundle of synthetic fibers for transporting aqueous fluids, wherein said bundle comprises at least two fibers, at least one of said two fibers having a non-round cross-section and said bundle having(A) a Specific Volume greater than 4.0 cc/gm, (B) a [Vertical Rise of the Bundle (VRB)]/[Vertical Rise of the Single Fiber (VRSF)] greater than or equal to 1.3, and (C) a Vertical Rise of the Bundle (VRB) greater than or equal to 4.0 centimeters.
- 2. The bundle of synthetic fibers of claim 1 having an average inter-fiber capillary width of from 25 to 400 microns.
- 3. The bundle of synthetic fibers of claim 1 wherein the cross-section and the surface composition of the fibers satisfy the inequality: (Pγ cos(θa))/d>0.03 dynes/den,wherein P is the perimeter of the cross-section of the fiber, γ is the surface tension of the liquid, (θa) is the advancing contact angle of the liquid measured on a flat surface made from the same material as the fiber and having the same surface treatment and d is the denier of the fiber.
- 4. The bundle of synthetic fibers of claim 1 wherein said cross-section of said fiber defines a first arm having a length greater than 40 microns.
- 5. The bundle of synthetic fibers of claim 4 wherein said first arm has a length greater than 100 microns.
- 6. The bundle of synthetic fibers of claim 1 wherein said fibers have a Single Fiber Bulk Factor of greater than 4.0.
- 7. The bundle of synthetic fibers of claim 6 wherein the Specific Volume is between 4.0 and 10.0.
- 8. The bundle of synthetic fibers of claim 7 wherein the Specific Volume is between 4.0 and 7.2.
- 9. The bundle of synthetic fibers of claim 1 wherein VRB/VRSF is greater than 2.0.
- 10. The bundle of synthetic fibers of claim 9 wherein VRB/VRSF is about 2.3.
- 11. The bundle of synthetic fibers of claim 1 wherein VRB/VRSF is between 1.66 and 11.7.
- 12. The bundle of synthetic fibers of claim 1 wherein VRB is between 4.0 and 15 centimeters.
- 13. The bundle of synthetic fibers of claim 1 wherein the fibers have a denier between 15 and 250.
- 14. The bundle of synthetic fibers of claim 13 wherein the fibers have a denier between 30 and 170.
