DETAILED DESCRIPTION

Embodiments of the present disclosure may provide a burp cloth and bib combination that may ease the burden of having to buy multiple products when having a newborn and eliminate the need for additional items when having both a baby and toddler.

FIG. 1 depicts an exploded view of the components of the burp cloth and bib combination according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. The burp cloth and bib combination according to embodiments of the present disclosure may include strap 101 that may be placed around the neck of the child. Strap 101 may be positioned centrally relative to material 102 forming the burp cloth and bib, material 102 having an hourglass shape in an embodiment of the present disclosure. This hourglass shape may provide the ability to convert the material from a burp cloth into a bib and vice versa as will be described in more detail with respect to FIGS. 3-4. This hourglass shape also may give a caregiver the ability to place the burp cloth closer to the child's neck to help prevent the burp cloth from falling off the shoulder.

In embodiments of the present disclosure, the burp cloth and bib combination may include two or more pockets, such as pocket 103 depicted in FIG. 1. These pockets may be positioned at the ends of the hourglass shape of material 102 to provide versatility in use of the combination particularly when configured in bib form. The pockets may be lined with a liquid resistant barrier so that the child may not get wet when liquid may become trapped inside the pocket(s).

The burp cloth and bib combination according to embodiments of the present disclosure may have a liquid-resistant backing sewn or otherwise attached to the material formed in an hourglass shape. This backing may protect the child from liquids that may be absorbed into the material on the front portion of the burp cloth and bib combination. It also should be appreciated that the burp cloth and bib combination may be machine washable in embodiments of the present disclosure.

In an embodiment of the present disclosure, the hourglass pattern may be formed by making a rectangle using one or more materials, including but not limited to, cotton, cotton chenille, terrycloth, Flannel, Bamboo fabric, minky fabric, microfiber, gauze, batik quilting fabric, barkcloth fabric, upholstery fabric, embroidery fabric, quilting fabric, burlap fabric, canvas fabric, denim or chambray fabric, chenille fabric, drapery fabric, faux fur fabric, felt fabric, fleece fabric, jacquard fabric, knit fabric, lace fabric, linen fabric, suede fabric, polyester fabric, vinyl, thermoplastic polyurethane, polyurethane laminate, waxed canvas, nylon, PVC-coated polyester, terylene, polyester microfiber fabric, laminated cotton/poplin, oilcloth, wool, pleather or plastic, polyethylene vinyl acetate, and/or densely woven branded fabrics or fabric with an added water-resistant coating.

The rectangle may be approximately 21.5 inches in length and approximately 10.5 inches in width in an embodiment of the present disclosure. However, it should be appreciated that the rectangle may be larger or smaller or have different dimensions without departing from the present disclosure. Once the rectangle pattern has been formed, the corners on each end of the rectangle may be curved to avoid sharp edges associated with 90-degree corners of the rectangle shape.

To form the hourglass shape for both the material forming the hourglass shape and the water-resistant backing that may be attached to the material, the endpoints for the arched portions of the material may be identified. In an embodiment of the present disclosure, the endpoints may be approximately 7 inches from the top and bottom edges of the rectangle. However, it should be appreciated that the endpoint distances from the top and bottom may vary depending on the size of the rectangle that has been formed. The center point for the rectangle may then be marked. In an embodiment of the present disclosure, the center point may be 10 and ⅝ inches from the top and bottom of the rectangle. However, the center point may be at a different position depending on the size of the rectangle being used in embodiments of the present disclosure. The peak of the arch on each side may then be identified. In an embodiment of the present disclosure, the peak may be 2 and ⅜ inches to the left and right of the center point. However, again, it may be appreciated that the peaks may be different depending on the position of the center point and/or the size of the rectangle in embodiments of the present disclosure. A pattern sewing curved ruler, such as a Clover Curve Ruler or a Sew French curve ruler, may then be used to connect the endpoints to the center to create the arched shapes of the hourglass shape in an embodiment of the present disclosure. However, it should be appreciated that other marking tools may be used without departing from the present disclosure. Once marked, the arches may be cut out to form the hourglass shape. While the methodology for creating the hourglass shape on the material and/or water-resistant backing has been described herein, it should be appreciated that a pattern may be created to form the hourglass shape in embodiments of the present disclosure.

The pocket(s) that may be attached to the hourglass-shaped material may be formed by making a rectangle of approximately 4.5 inches tall by 10.5 inches in length. However, the size of the rectangle may vary depending on the size of the hourglass-shaped material in embodiments of the present disclosure. Two corners on the same size of the rectangle may be selected and rounded off in a similar manner as was described with respect to forming the hourglass-shaped material. Alternatively, if the hourglass-shaped material has already been formed, the corners of the pocket may be formed using the hourglass-shaped material as a pattern.

In an embodiment of the present disclosure, the combination may have two pockets.

Accordingly, to form two pockets, the pattern may be formed out of the material, such as fabric, as well as the water-resistant backing that may be applied to the material. The material and the water-resistant backing then may be attached to one another to form the pocket. It should be appreciated that more or fewer pockets may be used in the combination according to embodiments of the present disclosure.

The neck strap may be formed out of a rectangle that may be approximately 14¼ inches in length by approximately 3 and ¾ inches in width. As with the other components forming the combination, the size of the neck strap may depend on the size of the hourglass-shaped material and the pocket(s). The rectangle may be folded in half, and the edges may be sewn with one end open to turn the material outside in once sewn. After the material has been turned outside in, a fastener, such as a hook and loop fastener, may be affixed to the material to close the open end of the material. In an embodiment of the present disclosure, the fastener may be 3×1 inch hook and loop fastener that may be affixed approximately ½ inch from the open end of the material. However, it may be affixed at a different position if the strap is larger or smaller in size in embodiments of the present disclosure. It should be appreciated that fasteners may be attached to each end of the material, such as if a hook and loop fastener is being used; however, there may be embodiments of the present disclosure where different fastening mechanisms may be employed.

To assemble the combination as depicted in FIG. 2, the water-resistant pocket patterns may be assembled to their fabric counterparts, such as by sewing the patterns together. The hourglass-shaped material also may be attached to the water-resistant backing through sewing or stitching the patterns together. However, there may be embodiments of the present disclosure where the hourglass-shaped material and the water-resistant backing may be pre-assembled such that no stitching or attachment may be needed. The pockets may then be affixed to the hourglass-shaped material with water-resistant backing. The hourglass-shaped material combined with the water-resistant backing may be folded in half, with a middle line marked. The neck strap may be centered to this middle line and sewn or otherwise attached to the hourglass-shaped material with water-resistant backing. However, as described herein, there may be embodiments of the present disclosure where the neck strap may be removably secured to the hourglass-shaped material with water-resistant backing, such as through hook and loop fasteners.

In a completed form in an embodiment of the present disclosure, the combination may include an hourglass-shaped material that may be approximately 21.5 inches in length and approximately 10.25 inches in width at the top and bottom. The center portion of the hourglass-shaped material may include two arches separated by approximately 5.5 inches of material, wherein the arches may be approximately 2.5 inches tall at the center and approximately 7.5 inches wide at the base. The pockets may be secured at the top and bottom of the hourglass-shaped material, and the pockets may be approximately 10.25 inches wide and approximately 4 inches in height. The neck strap may be approximately 14 inches in length by approximately 3 inches in width secured across the center portion of the hourglass-shaped material. Again, it should be appreciated that these dimensions correspond to an embodiment of the present disclosure, and the dimensions may be larger or smaller without departing from the present disclosure.

FIG. 2 depicts a burp cloth and bib combination according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. As depicted herein and discussed above, the neck strap may be secured, such as through sewing, to the center portion of the hourglass-shaped material. The ends of the strap may have a fastening mechanism, such as a hook and loop fastener, in an embodiment of the present disclosure. The pockets may be sewn or otherwise attached to the top and bottom ends of the hourglass-shaped material as depicted in FIG. 2.

FIG. 3 depicts a burp cloth and bib combination configured as a burp cloth according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. When the burp cloth and bib combination is to be used as a burp cloth, the ends of the strap may be secured to one another using a fastening mechanism, such as a hook and loop fastener. The ends may be secured to one another on the side of the material having the liquid-resistant backing. The burp cloth and bib combination may then be placed on the shoulder of the caregiver, with the strap ends secured to one another resting on the shoulder of the caregiver in an embodiment of the present disclosure. While the strap is sewn to the material forming the burp cloth and bib combination as depicted in FIG. 3, it should be appreciated that there may be embodiments of the present disclosure where the strap may be removably secured to the material, such as through a fastening mechanism like a hook and loop fastener. In such embodiments, when the combination is to be used as a burp cloth, the strap may be separated from the material and then resecured when the combination is to be used as a bib or when it is being stored. However, it should be appreciated that the caregiver may elect to keep the strap secured to the material even if it is removably secured to avoid losing the strap. FIG. 3 also depicts the bib's ability to be folded back into itself for easy storage. Because it has two sides, it can be folded back into itself to keep the diaper bag clean.

FIG. 4 depicts a burp cloth and bib combination configured as a bib according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. When the combination is to be used as a bib, the material may be folded in half with the liquid-resistant backing on the inside portion when folded. It should be appreciated that the bib may be folded such that either side of the folded material may be visible when placed on the chest of the child. It should be appreciated that the material may be reversible with the same pattern or color on the top and bottom portions of the hourglass shape of the material in an embodiment of the present disclosure. However, there may be embodiments of the present disclosure where the color or pattern may be different on the top and bottom portion of the hourglass shape of the material without departing from the present disclosure. Accordingly, the caregiver may have what appears to be two of the same bib or two different bibs in embodiments of the present disclosure.

To use as a bib as depicted in FIG. 4, the strap may be exposed from the back and strapped around the neck of the child. If the combination was previously used as a burp cloth, the ends of the strap may be released from one another to expose the ends and strap around the child's neck. The strap may be secured around the child's neck using a fastening mechanism, such as a hook and loop fastener, in an embodiment of the present disclosure. However, it should be appreciated that other types of fastening mechanisms may be utilized without departing from the present disclosure.
