Claims
- 1. A method for achieving environmentally sound disposal of solid waste having volatile and non-volatile components in an operating rotary kiln comprising a heated, rotating cylinder containing in-process mineral material, said method comprising the steps of blending the waste to form a waste blend, processing the waste blend to retard the rate of release of volatile components and charging the processed waste blend into the kiln to contact the mineral material at a point along the length of the kiln cylinder wherein the kiln gas temperature is sufficient to decompose volatile components Of the waste blend.
- 2. The method of claim 1 wherein the rotary kiln is a conventional long dry or wet process rotary cement kiln fired at its discharge end and the processed waste blend is charged through a port in the kiln cylinder wall into the kiln cylinder at a point along the middle axial one-third portion of the kiln cylinder.
- 3. The method of claim 1 wherein the operating rotary kiln is a preheater or precalciner type rotary kiln having a preheater portion upstream from a rotating kiln cylinder having an upper end for receiving preheated mineral material from the preheater portion and a fired lower end where mineral material is discharged from the kiln, and wherein the processed waste blend is charged directly into the upper end of the kiln cylinder.
- 4. The method of claim 3 wherein the processed waste blend is charged through a port in the kiln cylinder wall.
- 5. The method of claim 1 wherein the processed waste blend is charged into the kiln to contact calcining in-process mineral materials.
- 6. The method of claim 5 wherein the waste blend is charged through a port in the kiln cylinder wall.
- 7. An improved method for recovery of energy values from solid wastes in an operating rotary kiln comprising a heated, rotating cylinder containing mineral material, said method comprising the steps of blending the waste to form a waste blend, processing the waste blend to retard the rate of release of volatiles and charging the waste blend into the kiln to contact the mineral material at a point along the length of the kiln cylinder where the kiln gas temperature is sufficient to decompose volatile components of the solid waste.
- 8. The method of claim 7 wherein the rotary kiln is a conventional long dry or wet process rotary cement kiln fired at its discharge end and the waste blend is charged through a port in the kiln cylinder wall into the kiln cylinder at a point along the middle axial one-third portion of the kiln cylinder.
- 9. The method of claim 7 wherein the operating rotary kiln is a preheater or precalciner type rotary kiln having a preheater portion upstream from a rotating kiln cylinder having an upper end for receiving preheated mineral material from the preheater portion and a fired lower end where mineral material is discharged from the kiln, and wherein the waste blend is charged directly into the upper end of the kiln cylinder.
- 10. The method of claim 7 wherein the processing step to retard the rate of release of volatiles includes the step of packaging the waste blend in sealable containers so that each container of waste blend has an energy value content within a predetermined energy value range.
- 11. The method of claim 1, wherein the processing step to retard the rate of release of volatile components includes the step of packaging said waste blend in containers.
- 12. The method of claim 11, wherein the step of blending the waste produces a waste blend, the homogeneity of which is such that there is not more than 3000 BTU/lb of waste difference between individual containers filled with the waste blend.
- 13. The method of claim 10, wherein the step of blending the waste produces a waste blend, the homogeneity of which is such that there is not more than 3000 BTU/lb of waste difference between individual containers filled with the waste blend.
- 14. The method of claim 11 wherein the containerized waste blend has an energy value of 300,000 to 500,000 BTUs per container.
- 15. The method of claim 10 wherein the predetermined energy value range is 300,000 to 500,000 BTUs per container.
- 16. The method of claim 13 wherein the containerized waste blend has an energy value of 300,000 to 500,000 BTUs per container.
- 17. The method of claim 11 wherein the waste blend is packaged in metal containers.
- 18. The method of claim 17 wherein the containerized waste is charged through a port in the kiln cylinder wall.
- 19. The method of claim 11 wherein the waste blend is packaged in containers of a fiber construction.
