Claims
- 1. A bus control method for use in a data processing system having:
- a plurality of source modules,
- a plurality of destination modules,
- a source bus adapter,
- a plurality of destination bus adapters,
- a first bus connected to the plurality of source modules,
- a second bus for adapting a split transfer protocol for executing of a split read operation, and
- at least one identifier transfer line, wherein:
- at least one of said source modules is connected to said first bus,
- said source bus adapter is connected to said first bus and said second bus,
- said destination bus adapters are connected to said second bus and said destination modules,
- said split read operation comprising a read access cycle and a response cycle, where a data read request transferred from said source bus adapter to said destination bus adapters during said read access cycle is separated with respect to time from said response cycle during which response data from one of said destination bus adapters is transferred to said source bus adapter;
- said method comprising the steps of:
- assigning a source module identifier to each of said source modules;
- responsive to said data read request and an address specifying a destination module transferred from one of said source modules to said source bus adapter, outputting, from said source bus adapter to said destination bus adapters in said read access cycle of the split read operation, said address and said source module identifier via said second bus and said at least one identifier transfer line, respectively, and wherein a valid duration of said address substantially overlaps a valid duration of said source module identifier in said read access cycle;
- receiving, from one of said destination bus adapters, connected to said destination module, at said source bus adapter, said response data for said data read request and a response identifier via said second bus and said at least one identifier transfer line, respectively, in said response cycle of the split read operation, wherein a valid duration of said response data substantially overlaps a valid duration of said response identifier information in said response cycle;
- determining in said source bus adapter whether said response data received is associated with a certain one of said source modules by comparing said source module identifier with said response identifier; and,
- transferring, from said source bus adapter to said source module, when said source bus adapter determines that said response data received is associated with said source module connected to said first bus, said response data via said first bus.
- 2. The method according to claim 1, wherein said source module identifier on said at least one identifier transfer line is represented by a valve of a plurality of bits.
- 3. The method according to claim 1, wherein:
- said plurality of modules include a main memory of the data processing system;
- the main memory is assigned with an identifier.
- 4. The method according to claim 1, wherein:
- said source modules are a plurality of processors connected to said first bus; and
- said source bus adapter has registers for storing a plurality of source module identifiers associated with said processors connected thereto via said first bus, wherein:
- when said source bus adapter receives a plurality of data read requests from said processors on said first bus, said source bus adapter outputs addresses, specifying said destination modules, and said source module identifiers on said second bus and said at least one identifier transfer line, respectively, during a plurality of said read access cycles of the split read operation, and
- when said source bus adapter receives a plurality of response data and a plurality of respective response identifiers in response to said plurality of data read requests from said destination bus adapters, via said second bus and said at least one identifier transfer line, respectively, said source bus adapter transfers said response data via said first bus, when said source bus adapter determines that said plurality of response data received are associated with said processors connected to said first bus by comparing respectively said source module identifiers stored in said registers with said response identifiers.
- 5. The method according to claim 1 wherein:
- at least one of said destination bus adapters is connected to an I/O bus;
- said destination modules comprise a plurality of I/O devices. connected to said I/O bus; and
- said at least one destination bus adapter has a source identifier buffer for storing said source module identifier of said source module, said source module identifier having been transferred from said source bus adapter via said at least one identifier transfer line, so that when said at least on destination bus adapter receives, from an I/O device which serves as said destination module, said response data via said I/O bus, said at least one destination bus adapter outputs said response data and said response identifier, stored in said source identifier buffer, via said second bus and said at least one identifier transfer line, respectively.
- 6. The method according to claim 13, wherein:
- least one of said destination bus adapters is connected to an I/O bus employing said split transfer protocol;
- said destination modules comprise a plurality of I/O devices connected to said I/O bus, each of said I/O devices being assigned with an I/O identifier; and
- said at least one destination bus adapter has a source identifier buffer for storing said source module identifiers transferred from said source bus adapter via said at least one identifier transfer line and registers for storing I/O identifiers of said I/O devices, so that when said at least one destination bus adapter receives a plurality of response data together with respective I/O identifiers from the I/O devices, said at least one destination bus adapter transfers said plurality of response data and a respective plurality of response identifiers on said second bus and said at least one identifier transfer line, respectively, to said source bus adapter, where said at least one destination bus adapter determines that said plurality of response data received are associated with said I/O devices connected to said I/O bus, by comparing respectively said response identifiers received with said I/O identifiers stored in said registers.
- 7. A data processing system adopting a split transfer protocol in which a read access cycle of a split read operation for transferring a data read request from a source bus adapter, having a register for holding a self-assigned identifier, to a plurality of destination bus adapters, each destination bus adapter having a source identifier buffer, is separated with respect to time from a response cycle of the split read operation for transferring response data from one of said destination bus adapters to said source bus adapter, comprising:
- a first bus to which said source bus adapter and a plurality of source modules are connected,
- a second bus, employing the split transfer protocol, for transferring addresses and data in a multiplexed fashion, said second bus being connected to said source bus adapter and said destination bus adapters,
- a plurality of destination modules connected to said destination bus adapters, and
- at least one identifier transfer line connected to said source bus adapter and said destination bus adapters, for transferring said self-assigned identifier from said source bus adapter to said destination bus adapters or a response identifier from said destination bus adapters to said source adapter; wherein:
- in response to said data read request from one of said source modules on said first bus, said source bus adapter outputs in said read access cycle of the split read operation, an address specifying one of said destination modules and said self-assigned identifier of said source bus adapter on said second bus and said at least one identifier transfer line, respectively, to said destination bus adapters, wherein a valid duration of said address substantially overlaps a valid duration of said self-assigned identifier in the request cycle;
- when said destination bus adapters receive said address and said self-assigned identifier on said second bus and said at least one identifier transfer line, respectively, each of said destination bus adapters stores said self-assigned identifier in said source identifier buffer, and transfers said address to at least one of said destination modules connected thereto;
- when one of said destination bus adapters receives response data for said data read request from one of said destination modules, said destination bus adapter outputs to said source bus adapter in said response cycle of the split read operation, said response data and said response identifier stored in said source identifier buffer via said second bus and said at least one identifier transfer line, respectively, wherein a valid duration of said response data substantially overlaps on a valid duration of said source identifier in the response cycle;
- when said source bus adapter receives said response data and said response identifier, said source bus adapter determines whether said response data received is associated with said source bus adapter by comparing the response identifier received with the self-assigned identifier held in its own register; and
- said source bus adapter transfers said response data via said first bus when the response identifier received matches said self-assigned identifier stored in its own register.
- 8. A data processing system comprising:
- a plurality of source modules, each of said source modules being assigned with a source module identifier,
- a source bus adapter having registers for holding said source module identifiers
- a plurality of destination bus adapters, each of said destination bus adapters having a source identifier buffer,
- a plurality of destination modules connected to said destination bus adapter;
- a first bus to which said source bus adapter and said plurality of source modules are connected,
- a second bus for transferring address and data in a multiplexed fashion wherein said source bus adapter and said plurality of destination bus adapters are connected, said second bus employing a split transfer protocol, and,
- at least one identifier transfer line connected to said source bus adapter and said destination bus adapters for transferring said source module identifier or a response identifier
- said data processing system adopting the split transfer protocol in which a read access cycle of a split read operation for transferring a data read request from said source bus adapter to said plurality of destination bus adapters is separated with respect to time from a response cycle of the split read operation for transferring response data from one of said destination bus adapters to said source bus adapter, wherein:
- responsive to said data read request from one of said source modules on said first bus, said source bus adapter outputs to said destination bus adapters in said read access cycle of the split read operation, an address specifying one of said destination modules and said source module identifier on said second bus and said at least one identifier transfer line, respectively, and a valid duration of said address is substantially overlapped on a valid duration of said source module identifier in the request cycle to said destination bus adapters;
- when said destination bus adapters receive said address and said source module identifier on said second bus and said at least one identifier transfer line, respectively, each of said destination bus adapters stores said source module identifier in its own said source identifier buffer and transfers said address to the destination modules connected thereto;
- when said destination bus adapter receives response data to said read request from said destination module, said one destination bus adapter outputs to said source bus adapter in said response cycle of the split read operation, said response data and said response identifier of said source module stored in its own source identifier buffer on said second bus and said at least one identifier transfer line, respectively, wherein a valid duration of said response data substantially overlaps a valid duration of said response identifier in the response cycle;
- when said source bus adapter receives said response data and said response identifier, said source bus adapter determines whether said response data transferred is associated with said source module by comparing said response identifier received with the source module identifiers held in the registers in said source bus adapter; and
- said source bus adapter transfers said response data on said first bus when said response identifier received matches said source module identifier held in said source bus adapter.
- 9. The data processing system according to claim 8, wherein:
- when said source bus adapter receives a plurality of data read requests from a plurality of processors, which serve as said source modules, on said first bus, said source bus adapter outputs addresses specifying said destination modules and said source module identifiers on said second bus and said at least one identifier transfer line, respectively, in a plurality of said read access cycles of the split read operation; and
- when said source bus adapter receives a plurality of response data to said plurality of data read requests from said destination bus adapters and respective said response identifiers on said second bus and said at least one identifier transfer line, respectively, said source bus adapter transfers said plurality of response data on said first bus, when said source bus adapter determines that said plurality of response data received are associated with processors connected to said first bus, by comparing respective response identifiers received with the source module identifiers stored in the registers of said source bus adapter.
- 10. The data processing system according to claim 8, wherein:
- each of said destination bus adapters is connected to a third bus to which at least one of said destination modules is connected; and
- each of said destination bus adapters receives said response data through said third bus.
- 11. The data processing system according to claim 9, wherein:
- each of said destination bus adapters is connected to a third bus to which at least one destination module is connected; and
- each of said destination bus adapters receives said response data through said third bus.
- 12. An information processing system comprising:
- a processor bus connected to a plurality of processors, said processor bus employing a split bus protocol;
- a system bus employing a split bus protocol; and
- a bus adapter disposed between said processors bus and said system bus, for connecting said buses hierarchically wherein a data transfer between said processor bus and said system bus comprises a consistent split bus control of said processor and system buses for enhanced data transfer efficiency.
