Claims
- 1. In a sewing machine, a mechanism for driving a needle bar with vertical reciprocation comprising:
- a motor;
- an arm shaft and means for stitch forming responsive to rotation of said arm shaft;
- an arm shaft gear mounted on said arm shaft for rotation therewith;
- a clutch for selectively transmitting the torque of said motor to said arm shaft, said clutch comprising:
- a clutch shaft rotatably driven by said motor;
- an arm shaft driving gear mounted on said clutch shaft for engaging said arm shaft gear;
- a shifter slidably mounted on said clutch shaft for sliding movement between an engaged position for transmitting torque to said arm shaft and a disengaged position;
- an engagement/locking member mounted on said clutch shaft and having first engagement means for locking to said shifter for rotation therewith in said engaged position and second engagement means for engaging said arm shaft driving gear for transmitting torque to said arm shaft; and
- timing means for timing the disengagement of said shifter from said engagement/locking member.
- 2. A sewing machine in accordance with claim 1 wherein said timing means comprises:
- a stop position cam mounted on said clutch shaft and having a peripheral camming surface;
- a release cam having an interior cylindrical surface concentric with said peripheral surface and defining an annular space therebetween, said release cam being secured to said engagement/locking member by said second engagement means;
- at least one brake cam roller mounted within said annular space;
- a one-way clutch interposed between said arm shaft driving gear and said clutch shaft;
- rotation limit means on said arm shaft driving gear for (1) allowing said engagement/locking member and said release cam to rotate in a first direction, relative to said arm shaft driving gear, through a predetermined angle and for (2) engaging said second engagement means by rotation of said engagement/locking member and said release cam in said first direction, beyond said predetermined angle, whereby said engagement/locking member, said release cam and said arm shaft drive gear rotate in unison; and
- a spring biasing said arm shaft driving gear for rotation relative to said engagement/locking member in a second direction.
- 3. A sewing machine in accordance with claim 2 wherein said second engagement means includes at least one pin secured at one end to said release cam and secured at its opposite end to said engagement/locking member, said rotation limit means being at least one arcuate slot in said arm shaft drive gear, said arcuate slot having a length defining said predetermined angle, said pin extending through said arcuate slot.
- 4. A sewing machine in accordance with claim 3 further comprising:
- a buttonhole length adjusting mechanism for setting the buttonhole length; and
- a shifter actuator, responsive to said setting, for engaging and sliding said shifter between said engaged and disengaged positions.
- 5. A sewing machine in accordance with claim 4 wherein said shifter is a round plate with a peripheral groove and said shifter actuator includes an arcuate member received within said groove.
- 6. A sewing machine in accordance with claim 1 further comprising a sleeve rotatably mounted on said arm shaft and carrying a pulley which is engaged with a belt driven by said motor; and drive means for transmitting the rotary motion of said sleeve to said clutch shaft.
- 7. A buttonhole sewing machine comprising:
- an electric motor for driving said sewing machine;
- a machine body including a bed for holding a workpiece in cooperation with a work clamping means;
- stitch forming means for stitching buttonholes in said work and including a needle bar driving mechanism for driving a needle bar for supporting a needle, a stitch feeding mechanism, a looper-spreader mechanism for driving a looper and a spreader, and a turning mechanism for turning said needle bar, said looper and said spreader, said needle bar driving mechanism being provided with an up/down moving mechanism and a needle vibrating mechanism;
- an arm shaft for driving said up/down moving mechanism;
- a bed shaft for driving said looper-spreader mechanism;
- a cutting mechanism for forming buttonholes in said work;
- a rapid feed mechanism for rapidly feeding said bed;
- a control cam mechanism for controlling operation of said rapid feed mechanism and said stitch feeding mechanism;
- a vertical shaft driven off of said arm shaft for driving said needle vibrating mechanism, said bed shaft, and said stitch feeding mechanism;
- a rapid feed drive shaft for driving said rapid feed mechanism and said cutting mechanism;
- clutch means for selectively transmitting the torque of said motor (1) to said rapid feed drive shaft for rapid feeding or cutting or (2) to said arm shaft for stitch forming; and
- mode change-over means for controlling the respective operations and operational sequences of said cutting mechanism and/or said rapid feed mechanism.
- 8. A buttonhole sewing machine comprising:
- an electric motor for driving said sewing machine;
- a machine body including a bed for holding a workpiece in cooperation with a work clamping means;
- stitch forming means for stitching buttonholes in said work and including a needle bar driving mechanism for driving a needle bar for supporting a needle, a stitch feeding mechanism, a looper-spreader mechanism for driving a looper and a spreader, and a turning mechanism for turning said needle bar, said looper and said spreader, said needle bar driving mechanism being provided with an up/down moving mechanism and a needle vibrating mechanism;
- an arm shaft for driving said up/down moving mechanism;
- a cutting mechanism for forming buttonholes in said work;
- a rapid feed mechanism for rapidly feeding said bed;
- a control cam mechanism for controlling operation of said rapid feed mechanism and said stitch feeding mechanism;
- a vertical shaft driven off of said arm shaft for driving said needle vibrating mechanism, said bed shaft, and said stitch feeding mechanism;
- a rapid feed drive shaft for driving said rapid feeding mechanism and said cutting mechanism;
- a buttonhole length adjusting mechanism including a movable member provided on said work clamping means movable within a position-adjustable range and having a control cam for controlling the respective timings of starting and ending the stitch forming, an adjuster for adjusting said range, and a cam follower for actuating a clutch mechanism engageable with said control cam for changing over between (1) a rapid feeding mode in which torque is transmitted from said motor through said clutch to said rapid feed drive shaft for rapid feeding or cutting and (2) a stitch forming mode in which torque is transmitted from said motor through said clutch to said arm shaft for stitch forming.
- 9. A buttonhole sewing machine comprising:
- an electric motor for driving said sewing machine; a machine body including a bed for holding a workpiece in cooperation with a work clamping means;
- stitch forming means for stitching buttonholes in said work and including a needle bar driving mechanism for driving a needle bar for supporting a needle, a stitch feeding mechanism, a looper-spreader mechanism for driving a looper and a spreader, and a turning mechanism for turning said needle bar driving mechanism being provided with an up/down moving mechanism and a needle vibrating mechanism;
- an arm shaft for driving said up/down moving mechanism;
- a bed shaft for driving said looper-spreader mechanism;
- a cutting mechanism for forming buttonholes in said work;
- a rapid feed mechanism for rapidly feeding said bed;
- a control cam mechanism for controlling operation of said rapid feed mechanism and said stitch feeding mechanism, said control cam mechanism including a main cam;
- a vertical shaft driven off of said arm shaft for driving said needle vibrating mechanism, said bed shaft, and said stitch feeding mechanism;
- said turning mechanism including a turning shaft, a cam follower controlled by a main cam for driving said turning shaft and a parallel quadric crank link, mounted on said turning shaft, for turning said looper and said spreader synchronously with each other.
- 10. A buttonhole sewing machine comprising:
- an electric motor for driving said sewing machine;
- a machine body including a bed for holding a workpiece in cooperation with a work clamping means;
- stitch forming means for stitching buttonholes in said work and including a needle bar driving mechanism for driving a needle bar for supporting a needle, a stitch feeding mechanism, a looper-spreader mechanism for driving a looper and a spreader, and a turning mechanism for turning said needle bar, said looper and said spreader, said needle bar driving mechanism being provided with an up/down moving mechanism and a needle vibrating mechanism;
- an arm shaft for driving said up/down moving mechanism;
- a bed shaft for driving said looper-spreader mechanism;
- a cutting mechanism for forming buttonholes in said work;
- a rapid feed mechanism for rapidly feeding said bed;
- a control cam mechanism for controlling operation of said rapid feed mechanism and said stitch feeding mechanism;
- a vertical shaft driven off of said arm shaft for driving said needle vibrating mechanism, said bed shaft, and said stitch feeding mechanism;
- said needle vibrating mechanism including:
- a sleeve slidably mounted on said needle bar;
- a bell crank pivoted by said vertical shaft;
- a swinging lever connected at one end to said bell crank and at its opposite end to said sleeve, for reciprocating said needle bar laterally responsive to the pivoting of said bell crank;
- said turning mechanism including a turning frame slidably mounted on said needle bar; and
- a coupling disposed between said sleeve and said turning frame, said coupling linking said sleeve and said turning frame for sliding motion together while permitting said turning frame to rotate independently of said sleeve.
- 11. A buttonhole sewing machine according to claim 10, in which said bell crank is provided with a stitch width adjuster for varying the extent of the swing of said lever to thereby adjust the width of the lateral reciprocating movement of said needle bar.
- 12. A buttonhole sewing machine according to claim 10, in which said bell crank is provided with a needle point adjuster for varying the pivotal point of said bell crank on said machine body to thereby move the point of impact of said needle.
- 13. A buttonhole sewing machine in accordance with claim 10 wherein said sleeve is provided with a peripheral groove and said coupler includes a split ring portion rotatably received in said groove.
- 14. A buttonhole sewing machine in accordance with claim 10 further comprising:
- a needle vibrating eccentric mounted on said vertical shaft;
- a needle vibrating fork, said eccentric imparting a camming action to said fork;
- a needle vibrating rod connected at one end to said fork and driven with linear reciprocation by said camming action, the end of said bar opposite said one end being connected to said bell crank.
- 15. A buttonhole sewing machine in accordance with claim 10 wherein said needle bar is provided with a longitudinal groove which slidably receives a projection associated with said turning frame to transfer torque from said turning frame to said needle bar.
- 16. A buttonhole sewing machine comprising:
- an electric motor for driving said sewing machine;
- a machine body including a bed for holding a workpiece in cooperation with a work clamping means;
- a stitch forming means for stitching buttonholes in said work and including:
- a needle bar driving mechanism for driving a needle bar for supporting a needle,
- a looper-spreader mechanism for driving a looper and a spreader, and
- a turning mechanism for turning said needle bar, said looper and said spreader,
- said needle bar driving mechanism being provided with an up/down moving mechanism and a needle vibrating mechanism;
- an arm shaft for driving said up/down moving mechanism;
- a bed shaft for driving said looper-spreader mechanism;
- a cutting mechanism for cutting buttonholes in said work;
- a control cam mechanism including a rapid feed mechanism for rapidly feeding said bed, a stitch feeding mechanism and a main control cam for controlling operation of said rapid feed mechanism and said stitch feeding mechanism;
- a vertical shaft linked with said arm shaft for driving said needle vibrating mechanism, said bed shaft, and said stitch feeding mechanism;
- said rapid feed mechanism including an intermediate shaft;
- power switching clutch means for transmitting the torque of said motor, in a rapid feeding mode, to said intermediate shaft, to cause said rapid feeding mechanism to feed said bed rapidly and, in a stitch feeding mode, to a given one of said arm shaft, said vertical shaft, and said bed shaft to operate said stitch forming device; and
- a clutch driving device including a bidirectionally urging spring for storing elastic force and a release means responsive to the detection of buttonhole length for releasing said stored elastic force to drive said clutch means to change between the rapid feeding and the stitch feeding modes.
