Claims
- 1. A cabinet latch comprising,
a base having a mounting member for connection to a support such as the inside of a door or drawer and carrying a pair of panels having opposed faces, a hook member having a pair of arms connected together, one of said arms being longer than the other and having a catch at a free end thereof, a track on each of the opposed faces of the panels and a first pair of axially aligned guides on the hook member at the junction of the two arms, said guides defining a pivot for the hook member when the guides are in the tracks enabling the longer arm to be displaced, a second pair of coaxial guides mounted on the sides of the free end of said shorter arm and disposed in the tracks, a spring member mounted between the plates and bearing against the shorter arm biasing the hook member to a position wherein the longer arm limits the motion of the door or drawer, and said track enabling the first pair of guides to rise out of the track so that the spring member disengages the hook member and allows that arm to move to an inoperative position.
- 2. A cabinet latch comprising,
a pair of spaced apart supports and a hook member having an arm extending away from the supports when in the operative position and movable to an inoperative position, guide means carried by the hook member and the supports for guiding the travel of the hook member between the two positions, and a spring member yieldably urging the hook member into the operative position and enabling the hook member to be moved to a release position between the operative and disabled positions while a displacing force is applied to the hook member.
- 3. A latch for releasably locking a door, drawer or other closure comprising
a first member for mounting on the closure and having a catch for engaging a mating member, a spring engaging the first member for yieldably urging said member into a first position wherein the catch engages the mating member to prevent full opening of the closure, said spring yielding to pressure being applied to the first member so that said first member may be displaced to a second position to disengage the catch and mating member to enable the closure to be fully opened and when the pressure is relieved, said spring returning the first member to the first portion, said first member being movable so as to disengage the spring to enable the first member to move the catch to a disabled position and remain in that position so as not to engage the mating member.
- 4. A latch as defined in claim 3 wherein a mounting member supports the first member by means of tracks and bosses provided on those members.
- 5. A latch for releasably locking the door of an enclosure comprising
a support for mounting on the door and movably supporting a first latching member, a second latching member for mounting on the enclosure and mating with the first latching member when said first latching member is in a first position for limiting the extent to which the door may be opened, a spring engaging said first latching member and biasing said member to said first position, said first latching member being movable to a second position against the bias of the spring so long as a manual force is applied to the first latching member to enable the door to be fully opened, said first member being manually movable to a third position causing the spring to disengage the first latching member so as to disable said latching member.
- 6. A latch as described in claim 5 wherein
tracks and track followers are provided on the support and first latching member to guide movement of the first latching member to the first, second and third positions.
- 7. A latch as described in claim 6 wherein
said tracks are on the support and the followers are on the latching member.
- 8. A latch as described in claim 6 wherein said followers comprise first and second bosses on the first latching member,
said first latching member pivoting on the first bosses when it moves between the first and second position, and said bosses sliding in the tracks while the first bosses are out of the track when the first latching member moves from the second to the third position.
- 9. A latch as described in claim 5 wherein said first latching member is a hook and the mating member is a cleat.
- 10. A safety latch for preventing young children from opening a cabinet door or drawer comprising,
a base for attachment to the door or drawer, a first latching member mounted on said base for movement to an operative position allowing the door to be only partially opened, a displaced position allowing the door to be fully opened, and a disabled position, wherein the door may be freely opened and closed, a second latching member mounted on the cabinet and operatively position to engage the first latching member in the operative position and to avoid engagement with the first latching member when in the displaced position and when in the disabled position, and a track means in the base and first latching member enabling said member to move between the operative, displaced and disabled positions.
- 11. A safety latch as described in claim 10 wherein the track means includes a track in one of the base and first latching member and a follower in the other.
- 12. A safety latch as described in claim 11 wherein stops are provided in the tracks for engaging the followers.
- 13. A safety latch for drawers and cabinets to prevent access to their interior by young children comprising,
a base, a latching device slidably and pivotally movable in the base for engaging a catch on the cabinet to limit the opening of the drawer or cabinet door, a spring for biasing the latching device to a first position on the base wherein the device is positioned to engage the catch and limit opening of the drawer or cabinet door, said spring enabling the latching device by the application of manual force to pivot from the first position to a second position wherein it does not engage the catch so that the drawer or door may be fully opened and upon the removal of the manual force the spring returning the latching device to the first position, and a stop establishing a second position for the latching device in the base enabling said device to be manually pivoted from the second position to a disabled position wherein it does not interfere with the opening and closing of the drawer or door.
- 14. A safety latch as described in claim 13 wherein the latching device has a first pair of bosses engaging the base for establishing a pivot for the latching device when in the first position and a second pair of bosses engaging the base for establishing a second pivot for the latching device when it is in the second position.
- 15. A safety latch as described in claim 14 wherein the bosses cooperate with tracks formed in the base.
- 16. A safety latch as described in claim 15 wherein the second pair of bosses are out of the tracks when the latching device is in the second position.
- 17. A safety latch as described in claim 16 wherein the latching device is L-shaped having a short and a long leg, and the first pair of bosses are at junction of the two legs, and the second pair of bosses are at the free end of the shorter leg.
- 18. A cabinet latch comprising,
a latching member and a support for mounting the member on a cabinet, said member being movable from a first position for preventing access to the cabinet by a young child, to a second position that temporarily allows the cabinet to be fully opened, and a third position wherein the member is disabled so that the cabinet may be freely opened and closed.
- 19. A cabinet latch as described in claim 18 wherein biasing means is operatively associated with the member urging the member from the second position to the first position, and operatively disassociated with the member when the member is in the third position.
- 20. A cabinet latch as described in claim 18 wherein limited access to the cabinet is permitted when the member is in a first position for enabling the member to be displaced to the second position.
- 21. A cabinet latch as described in claim 20 wherein a spring is operatively associated with the member and is accessible when limited access to the cabinet is permitted for enabling the member to move to the second position.
