Claims
- 1. An apparatus for following along and around the length of an existing cable, said apparatus comprising: an open ended tubular main body adapated to be positioned concentrically around the cable; means for interconnecting said main body to said cable such that said body is slidably movable along the length of said cable from one end of the latter to its other end, said interconnecting means including a plurality of gripping members fixedly connected with said main body and slidably engagable against said cable for maintaining said main body in its concentric position around said cable as it moves along the latter; and means for slidably moving said main body along said cable; said tubular main body including inner and outer concentric, cylindrical sections axially slidable to a limited extent to and against one another; said gripping members being designed to engage said cable such that said main body is movable in a forward direction; and said moving means acting on said inner and outer body sections to cause the latter to alternately slide relative to one another in incremental steps along said cable.
- 2. An apparatus for following along and around the length of an existing cable for replacing the latter, said apparatus comprising: a main body having opposite front and back ends and including inner and outer concentric, cylindrical drive tubes axially slidable to a limited extent to and against one another, said slidable tubes being adapted for positioning around said existing underground cable; means for interconnecting said main body to said cable such that said body is slidably movable along the length of said cable from one end of the latter to its other end, said interconnecting means including a plurality of first gripping members fixedly connected with said inner drive tube and slidably engagable in the forward direction while preventing said inner drive tube from moving rearwardly relative to said cable and second gripping members fixedly connected to said outer drive tube and slidably engagable against said cable in a forward direction while preventing said outer drive tube from moving rearwardly relative to said cable; and means for slidably moving said main body along said cable in a forward direction, said moving means including first means for applying hydraulic force to said main body to slidably move said inner drive tube incremental steps in the forward direction relative to said cable and outer drive tube and second means for applying hydraulic force to said main body to slidably move said outer drive tube relative to said cable and said inner drive tube, said first and second means applying their respective hydraulic forces alternatively starting with the application of hydraulic force by said first means, whereby to move said main body incremental steps in the forward direction along said cable.
