Claims
- 1. In a heating/cooling system selectively operable to a heating mode and to a cooling mode for controlling the temperature of a building space wherein there are provided a heater means operative in the heating mode including a burner means operable from a source of gas to supply heat to the building space and a valve means for controlling the flow of gas from the source to the burner meas such that the flow of gas to the burner means is modulated over a range of flow rates in accordance with building demand to maintain a desired building temperature, a refrigeration means operative in the cooling mode for supplying cooling to the building space when the building temperature rises above a desired temperature, and a blower means operative to circulate air in the building space: a control system for controlling said heating/cooling system comprising a control circuit module comprising a control circuit and input circuit means for said module comprising means for sensing the building temperature, means for setting a desired building temperature, means for supplying a signal representing the difference between the set and sensed temperatures, mode control switch means selectively operable to cool, off and heat positions, and blower switch means for operating said blower means, said system having a plurality of only four conductors connecting said input circuit means with said control circuit module such that the said refrigeration means is rendered operative when said mode control switch means is cool, said heater means is rendered operative when said mode control switch means is in heat, said heater means and said refrigeration means are rendered inoperative when said mode control switch means is in off, and said blower means is operative from said blower switch means when said mode control switch means is in any of its three operating positions.
- 2. The control system of claim 1 including means operatively coupling said blower means in circuit such that said blower means operates when said refrigeration means operates.
- 3. The control system of claim 1 wherein said signal is supplied from said input circuit means to said control circuit via one pair of said conductors.
- 4. The control system of claim 3 wherein said refrigeration means is rendered operative via one of said one pair of conductors and one of the conductors of the other pair of conductors when said mode control switch means is in cool.
- 5. The control system of claim 4 wherein said blower switch means is operatively coupled in circuit to energize said blower means via said one conductor of said one pair of conductors and the other condutor of said other pair of conductors.
- 6. The control system of claim 5 including a safety circuit operative when said mode control switch means is in heat, said safety circuit being operatively coupled with said control circuit via said other conductor of said other pair of conductors and said one pair of conductors.
- 7. The control system of claim 1 wherein said control system is supplied from a source of AC voltage, said refrigeration means is rendered operative via one pair of conductors, and when said mode control switch means is in cool, full wave voltage from said AC source is supplied via said one pair of conductors to operate said refrigeration means whenever cooling is demanded.
- 8. The control system of claim 7 wherein said blower switch means is operatively coupled in circuit to energize said blower means via one of said one pair of conductors and one of the other pair of condutors, said blower means being energized via half cycles of one polarity from said AC source.
- 9. The control system of claim 8 wherein said blower means comprises a blower relay having a coil and contacts for energizing the blower means, said coil being energized by said one polarity half cycles to thereby close said contacts and operate said blower means.
- 10. The control system of claim 9 including diode means operatively coupling said relay coil with said source whereby only said one polarity half cycles are supplied to energize said relay coil.
- 11. In a heating/cooling system of selectively operable to a heating mode and to a cooling mode for controlling the temperature of a building space wherein there are provided a heater means operative in the heating mode for supplying heat to the building space when the temperature of the building drops below a desired level, a refrigeration means operative in the cooling mode for supplying cooling to the building space when the building temperature rises above a desired temperature and a blower means operative to circulate air in the building space: a control system for controlling said heating/cooling system comprising a control circuit module comprising a control circuit and an input circuit module located remotely from said control circuit module, said input circuit module comprising input circuit means for supplying a signal representing the difference between a desired building temperature and the actual building temperature, mode control switch means selectively operable to cool, off and heat positions and blower switch means for operating said blower means, a plurality of only four conductors connecting said two modules together such that said refrigeration means is rendered operative when said mode control switch means is cool and operates when the building temperature rises above the desired temperature, said heater means is rendered operative when said mode control switch means is in heat and operates when the building temperature drops below a desired value, said heater means and said refrigeration means are rendered inoperative when said mode control switch means is in off and said blower means is operative from said blower switch means when said mode control switch means is in any of its three operating positions.
- 12. In a control system for a building heating/cooling system having heating and cooling units and a blower unit the combination comprising a mode control switch operative to off, heat and cool positions, a blower switch operative to on and off positions, a temperature relay comprising a relay coil, means for energizing said relay coil when the building temperature drops below a desired temperature, a normally closed set of contacts operatively associated with said coil and electrically coupled with said cooling unit and said mode control switch such that when said relay coil is de-energized and said mode control switch is in cool said cooling unit operates to cool the building, a normally open set of contacts operatively associated with said coil and electrically coupled with said heating unit and said mode control switch such that when said relay coil is energized and said mode control switch is in heat said heating unit operates to heat the building, means operatively coupling said blower unit with said blower switch and said mode control switch such that said blower operates whenever said cooling unit operates and said blower unit also operates whenever said blower switch is in the on position, an additional set of normally open contacts operatively associated with said relay coil, said relay coil being electrically coupled in series circuit with a solid state switch having a gating terminal which is triggered when the building temperature drops below the desired level, said solid state switch energizing said relay coil when said gating terminal is triggered, and a feedback circuit means to said gating terminal operatively coupled in series with said additional set of contacts whereby when said coil is initially energized, additional gating current is supplied via said feedback circuit means.
- 13. In a control system for a building heating/cooling system having heating and cooling units and a blower unit the combination comprising a mode control operative to off, heat and cool positions, a blower switch operative to on and off positions, a temperature relay comprising a coil, means for energizing said relay coil when the building temperature drops below a desired temperature; a normally closed set of contacts operatively associated with said coil and electrically coupled with said cooling unit and said mode control switch such that when said relay coil is de-energized and said mode control switch is in cool said cooling unit operates to cool the building, a normally open set of contacts operatively associated with said coil and electrically coupled with said heating unit and said mode control switch such that when said relay coil is energized and said mode control switch is in heat said heating unit operates to heat the building, and means operatively coupling said blower unit with said blower switch and said mode control switch such that said blower operates whenever said cooling unit operates and said blower unit also operates whenever said blower switch is in the on position, said system including a heating relay having a normally open set of contacts electrically connected in series with the first-mentioned normally open set of contacts of said temperature relay coil.
- 14. The combination of claim 13 including a safety circuit electrically connected in series with said heating relay coil when said mode control switch is in heat and operative to de-energize said heating relay coil when the building temperature exceeds a predetermined circuit.
- 15. In a control system for a building heating/cooling system having heating and cooling units and a blower unit the combination comprising a mode control switch operative to off, heat and cool positions, a blower switch operative to on and off positions, a temperature relay comprising a coil, means for energizing said relay coil when the building temperature drops below a desired temperature, a normally closed set of contacts operatively associated with said coil and electrically coupled with said cooling unit and said mode control switch such that when said relay coil is de-energized and said mode control switch is in cool said cooling unit operates to cool the building, a normally open set of contacts operatively associated with said coil and electrically coupled with said heating unit and said mode control switch such that when said relay coil is energized and said mode control switch is in heat said heating unit operates to heat the building, means operatively coupling said blower unit with said blower switch and said mode control switch such that said blower operates whenever said cooling unit operates and said blower unit also operates whenever said blower switch is in the on position, said system being operative from a source of AC voltage and further including a heating relay having a coil, means for energizing said heating relay coil from half cycles of one polarity of said AC source when said mode control switch is in heat, a blower relay for operating said blower, said blower relay comprising a coil, and means operatively coupling said blower relay coil in circuit such that said blower relay coil is energized by half cycles of the other polarity of said AC source when operation of said blower is commanded.
- 16. The combination of claim 15 further including a blower relay for operating said blower, said blower relay comrpising a coil; means operatively coupling said blower relay coil in circuit such that said blower relay coil is energized by half cycles of the other polarity of said AC source when operation of said blower is commanded.
- 17. The combination of claim 15 wherein said blower relay coil and said heating relay coil are operatively coupled through a common conductor to said blower switch.
- 18. The combination of claim 17 including a diode for preventing said heating relay coil from being energized when said blower switch is on.
- 19. The combination of claim 15 wherein said blower relay coil and said heating relay coil are electrically connected in shunt with each other via diode means whereby said heating relay is energized by said one polarity half cycles and said blower relay by said other polarity half cycles.
- 20. The combination of claim 19 including additional diode means electrically coupling said blower relay coil with said mode control switch and said cooling unit and by-passing said blower switch whereby said blower operates whenever said cooling unit operates.
- 21. In a control system for a building heating/cooling system having heating and cooling units and a blower unit the combination comprising a mode control switch operative to off, heat and cool positions, a blower switch operative to on and off positions, a temperature relay comprising a coil, means for energizing said relay coil when the building temperature drops below a desired temperature, a normally closed set of contacts operatively associated with said coil and electrically coupled with said cooling unit and said mode control switch such that when said relay coil is de-energized and said mode control switch is in cool said cooling unit operates to cool the building, a normally open set of contacts operatively associated with said coil and electrically coupled with said heating unit and said mode control switch such that when said relay coil is energized and said mode control switch is in heat said heating unit operates to heat the building, means operatively coupling said blower unit with said blower switch and said mode control switch such that said blower operates whenever said cooling unit operates and said blower unit also operates whenever said blower switch is in the on position, said cooling unit being of the two-stage type, and said temperature relay coil controlling one of the two cooling stages, and further including additional control circuit means for controlling the other cooling stage.
- 22. The combination of claim 21 wherein said temperature relay coil controls the second cooling stage.
- 23. The combination of claim 22 wherein said additional control circuit means comprises an additional temperature relay responsive to a temperature lower than the temperature to which the first temperature relay is responsive.
BACKGROUND AND SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
This application is a divisional of application Ser. No. 347,618 U.S. Pat. No. 3,838,811, filed Apr. 4, 1973. The present invention relates to heating and heating/cooling systems and in particular to improved control circuits for such systems.
