The invention relates to a cable lay braid having a plurality of intertwined twists, wherein each twist is laid from a plurality of intertwined strands.
The cable lay is a well-known and proven type of construction for twisted or laid rope, preferably in larger diameters. Here usually a plurality of yarns or twines form a braid by twisting and a plurality of strands, usually three or four, form a twist by twisting. A twist can have a core, for example in the case of 4-strand twists. A plurality of twists, usually three or four, finally form a twisted or laid cable lay rope by twisting.
Furthermore, twisted rope constructions, which are laid from a number of twisted strands, for example a square cordage consisting of 8 (4×2) strands, are well-known. Here each strand consists of a plurality of twisted yarns and/or twines, which are formed from a number of monofilaments in each case.
Braids are thus known in principle. The invention however recognized that the strands, usual for forming a braid made of yarns and/or twines, can be entirely produced from twists, which again in each case can consist of a number of strands, which again in each case are constructed from yarns and/or twines. Thus, a number of advantages are achieved.
The object of the invention can be seen in creating an improved braid construction of a rope and/or an improved cable lay braid, wherein greater tenacity can be achieved with comparatively little material being deployed, a more economic production method and improved change-over times at the intermediate product stage being possible as well as greater resistance to deformation of the twists formed from strands, particularly with larger rope diameters.
The above object is achieved with a cable lay braid according to claim 1. Advantageous refinements are illustrated in the sub-claims.
The invention also relates to a method for producing a cable lay braid in accordance with the invention.
The invention thus first relates to a cable lay braid with a plurality of intertwined twists, wherein each twist is laid from a plurality of intertwined strands and each strand is formed from a plurality of twisted yarns or twines. In contrast to prior-art rope constructions the twists are not laid and/or twisted, but twisted or laid as such and then intertwined as a whole in each case or expressed differently looped through each other. In contrast to prior-art twisted ropes in the case of the cable lay braid the usual strands formed in a single-step are replaced by twists formed in multi-steps, which on their part in each case are produced from twisted yarns or twines, which in turn are composed of monofilaments.
It may be proposed that each twist is laid from at least one core strand and a plurality of cover strands. For example, each twist can be laid from a core- and six cover strands or from three core- and nine cover strands. Also, larger pitches of the twists are conceivable, such as for example the structure consisting of 1 core strand and 6 strands in the intermediate position plus 12 strands in the cover position (1+6+12).
Each strand can consist of at least three—or as many as desired—yarns or twines.
It may be proposed that there are 4, 8, 12 twists or more.
The twists can be twisted to form a square plait or a 12-strand braid.
The yarns can have a first or a second lay direction (S- or Z-lay) and twines, if present, can have a first or a second lay direction (S- or Z-lay) in equal lay or in cross lay (round on round and/or round on counter-round).
The strands can have a first or a second lay direction (S- or Z-lay), wherein the yarns or twines can have the same or opposite lay direction.
The twists can have a first or a second lay direction (S- or Z-lay), wherein the strands can have the same or opposite lay direction.
The yarns or twines can contain monofilaments with circular, oval, polygon or many times rounded cross-section or consist of such.
It may be proposed that the monofilaments and/or the yarns or twines and/or the strands and/or the twists are coated.
The invention also relates to a rope having a cable lay braid in accordance with the invention, wherein the cable lay braid can be embodied as single braid, as core in a double braid, as core cover braid or as multi-core braid.
The inventive method for producing a cable lay braid according to the invention comprises the following steps: creating twists from a plurality of intertwined strands, wherein each strand is formed from a plurality of twisted yarns or twines and interweaving a plurality of twists to form the cable lay braid. For intertwining in contrast to twisting or laying the twists are looped through each other. Formation of the strands by twisting a plurality of yarns or twines can be part of the method, as also the formation of yarns or twines in each case from a number of monofilaments, for example by twisting.
It may be proposed that the monofilaments, yarns or twines, strands or twists are or become enhanced, such as by fixing, stretching, pigmenting or coating. For example, the yarns or twines or also the strands can be enhanced prior to twisting or the twists can be enhanced prior to intertwining.
Likewise, it may be proposed that the entire cable lay braid is enhanced by fixing, stretching, pigmenting or coating for example.

Each strand 4 is again formed from a number of twisted yarns 6, in the present example 12 yarns 6.
An advantageous variant of a cable lay braid is formed from 12 twists.
Alternatively, to the afore-described structure a twist can be formed from 12 strands, particularly in a wire rope-type construction, wherein three inner strands and nine outer strands are twisted to form a twist.
The crucial difference of the invention to prior-art braids consists of the fact that not strands, but twists are or become intertwined or expressed differently the intertwined strands are constructed as twists. Such a twist is laid from strands and consists of a plurality of strands, e.g. 7 or 12, as described.
